: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2010 (Closed - use 2011)
galoot 2010-09-01, 06:26 PM Last night around 11 PM I hooked up our portable TV (a 13 inch Naxa HDTV/DVD) to the GH6 I have mounted on the side of the house and did a channel scan. Wonder of wonders, I finally acquired a tropo station! WROC channel 8 (CBS), and WUHF Channel 31 (FOX). Cool. Of course, now I'm curious as to what else I can get... time to build a second antenna I guess. Love to be able to pick up a PBS Create station.
ota_canuck 2010-09-01, 07:01 PM In southern Ontario, tonight the temps are dropping from 30°C to 20°C and the humidity will remain high or increase with a resulting humidex of 29°C through the night. The end result is a very high dewpoint where you will be able to literally wave your arm through the air and your skin will feel wet.
The point of this story is: Tropo-palooza in southern Ontario tonight.

Yup. Here in Burlington I'm getting WXXI and WROC out of Rochester.
Plus a weird 'radio' station apparently on the same frequency as WXXI at 485MHz.
It's showing up on my EyeTV software as virtual channel 22. (Or possibly 67! Weird.)
Has anyone else seen that?
While it's neat, I'm looking forward to less interference on CFTO!
little-infinity 2010-09-01, 11:23 PM I can't help but feel bad for some of you folks who have to deal with such crazy tropo. I guess for once, lower elevation is a blessing.
Asides from the usual Rochester UHF trio, and WSYR Syracuse, nothing new. I also get occasional blips on RF21 and RF29 (WWTI Watertown most likely and WKTV Utica).
I enjoy the fact that I don't have to worry about losing any TOR/BUF stations to this madness.
Unless you're that rare spot in the GTA that is high above the lake, we're pretty sheltered here!
ota_canuck, I recall you mentioned you lived in Mississauga at one time. Perhaps it's time to come back?! :P
arc23 2010-09-02, 03:37 PM last night sept 1, 2010 between 10-11 pm on my Terk indoor antenna peaked for CHCH-DT / CITS-DT near Bloor/Spadina I picked up.
CLEVELAND
5 WEWS [ABC] RF 15
3 WKYC [NBC] RF 17
ROCHESTER
8 WROC [CBS] RF 45
21 WXXI [PBS] RF 16
i got moving images from all of them
majortom 2010-09-02, 08:05 PM Couple new ones for me yesterday AM for an hour or two.
Nothin new after that though.
41 WXYZ-HD 7.1, 7.2 Detroit
44 WWJ-HD 62.1 Detroit
45 WDIV-HD 4.1, 4.2 Detroit
Was kinda funny cause I noticed it by leaving it on RF 45 WROC Rochester
the nite before. Woke up the next AM and Detroit was booming in.
Complete opposite direction (Reflectorless SBGH).
icniagara,
PBS from Toledo, OH, and Erie, PA been pretty solid here
for the last few days. Have you looked for them at all,
see if ya can see 'em in Niagara Falls by any chance?
icniagara 2010-09-02, 11:12 PM Channel RF 50/WQLN has been trying to catch, i still need to shorten some wires, or maybe run things through my PC tuner which has grabbed rf 45 a couple of times. RF 29 is even pausing on my tuner, so it seems like a longshot. Having PBS create is really quite nice, but I can only wonder what their daytime programming looks like...
majortom 2010-09-02, 11:19 PM Actually during the heat of the day, they both seem to boom in here.
Just I'm normally at work during the day. But I've noticed that all summer long
on hot days. I was home from work Wednesday.
Toledo was in all day that day, from Noon till around dinner time.
Then re-appeared in the evening hours. While Erie wasn't as stable, in and out the entire time.
Today was probably the last of the heat for a while based on the weather forecast though.
ralph_sinclair 2010-09-03, 09:03 AM I have a CM4228HD in my attic that I point west for VHF reception of my locals that aren't on satellite. I've done a few scans lately and picked up CIVK-TV and CIVK-TV-1 analog Radio-Quebec stations from the Gaspé (~160mi). I wonder if I'll be able to pick these up when they go digital next year? CIVK-1 is allowed up to 1MW. They are both 1MW+ stations now.
One mild night in March when the Hepburn forecast looked very good for Cape Cod I pointed the CM4228HD SSW off my balcony but got nothing.
alebowgm 2010-09-03, 09:09 AM I snagged WDWO-CA last night... which normally wouldn't be such a big thing considering I am in Windsor and its a Detroit 15kW station, but considering I ideally should be pointing Southwest and instead I am stuck using my CM 4228 indoors and pointing Northeast, I was pretty happy with the catch.
Of course I am getting anti-tropo on WDIV as it is off the map right now unless I repoint, but a repoint will make me drop WKBD.
hkaye 2010-09-06, 09:32 PM Good tropo tonight, all my Buffalo stations that I normally don't get are coming in strong and steady. Of note: I'm picking up CKVR VHF 3 here in Kitchener with a UHF antenna. It's quite strong with only a bit of snow that looks more like electrical interference. This is the second time I've picked it up and last time it was weak and B&W.
heh, either that or it's my new modifications to my DYI antenna. :D
ota_canuck 2010-09-06, 09:55 PM This is the second time I've picked it up and last time it was weak and B&W.
That must be some very old tropo! CKVR has been broadcasting in colour for many years now :p
Yes,.. it's tropo again. I have all the Cleveland tropo stuff coming in tonight. The coolness of the night air and the current rising humidity in southern Ontario tonight should provide some good ducting opportunities until morning. The dewpoint is rising through the night and tomorrow is sure to become a humid-heat wave, but just for one day. Weird weather!
Jase88 2010-09-07, 12:05 AM Same here for CKVR channel 3--nearly clear too. Although I'm using a VHF-HI antenna, and it's not pointed in CKVR's direction...
Also grabbing Rochester UHF's. Haven't tried for Cleveland tonight as yet.
Phil81 2010-09-07, 06:38 PM Some brief tropo mostly to the south early on Labor day here.

