Anyone notice that CBLT-DT's strength has increased today? Seems like they may have gone to their post-transition ERP.

Based on the CBC television coverage map, the Penetanguishene radio site might be a good location for a future TV transmitter, but they are unlikely to invest in one.

If they are so afraid of investments, why not let Corus Entertainment run more Ontario transmitters as affiliates? Right now they own CHEX Peterborough and CKWS Kingston + a few repeaters.

CBC wants to rid itself of affiliates. See the old thread about CKX-TV (CBC - Brandon). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if CBC tries to kill the Cours affiliates once their agreements expire...

I don't think CBC wants to get rid of/buy out ALL affiliates, necessarily; just the ones that come to be owned by a major competitor like CTV, which is what happened to CKX.

CBLT signal strength jumped from 77% to 88%, now matching TVO for me.

I noticed the same thing, with CBLT coming in strong the last couple days. In the past, CBLT has always been tropo only due to obstructions to the east. If this reception quality remains through the winter, I'll be very pleased.

It appears to me as well that they bumped up the signal, at least on one antenna. I suspect we could see some stations transitioning over the weekend instead of waiting until the 31st.

It's not that clear. The CBC has lost many affiliates ofver the past decade (Medicine Hat, Kamloops, Okanagan) and had no intentions of providing an OTA signal.
Dogall Media in Thunder Bay also almost lost their CBC affiliation, and went so far as to get CKPR's license amended so that it did not NEED to remain a CBC affiliate.

I suspect these affiliations are all about money, and whether a provate affiliate can make a living under the conditions the CBC imposes.

Corus in Kingston (and to a lesser extent in Peterborough) occupies the privileged position of being able to block incursions from regional broadcasters CTS, Rogers (OMNI and CITY) and CHCH. This is not the case in London.

From the CBC website.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The installation of CBC and Radio-Canada’s new DTV transmitters in Winnipeg has been delayed by one month, until September 30, 2011. The extension is required to accommodate an unforeseen delay that is outside of the Corporation’s control. During construction it became apparent that the tower on the rooftop of the Richardson building in Winnipeg was unable to safely accommodate the new DTV antennas. The tower must be reinforced with steel before the antennas can be installed. The necessary materials to reinforce the tower will not available until later in September. Both stations plan to continue to broadcasting an analogue signal until the new DTV transmitters are ready, subject to CRTC approval. That means that for the next month or so, there will be no change to the over-the-air service offered by CBC and by Radio-Canada in Winnipeg:

CBC will continue to broadcast on analogue channel 6 until it switches to digital channel 27 in September.
Radio-Canada will continue to broadcast on analogue channel 3 until it switches to digital channel 51 in September.

Updated coverage maps now available on the CBC website. I was right about Midland losing coverage. Stratford and Tillsonburg also lose out.

If CBLT-TV-2 were to boost its signal, Midland would have coverage. Hopefully something the CBC looks at for the future. Same goes for Orillia, as it could be serviced by CBLT-TV-2, CBLT-DT or CHEX-TV if there is a future signal boost.

It has been noted in the Manitoba/Saskatchewan reception thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=33078) that CBC/Radio-Canada are delaying the implementation of CBWT-DT and CBWFT-DT until Sept. 30, 2011, owing to weakness in the transmission tower on the Richardson Building in downtown Winnipeg.
Source is the newly updated CBC DTV information pages.

Updated on the CBC site. 4 transmitters shut down (2 in Barrie, 2 LPs in 52-69 they didn't bother to save).

I notice that the Chatham transmitter which was supposed to relocate to ch42 from 64, has been switched and is up and running on ch55 in the (no longer a channel zone)

Not sure if this has anything directly to do with CTV 42 not moving or just because the gov't has no buyer for the freq. but they do for 64? (feeling very slightly confused)

I've noticed a lot of signal issues with analogue 9 tonight. The signal strength cuts in and out rapidly at times. I've noticed it cut completely out several times, like right now. The sound levels jump up and down....they must be doing something over there in preparation....also, the picture quality is awful....

Thanks El Gran Chico for posting the updated CBC transmitters link @ http://cbc.radio-canada.ca/dtv/transmitters.shtml

Since the CRTC approved London CBLN-TV and other communities CBC analogue transmitters service to continue until August 31, 2012, we will all have to wait until next June 2012 to find out what the CBC will do with these transmitters. Will the CBC eventually convert some or all of the 22 transmitters in mandatory markets to digital, or simply shut down these transmitters by August 31, 2012 ?

How can we the public continue to petition the CBC / CRTC / gov't to mandate the CBC to convert transmitters to digital broadcasting ?

Will the recent involvement of local London & area municipal gov't leaders, MPPs, and MPs still be relevant a year from now to convert London's CBLN-TV, which is a rebroadcaster of Toronto's CBLT, to digital ?

GlobalTV and CTV are converting all their required transmitters to digital by the Wednesday night deadline, but the CBC is not. Unless it receives a further exemption from the CRTC, cities like Saint John, Quebec City, Saskatoon and London, Ont., will lose their free, over-the-air English CBC broadcasts next August, while places such as Calgary and Windsor, Ont., won't get transmissions of French-language Radio-Canada.http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/story/2011/08/30/list-digital-tv-transition.html?ref=rss

^^
So, just as many people thought... CBC just delayed shutting down the transmitters in the 22 mandatory markets for a year.
This is just a tactic to suppress the 'noise'. I'd like to shutdown my tax dollars from going to the CBC on August 31, 2012 as well.
