RF21 is likely WXXI (PBS) from Rochester. This channel also carries virtual 16.7, which is an audio sub-channel for WRUR (Rochester University Radio), and the data-update channels.

My receive log also indicates WMYD-HD was captured on channel 21 (Detroit MYTV affiliate).

For channel 29, my log shows two entries: WKTV-DT (Utica, NY), and WGTE-HD (PBS) Toledo, OH. You're likely seeing Utica.

Recently I was doing some cycling around Toronto along the waterfront down to Mississauga. My GPS was showing an alititude of 80m above sea level right at the lake. Whereas my home in Kitchener is 350m above sea level. This would explain why DXing can be difficult for you, little_infinity.

Think you got it backwards Jase, WXXI would be 16RF with virtual 21.1/2/3 :P

16.7 on my Sharp shows an audio channel like you said. Think there's an UpdateLogic channel somewhere there too, not sure. I always get WXXI during tropo, and even just some warm summer nights. Easiest pick of them all by a longshot. I love their format, more than WNED. Better use of subchannels, and their commercials for programs are in HD, whereas WNED sometimes upconverts a tad blurry, and even stretches their little bug.

But thanks for the clarification of Utica! Pretty impressive, moreso than Syracuse! You're right, I doubt I'd see Toledo/Detroit, seeing as the enscarpment on the west/my low elevation pretty much blocks anything west of Buffalo. Aim is fixed at Buffalo, no rotor.

But again, it's kinda a blessing. Since my visitors are from mostly Rochester + WSYR (perhaps others in the future!), I don't have to worry too much about my local channels being eradicated on a nightly basis! Things here have generally been stable for me recently. New channels for DX would be kinda fun though!

Lots of things are coming in tonight WUHF-DT (28 UHF) from Rochester and W42CO-D (42 UHF) from Rochester. Never got these ones before.

As a side note, WXXI (PBS Rochester UHF 16) and WROC (CBS Rochester UHF 45) are also in. But these two I often get.

Amazing what a few clouds can do :)

I read my log wrong! WWTI (Watertown) is on channel 21. Thanks for correcting me, little_infinity. WXXI's virtual channel is 21--which led to my confusion. It's indeed on 16.

Just fyi WGTE on RF 29, indeed came in briefly here in Buffalo Fri Nite/Sat AM.
So, coulda been WGTE infinity was seeing...or even possibly why he couldn't
quite get over the cliff on the Utica RF 29 Station.

While tropo is good and I am still getting 7.1, 18.1, 50.1 & 57.1 nightly, and in advance of the arrival of channel 18 WNYF-LD, I have decided to mess up my "antenna farm". I think I'll move my single cut 21 antenna to my main mast with my CM4242 (with the Kitztech). On my second mast I was thinking of raising it another 10ft (up to 40ft) and putting up a HD8800 tomorrow with my unknown vhf antenna and a CM7777.

I was about to drill the holes for a single cut 18, but I think I will save the parts for a channel 14 antenna for next year. I am optimistic that a single or stacked hd-8800 will pull in WNYF-LD. According to the hdtvprimer comparison page it really is the best antenna between 14 and 38, I also see that mlord in the past has sworn by it. Seems to me, it would be the best DXing antenna for Ottawa as our interesting DX'able UHF stations are 18(28.1),21(50.1),23(18.1),38(57.1) and maybe 14(5.1) next year. Any comments/experiences from HD-8800 users out there???

Looks like your getting WSYR RF17 9-1 ABC from Syracuse NY.

----
Loosing many of the more local stations here tonight.
Gone are WJBK,WDIV,WWJ, and WTOL,WTVG and more due to the Grand Rapids market. WOTV RF20 is currently moderate at 149 miles away.

Got another very rare station from Lansing market. W27CN-D RF27 at 8.5kW. It repeats TCT from WAQP RF48 Saginaw which was also seen tonight. Even Central Michigan University's mother station WCMU 14-1 on RF26 is coming in. 173 miles for that one.

Also noticing when facing east some of Buffalo and Erie are in.

Nothing new or exciting.