Two WOSU's mean there were two 34-1's. UpdateTV data shows up by RF channel, so WOSU-DT RF38 has 38-8 an 38-9 and the repeater on RF47 has 47-8 and 47-9.
WSYX was a new catch at 151.1 mi/243.17 km since moving last week to RF48 from RF13.

decew 2010-09-11, 08:04 AM Maybe its just dxing, but this mornig I'm picking up Rochester with a decent signal(no fade). Channels 8.1, 21.1,21.2,21.3, 31.1. Yet i still cant receive 51 from batavia. I'm liking the programing, different from buffalo gives extra variety.
Hope its a sweet spot i found and not just dxing, i wont screw around and try for the other roch channels for fear of losing these.
Phil81 2010-09-15, 11:45 PM An approaching warm front to the west and southwest is churning up some 80-150 mile tropo.

majortom 2010-09-15, 11:47 PM Atta boy Phil.
Despite the wind farms...
Yeah, I saw some Cleveland here in Buffalo this evening also.
Bark64 2010-09-18, 10:08 AM Late last night and early this morning a couple of new finds for me here in London. One out of West Virginia and one out of Virginia. The first to come in was WLFG rf 49 68-1 out of Lebanon, Virginia. That is 430 miles away which is the farthest channel I've seen since January. The second to come through was WVVA rf 46 6-1 NBC, 6-2 CW out of Bluefield, West Virginia. That is 395 miles from London. Strange because it was a very quite tropo day/night otherwise. At first I thought they were the Toledo stations trying to come through on rf 46 and 49. But it turned out to be much better than that. I know Panamark has seen West Virginia stations before but I think this might be the first sighting of Virginia in London. I had to leave for work at 6:30 am this morning so I don't know how long the channels were on for. I first saw rf 49 at around midnight and rf 46 at around 1:30 and both were still in and out at 6 this morning.
PanaMark 2010-09-18, 01:16 PM indeed if you look at the Hepburn maps for the times of those very nice pulls you will see that there was a window for reception from those markets according to his trends. Impressive to say the least.
I have been a sleep at the wheel lately regarding DXing, but you remind me why I like this hobby. Thanks for posting your results.
Garth J 2010-09-20, 03:17 AM Wowsa!!!
Just when I thought this September was an average month for tropo compared to last year, suddenly I picked up TWO new stations in Markham:
WTAE (RF51) Pittsburgh, PA (about 250 miles away from me)
WJAC (RF34) Johnstown-Altoona, PA (about 242 miles away)
It was a surprise and I might have missed them if I hadn't scanned around! In the afternoon today I was seeing some Rochester tropo (just the big 3 UHF stations WROC, WXXI, WUHF.) Then later at night I saw a blink on RF50 and re-aimed towards Erie, PA thinking that WQLN might come in. Then I saw a gigantic, erratic blink happening on RF51 and eventually it decoded as Pittsburgh's WTAE! I got a few sporadic minutes of decode. Then later on RF34 lit up and came through (again for only a few minutes) as Johnstown's WJAC!
The stations came in very briefly, but it's neat to add a couple of new ones to the list. Also enjoy seeing all the results coming in from Southwestern Ontario!
