: Can't stop BlockBuster Canada Spam!

Every month I receive spam from Blockbuster.

Unfortunately sometime ago, I gave Blockbuster my email address when I bought one of those $20 coupon books.

Since then I keep getting BlockBuster spam. I have "unsubscribed" about five times and still I keep getting spam.

Finally called them today to find out why they won't honour my unsubscribe request. They are going to call their email provider - ThinData - to find out why and get back to me.

Will keep you posted.

P.S. I understand that 97% of email is spam etc but when I give my email to a Canadian corporation, I expect them to respect me as a customer and not spam me and definitely don't ignore my unsubscribe requests.

Sorry to hear that, Hugh. Based on my experience dealing with Blockbuster Canada (in my lack of Blu-ray thread), I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a response.

Actually they phoned me back and I have been removed from everything.

Apparently when I bought the $20 Coupon book they put my email back on their list.

Needless to say, I won't be buying the $20 Coupon book again!

Wow, good to hear. Evidently phoning is the way to go. I'll try that next.

Or you could give them a fake email address. I had a similar problem with Dell some time back. I just created a rule to delete their emails on receipt. Problem solved.

I have seldom had a reputable Cdn company not honour an unsubscribe request in the last five years so generally I don't mind giving out my email address to a select group of companies.

I honestly did not expect Blockbuster to ignore my unsubscribe requests multiple times.

The tactic I use is to give everyone I subscribe to a unique email address or alias. I recommend that everyone register their own domain - this is one of the advantages of having your own domain.

You can register a .com domain for just $7/year. The domain host will usually let you setup several hundred email addresses for that but the approach I recommend is to then take that domain to Google Apps.

Create a Google Apps account and you can have 50 user mailboxes, shared calendars, distribution lists and things like that on your custom domain for free.

But maybe you don't want multiple mailboxes and calendars which is fine. You can still use Google Apps or your domain host to create literally hundreds of email aliases that forward into your primary email address.

So when I sign up for something like Blockbuster, I give them the email address of "blockbuster@mydomain.com". That alias forwards the emails into my personal email account. If I ever get spam or unwanted email from them then I just go in and delete blockbuster@mydomain.com and voila - no more emails from them.

That is why I have one email address that I use for things that I want to be emailed by (like this site for example) and one I use when I sign up for something figuring that it will result in me getting spam. North of Calgary's idea is good, but mine is a bit less complicated.

Here's a genius idea: hit the unsubscribe link. It works, unless you have subscribed to separate e-mails (Buzz and Mewards are separate).

Or block the sending e-mail address. Or just delete it. It's just an e-mail, not the end of the world.

Gee some moron can't read. If you'll see in post #1, did that five times.

BTW moviegirl88, I checked your posting IP address

OrgName: Blockbuster Entertainment Group
OrgID: BEG-3
Address: 3000 Redbud
City: McKinney
StateProv: TX
PostalCode: 75069
Country: US

I guess this is Blockbuster's way of dealing with unsatisfied customers. If you are going to go on the web and abuse your customers, I recommend using a proxy server

And who's the genius ;)

I recommend using a proxy server

Or at the very least, from somewhere other than your place of work. TOO FUNNY!

You should send Blockbuster a link to her post & your reply. Let's see how funny they think it is.:D

Heh heh, too funny.

Don't worry about Blockbuster...they'll soon be owned by somebody else or just outright bankrupt. Then moviegirl88 can change her name to McFriesGirl.

Two vendors that annoy me for not honouring their own email policies are Samsung Canada (pro products) and audible.com. I'll never buy an audible book from those clowns again.

Its unfortunate but companies just spam with impunity with the "oh you can unsubscribe" but as In noted many companies, such as Blockbuster, don't honour it.

IN addition, I don't want to click the unsubcribe link because the link is to some unknown server which could actually be a phishing site.

Dear Blockbuster, your company is obviously not up to the task of conducting your mass emailings in a consumer-friendly way. Read and learn how to pay an experienced company to do your client emailings properly for you:

Me too. Also it validates your email address for their database. I think about it long and hard before I hit that 'unsubscribe' link.
