If you thought that Apple's foray into the world of home entertainment died with the last iteration of the Apple TV, you're quite wrong.. (http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/the-next-apple-tv-revealed-cloud-storage-and-iphone-os-on-tap/#comments)

Exciting news if this is true. I for one thought it was going to be discontinued this summer. My PS3 handles my media streaming very well right now with PS3 media server but this new iteration of the Apple TV is interesting.

Interesting stuff. I generally just use my Apple TV as an airtunes speaker these days

for a hundred bucks, it'll be worth a shot

if I can point it at my multi TB fileserver, I'll be happy

if 100% of the content has to be streamed from apple, it'll suck

The device is said to be quite small with a scarce amount of ports (only the power socket and video out)

No digital audio out?

I hope Apple also has something for current ATV owners. I bought into this hoping Apple had bigger plans for this. I'd hate to feel burned.

I also hope it has an Ethernet option. Wireless congestion is a big issue when streaming.

It's likely an hdmi port... If they add a USB port it would be very interesting indeed as you could attach a massive external hdd. I'm surprised apple would sell anything for $99 but hey I'm not complaining. :)

To me ... this product sounds more limited than the current ATV. Especially a hacked current ATV. While Apple could do a lot more with the ATV, this approach seems to deliver less than the current iteration is capable of.

Even for the size and for the price, I still don't get the compelling reason to get one. It's still going to be stuck in the iTunes world. I doubt it will be a media center for all videos on my home network. It doesn't seem to offer anything new.

Personally, I'd like the ability to rent an HD movie and stream it to my TV. If this can do it for $99 I'm getting one. I know the current ATV does it but at more than 2x the price and no 1080p. Let's wait and see if this materializes and what the final specs are.

Except movies are often available for rental a full month after their DVD/Bluray release. And not available to rent for long either. The movie rental store is very inconsistent and unreliable in terms of what can be rented and when.

I'll take your word for it as I don't currently own one... If I want a new release that bad I'll get the Blu-ray anyway. I'm more interested in older movies, there seems to plenty available for rent.

No product is perfect obviously and no one has the same needs. What works for me may not work for you. I'll still get one at $99 if it ever gets released... ;)

I love my AppleTV. However, if I had to pay for it... it's not worth the money anymore. It used to have more consistent HD rentals. Now it's hit and miss.

(I only use my AppleTV as a glorified rental box)

We wanted to watch "Legion" tonight and it was available as a rental a week or two ago. Well, found out that you can't rent it on iTunes anymore. You can only buy it. I've had it trying to rely on iTunes movie rentals.

So if the next generation ATV goes to 1080p what will that mean for older models? Will iTunes still offer content in 720p?

Maybe they'll have a separate file that will auto-detect which ATV gen you have and it will download the appropriate file.

This ATV owner uses his as an Airtunes speaker with the odd theatrical trailer. Unfortunately ATV has been a bit of a bust so here's hoping they can make a more interesting product.
