: 5.1 Surround on HD over HDMI

Currently I have my Mediaroom 430 connected to my TV via component cables. The sound is set as 5.1 and I am currently using the audio out on the TV to run to the receiver cause it just has a single input. The other day I tried replacing the component cable with HDMI. I found that when watching SD channels everything was OK, but when watching HD channels I did not get audio. In order to get audio on the HD channels I had to change the 430 to output stereo. So I have a couple of questions about this.

1. Why would the setting of 5.1 work for SD channels, but not HD?
2. Could my issue be related to my TV not being able to pass the 5.1 signal back through to my receiver? I do not have this problem with my Bluray or Media Centre extender.

Thanks. Simon

That's kind of an odd one; I have the following setup:

Panasonic Blu-ray --> Yamaha receiver
Mediaroom 430 --> Yamaha receiver
Yamaha receiver --> TV

The audio always comes out of the receiver, and I get 5.1 on HD perfectly.

Maybe try funneling everything through your receiver if you can? (I know your inputs are limited.)

I am currently using the audio out on the TV to run to the receiver cause it just has a single input. I assume this means you're going "through" the TV. This is not possible on most HDTVs. See the following FAQ on the topic. Read the bolded part. You may need to purchase an external switch, or a new AVR with enough inputs and go directly to the AVR to get DD5.1.

Ok, these answers are confirming what I suspected. A proper receiver is on my list of buys over then next few months.

Thanks.
