: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2010 (Closed - use 2011)
300sflyer 2010-02-20, 12:58 PM For some reason, some of my US statons are not coming through suddenly. 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 4.1, 7.1, 7.2, 29.1, 29.2, and a few others are no longer coming in. All of my other channels are still showing a good strong signal, so I don't believe there is anything wrong with my gear.
Any one else having any similars issues?
PrinceLH 2010-02-20, 01:31 PM Yeah, my signal strength is a little lite today too. Must be some refraction going on.
300sflyer 2010-02-20, 02:06 PM It stated acting up the other day. Really weird... I had such good signal strength [mid to high 90's] on most of my US stations previously.
300sflyer 2010-02-21, 12:14 PM Found my problem... I did not realize that every time you scan for channels, it wipes out the previous scan results. I had rotated my antenna before the scan, and it did not find all of the ones it had found previously...
This OTA takes a bit of getting use to, but I'm sure not missing the monthly Shaw Direct bill! ;)
PrinceLH 2010-03-02, 12:10 AM Hummm.... Is that tropo I see coming Mr. Hepburn? I think the groundhog was wrong!!

PrinceLH Hummm.... Is that tropo I see coming Mr. Hepburn? I think the groundhog was wrong!!
guess what I'm doing Saturday?
Bark64 2010-03-02, 10:19 AM Hummm.... Is that tropo I see coming Mr. Hepburn? I think the groundhog was wrong!!
Yes and Saturday is almost exactly the two month anniversary of the remarkable January 8 tropo event. Anyone up for a repeat! I just hope we didn't jinx it by bringing it up too soon. We'll have to see what Mr Hepburn has to say at 12:45 today.
PrinceLH 2010-03-02, 10:52 AM I'm game for a little early tropo event. Saturday is always a good day when tropo decides to come out and play.
PanaMark 2010-03-03, 09:46 AM I had some time this morning to DX my new VHF antenna.
I managed to pick up a few stations from Toronto and Hamilton
5 CBLT this one was the worst reception and limited picture
8 CKNX pretty good
9 CFTO fairly grainy but it had colour and was watchable
11 CHCH pretty good
here are some UHF's I got while pointed at Toronto/Hamilton way
25 CBLFT
36 CITS
41 CIII
47 CJMT or CFMT not sure which one it was
57 CITY
at the same time my Erie, Pa. stations were booming so I concentrated on pulling in channel 12 WICU and managed to get a maximum signal strength of 20%. While I was gone taking the kids to the bus, I left the television upstairs on channel 12 and while I was out the PSIP loaded so now I have that.
Good News:
I recently had Tin Lee build me a channel 10 and extra FM trap so now I am able to point towards the Cleveland transmitters. The trap has helped control the televisions AGC circuit. I am pleased to announce I have my Cleveland's back. Mind you this morning I was only able to pull WEWS, but I hope when more tropo comes in the others will follow.

When you get a chance please give us as much info as possible about it in here: Splitters, Attenuators, Filters, Diplexers, Other Signal Gear (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=42428) as there are lots of other members who could use a similar filter. :)
bigcam406 2010-03-03, 11:00 PM i dont know if anyone else noticed tonite how strong the signals were from the western new york area.stations i havnt received since the fall were coming in with a strength of 70+.(wgr,wivb,wkbw,ion).:D
PanaMark 2010-03-04, 08:23 AM well I finally managed to pull in Erie Pa's channel RF12 12-1 WICU with my new Delhi VHF antenna.

goforit 2010-03-04, 04:57 PM Congrats Mark!!
And if I recall- your VHF antenna is not huge?
Are you using an external tuner box? It's interesting to see all those lines of display data- my TV only shows signal strength.
What was the signal strength for Erie 12? You should be get the two sub channles too.
How's the picture quality?
Is 12.x 24/7? What about other Erie channels?
I guess the trap made a big difference?
Might even get better when you put the trap outside, right underneath the antenna?
Great job!
Cheers!!
Jase88 2010-03-04, 07:47 PM Congrats Mark; good grab.
I might experiment with a notch filter for channel 13 soon...in an attempt to grab WICU. There's just too much interference with CKCO 13 for me to receive channel 12 without one.
goforit 2010-03-04, 08:11 PM Jase88, you might want to try a few UVSJ splitters to knock down VHF 13. I tried 3 and it was comparable to my channel specific channel 11 trap.
PrinceLH 2010-03-04, 10:56 PM Glad to see the signals booming in across the Lakes. I've also seen some good numbers, here in the eastern half of Lake Ontario. Almost all of my Syracuse stations, save RF43, coming in strong. All Rochester locals in strong. I have 4 of the Buffalo's also in. Watertown's 3 high power stations are 20 % stronger but have not seen the LP RF35 as of yet. Still scanning for Utica, but no luck on those either. Great to see the Erie stations making their way into your sets, down at the west end. I'll scan for those here too. Come on Saturday!
New2OTA 2010-03-04, 11:08 PM I'm happy to report that ION is coming in strong here in Newmarket on my CM4228HD hacked without a preamp yet.
Odd but RF49 is gone and its usually pretty good:confused:
Co-channel interference?
PanaMark 2010-03-05, 07:19 AM Congrats Mark!!And if I recall- your VHF antenna is not huge?
Correct, my antenna is a one of the smallest footprint VHF antenna's from the Delhi VIP series. Are you using an external tuner box? It's interesting to see all those lines of display data- my TV only shows signal strength. No I am not using an external tuner box. On my (Dxing television which is a Panasonic) there is an extra disgnostic screen. I press up on the volume on the television and on the remote at the same time to engage this screenWhat was the signal strength for Erie 12? You should be get the two sub channels too.signal strength is low compared to the other Erie's cusping at the television's threshold of SNR to display. Indeed there is two sub channels 12-2 WBEP SD, and 12-3 WSEE SDHow's the picture quality?12-1 1080i, 12-2 and 12-3 480iIs 12.x 24/7? What about other Erie channels?channel 12 is an early morning visitor for the last two days till the sun comes fully up (about 1 hr of smooth reception), channel 24, and 66 are in and out during the day (usually decent at at night through the morning) and 35-1 WSEE never visits except during extreme tropoI guess the trap made a big difference?I believe it has had a positive resultMight even get better when you put the trap outside, right underneath the antenna?dunno, I hope so.
note: channel 12-1,12-2, and 12-3 are coming in this morning too

little-infinity 2010-03-06, 01:00 AM I don't know if this counts as tropo, but it's certainly unusual given my circumstances.

Yup, right in front of my very eyes was A Barrie's Newscast.
CKVR RF3 (that's right VHF-LO) from Barrie. Been like this all week. It's actually watchable.
But what makes this really odd is this:
-No tropo scheduled for the past week.
-Tropo usually from the south, NOT north.
-This is from a UHF 4221 CLONE pointed almost OPPOSITE to Barrie...
-TVFool shows +8db for RF3 at my location. I'm on the extreme southwest end of Mississauga by the lake. Not the ideal place to recieve a VHF-LO station 60 miles away. ESPECIALLY given the aforementioned 3 points.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Jase88 2010-03-06, 01:34 AM I wouldn't be surprised if CKVR ("A") Barrie has a contour that puts it's signal well into Toronto and area.
Either way, +8dB is good. VHF low signals carry much further than UHF. And your location by the lake may not be as disadvantageous as you suspect.
Get yourself a VHF antenna, and you should receive CKVR quite well.
