: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2010 (Closed - use 2011)
Phil81 2010-11-11, 08:39 PM This is really quite a remarkable night. Almost every channel from 2-69 is full of analog stations from the NE right now. Even more than on Tue night. Too many to list..
CTV 2 from Wiarton?
CKVR 3 from Barrie
Global 4 from Owen Sound
CIII 6 Paris (CLEAR)
CKNX 8 Wingham
CHCH 67 from Muskoka!
CKWS 66 Brighton, ON (Kingston)
digitals:
CBLT-DT 5-1 came in for a while. Heh I have never seen Jeopardy look so damn good. WDIV/WEWS are terrible in comparison.
CIII 41-1 even partially decoded.
+some Buffalo digitals
BONUS: Picked up two new never before seen stations within the last 20 mins here.
CKXT-DT 66-1 SunTV on 66.
CFMT 64-1 OMNI 1 on 64. Reeeeealy hard to overcome CBC analog 64 from nearby Chatham.
Jase88 2010-11-11, 10:11 PM A first for me! CBOFT-DT; RF 22; CBC FR; Ottawa. My first Ottawa digital all the way here in Kitchener. Very strong as well!
Odd weather tonight: 5c and foggy.
PanaMark 2010-11-12, 12:03 AM Thanks for the heads up guys.
Just got home from work and I have DXed some channels from:
Watertown, NY
Utica, NY
Rochester, NY
Buffalo, NY
Toronto, ON
Hamilton,ON
Erie, PA
Pittsburgh, PA
Youngstown OH
Cleveland, OH
Bowling Green, OH
Detroit, MI
Boy sure glad I have the rotor.
x4mer 2010-11-12, 12:16 AM I've posted here before, on tropo nights, about something analogue fighting to come in on CH63.
Tonight is the first time it's ever come in clearly. It's WVIZ analogue PBS from Cleveland.
Looking at the FCC website, WVIZ-DT is listed as CH 26, but there is no WVIZ analogue in the database.
I thought all the US stations had to be vacated from 52-69 by now.
Phil81 2010-11-12, 01:21 AM Looking at the FCC website, WVIZ-DT is listed as CH 26, but there is no WVIZ analogue in the database.Wow that is incredible that low power thing made it all the way there.
From wikipedia:
"WVIZ also operates two translators in northeastern Ohio—W63CT in Thompson, and W64AK in Ashtabula (Sheffield Township)."

It's 1am and again CIII,OMNI 1, CKXT digitals have come in yet again from CN tower and First Canadian Place. Got better pictures this time.
goforit 2010-11-12, 08:45 AM Last night I was pulling in new French channels, I think it was 30.0 and 34.0. It wasn't a repeater of CBLFT b/c the content was different. Not sure if it was Montreal- which would be impressive.
Hah, it's Ottawa- CIVO and CVGS- still impressive.
goforit 2010-11-12, 10:23 AM Still lots of tropo this morn. ION booming, and Ottawa 30.0 coming in too. Sun 15.1 absent, 45 ok.
wilspin 2010-11-12, 11:37 AM Still going strong. I got abc 5-1 (15) from Clevland here at the lake last night.
wilspin 2010-11-12, 11:55 AM more Cleveland today WKYC 3-1,2 WUAB 43-1,2
wilspin 2010-11-12, 08:47 PM It's Cleveland in the Kawarthas today as all their channels are still coming in strong. For the first time ever all Toronto DTV,s are good too. Only get CBC normally.
Schmerpy 2010-11-12, 09:12 PM Getting ION for the first time here with my attic installation at Yonge/Finch, and it's coming in strong too. Also seeing Rochester stations 21-1,2,3 and 26-1-2 !!
Can someone point to a scientific explanation of this tropo effect?
stampeder 2010-11-12, 10:49 PM Yep, you'll find lots of great into about Tropo, DXing, Ducting, and other effects on TV reception in the first several pages of posts in this earlier thread:
OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=26789)
As well as Post #23 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=991009&postcount=23) in the OTA FAQ.
Jase88 2010-11-12, 11:14 PM Just watched Fox 8 news from Cleveland... (RF 8)
Odd conditions lately...seems like tropo is coming from every direction.
Phil81 2010-11-12, 11:37 PM Strange. Analog 57 came in from the WSW around 11pm. How many out of core lp's are still active in America?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WBND-LP
..no trace of the digital 49.
majortom 2010-11-13, 08:00 AM Couple decent Pulls this AM, * are new to me

PanaMark 2010-11-13, 09:41 AM wow Milwaukee, Wi. Very nice, very nice indeed.
I have been watching the Cleveland's, myself.
hoopitup2000 2010-11-13, 10:25 AM Tropo very strong here in DC as well this morning. 3 LP's only 4 miles away overpowred by stations close to 100 miles away. New catch from New Bern, NC (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Arlington&1s=VA&1z=22207&1y=US&1l=38.9042&1g=-77.1264&1v=ZIP&2c=New+Bern&2s=NC&2y=US&2l=35.108299&2g=-77.044403&2v=CITY) (WEPX RF51-only 143 kw's)
PrinceLH 2010-11-13, 11:10 AM New one to add for me WJET RF24.1, from Erie, PA. I've had WQLN, RF50.1 a number of times, but I usually get wipped out on 24.1 from Syracuse, when the tropo is running strong. Continue to scan.......
PrinceLH 2010-11-13, 11:34 AM Also seeing Elmira on 18.1 and 36.1, this morning. Logged the LP station on 42.1, out of Rochester and good signals from 29.1 and 30.1 out of Utica, as well. Still can't seem to nab WNGS, out of Buffalo, here in Eastern Ontario. All other Buffalo locals are in the 70's to 90's range, this morning.
thenewdc 2010-11-13, 05:13 PM I was seeing WQLN Erie for the first time this AM. Also WNGS was booming in as well as several from Cleveland and Rochester too. I also got a hint of WFXP Erie briefly.