WSYR-2 maps to 9.2 on my set as well. Likely because 9.1 is already mapped by CFTO Toronto (CTV).

The tropo has been on fire tonight! Really glad too, as the past week was kinda quiet. Got all Rochesters (except WUHF....didn't even see a blink on that one tonight.) Also saw VERY strong Utica, NY WKTV (RF29) peaking at 92% signal. Also pulled in the weaker WUTR (RF30). Compared to WKTV, WUTR is about half their tower's height and running 50kw compared to WKTV's 708kw. So it feels like more of a rarity!

Oddly, Syracuse's WSYR never came in (blinked, but never got strong enough to decode.) But I did get a few bursts of Watertown's WWTI (RF21) which seems very tricky to get in my neck of the woods. (Dunno if I just haven't found the "sweet spot" to aim at, or if it's just that it's such a low powered signal.)

Also got Erie's WQLN (RF50) and a few min of the WICU trilogy with subchannels WBEP and WSEE all on RF12-1,2,3. Erie's WFXP on RF22 came in enough for PSIP information but had trouble overriding Oshawa's analog CHEX. Also saw something blink on RF34 when aimed at Erie. It wasn't Cleveland's WQHS, because the signal got weaker when I aimed at Cleveland.

All in all some great DXing, and got to see lots of wonderfully cheesy local commercials, plus bits of the weekend newscasts from Rochester & Utica. (Rochester's WHAM on RF13 is supposed to go to full HD local news soon, but it was still SD tonight!)

I thought I remembered a post about an elusive megawatt Pittsburgh station on RF42 so I looked back. Post 450 from Bark64. Well, I'm happy to report seeing 22.1 WPMY-DT RF42 last night. Had a couple from, I believe, Harrisburg: 21.1 WHPDT and 21.2 WHPMY RF21. Wish I could have done some more DXing but we had company. Company suitably impressed at the quality of an OTA HD picture but not so impressed by the 'regulars' getting trounced by distant stations.

Happy DXing

nice catches everyone,
instead of DXing last night I have been enjoyed long lasting reception from the Cleveland market.
Now I woke up this morning to watch some tv and low and behold I received a new station.
It is WMFD 68-1, 68-2 RF12. It remapped my 12-1 WICU from Erie
It is not HD but rather SD and on the sub channel is weather and classified.
LOL I had a good laugh that they had guns for sale on the classified portion.

thanks ImHooked, just swung rotor towards Pittsburgh and voila 22-1 WPMY RF42. It was not long but nice none the less
other Pittsburgh channels coming in strong this morning
2-1 KDKA RF25
11-1,11-2 WPXI RF48
16-1 WQEX RF38
53-1 WPGH RF43

Getting good tropo again now. I am guessing it wont last long. Receiving 23 digital stations including

2.1 (real 29) WKTV-HD Utica NBC
2.2 (real 29) WKTVDT2 CW
43.1 (real 44) WNYS-DT Syracuse MyTV

Once again WHEC 10.1 (real 10) and Syracuse fox 19.1 is on the edge of locking.

I am in Ottawa east end. I installed a HD-8800 this morning facing Potsdam New York aiming at WNPI 23 (18.1). No problem with receiving 18. But on my first scan (at 11am yet) I also pulled in

10.1 (real 26) Albany ABC
10.2 Albany Weather Channel
10.3 Albany RTV 10

Albany is in the same compass direction to me as Potsdam. Looks to be about 200 miles. My longest pull ever. Pretty good catch for Ottawa, since we don't have a great lake to spoil us!! Looking forward to see what it pulls in tonight!

It also appears to be a perfect DX antenna because on the first scan I even received Albany! Great start. I am quite chuffed, now I am ready for WNYF-LD channel 18 (28.1). I am hoping that the 8800 will receive WNYF-LD regularly when it starts anyday! If so, it is a very good option for the Ottawa area.

backpackster, about your post in which you mentioned the Winegard HD-8800 being a good candidate for the range where WNYF-LD is, let me know what you get once WNYF-LD is up hopefully before end of Sept. Crossing my fingers on WNYF-LD reception...
