In the last quarter of 2009, the amount of time Americans spent using the Internet while watching TV reached three and a half hours a month, up 35% from the previous quarter. (http://www.digitalhome.ca/2010/03/simultaneous-use-of-internet-and-tv-up-35-in-u-s/)

So in essence, more people have the tv on while surfing the net. Can you say "grazing"?

It is up because the cost of adding wireless networking has dropped, while the number of commercials per hour on commercial has increased.

Well for big dish people you kind of need the net to find stuff but I highly doubt the increase is even .001 % large dish users :)

I do it al the time. When I watch sports, I like to get the latest stats on a player playing in the game or when I watch a movie I like to look up the bio of one of the stars on IMDB or Wikipedia. Or do something on the web that has nothing to do with the tv show I'm watching. I don't think that's what they had in mind when they came up with the term multi-tasking.

And devices like the iPad will lead to an increase in activity like this as a tablet is ideal for having on your lap while watching TV.
