: HRTC Question

I'm doing my own taxes and have hit a bit of a snag... I've claimed a good $4000 worth of receipts on the HRTC already for basement and yard work on our new house. My problem is we put in our fence along with 3 neighbors, (all of us in a row), and materials were kind of a group buy type thing. We split the costs between us after totaling everything up.

I have a $3000 receipt for all the wood together but thats it. (and it has no address or name on it either). Can I claim my portion of that receipt I have? My share comes out to about $750, not nearly the actual cost of the fence but something is better than nothing! It would be nice to get an extra $100 or so back. :D

Any help is appreciated!
(Also if I claimed it and happen to get audited and they don't approve it will I just have to pay back the $100 or are there extra penalties?)

Is it a photocopy of a receipt? AFIK they want to see original receipts only.

I was in a similar situation but made the vendor make up 2 different receipts, each with half of the total cost of the fence materials.

I think you'd have to get the vendor to provide an original receipt, divided up by your portion...otherwise it will look fishy. i.e. 1 receipt for your third, etc etc. If you're doing it retroactive, might be more trouble than it's worth for $100.

It's an original receipt, I think the neighbor that bought the wood got them to make a couple copies. Reading further on the CRA website they specifically say they need a name and address on the receipt. Understandable limitation as the whole block could "claim" the receipt I have. Oh well, I guess I'll have to forgo that credit. At the time the last thing on our minds was taxes, four fences built by four clueless guys equals one big gong show. :o
