hi everyone, i just got here cause I need to get some answers about filming/video recording in the public?

is there any laws, do's and donts?

cause we been filming with me dancing with various people around Toronto. we didnt get anyone to sign an consent form, but I don't think it would be an issue unless someone decided to sue us. is it okay? cause we are filming it on the street, and just putting it on youtube. we are not looking to make money, and so I wouldn't consider that commercial use.

also, we filmed in private properties law various malls in Toronto, do they have the right to sue us??

you ususaly need a permit in certian areas of the city.

each place has there own laws.

On the public street you are ususaly fine but on private proporty you need permission from the owner or they can make you take down / not post any video you made there.

First IANAL but from what I understand filming in public places out in the open likely won't get you in trouble but filming in shopping malls, on the bus or subway, or in other "privately" owned venues could get you in trouble.

Also certain places where people have the expectation of privacy (a public washroom) will certainly get you into trouble.

that does seem to be case. but the whole thing around rights to film is so iffy and there are no specific laws around it. or at least that I can find it

right now, like I am not too concern because I see this one show called "the conventioneers" and they goto a lot of trade shows and make fun of people.

they content is a lot more objectionable and I haven't seen any of their work being taken down.

thank god canada is not like the US where people are lawsuit trigger happy

Anything that's out in public is public domain as long as it's legal (ie....as someone pointed out, bathrooms, I imagine children on beaches etc etc.). It gets iffy if you're making money from it (ie you're filming for profit.)
