FOX 8 (RF 8) Cleveland booming in tonight so far...
2010-08-08, 12:18 PM
Right now its pouring rain at my location, yet the Rochester UHF 3 are booming in here, as well as everything from Buffalo including WNGS. It appears that rainfall doesn't necessarily affect UHF signals.

Mr. Hepburn (http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html) is of course our leading authority on liquid sunshine, OTA, and the troposphere, so from the great amount of technical info he provides it seems that local rainstorms that are down low in the troposphere will not necessarily get in the way of tropo. Certainly the weather fronts that tower way up high will, but maybe in this case (just a guess) the tropo skip from Rochester is happening above the local rain front. Again, just a guess. :)

Tonight's going to be another good tropo night on The East coast, I just picked up wyne 1& 2 from here in Yarmouth NS, with just the M4 and a ge distribution amp. The Hauppauge signal monitor is showing 17.2, while the Portland and Boston stations are showing 27-29. Hmmm, too bad I can't get a full lock on rf 7 & 10 when I point it towards Calais, just afc lock and vsb sync lit up in green.
Just did another scan, got wedh Hartford, wfsb, and wcau philadelphia.

East coast tropo... That's great to see! :)

Some good tropo tonight. WEWS is wiping out WBNF, also getting WQHS and WBNX, all Cleveland here in Stouffville.

@ thenewdc - It's funny you were getting Cleveland up in Stouffville....here in Markham, I didn't even see it blink!
Tonight I was picking up the "usual suspects" from Markham, including all the Rochester digitals (even the VHF ones were coming in *very* strong - even right now.) But one thing puzzles me. WROC (RF45) was coming in during the early part of the night (11pm-1:30) but sometime in the middle of the night it totally disappeared. Now there's no signal blink at all. I would normally think something was interfering, but I'm still getting strong signals on all the other channels (RF10 WHEC, RF13 WHAM, RF16 WXXI, RF28 WUHF and even low power RF42 W42CO-D!) Maybe there's some transmitter issues?
Also picked up Syracuse's WSYR (RF17) and Utica's WKTV (RF29) sporadically....plus some Erie with WICU (RF12) and WQLN (RF50). Heh I guess you could call this list my "full house" when it comes to tropo!
I haven't been on here enough through the Summer. I'll have to post a "catch up" list of what I've picked up the last several weeks. Congrats to all the amazing catches you guys have been having over the Summer season! :)

I should have mentioned that I was also getting all the Rochesters plus WSYR and WKTV, but they are the usual tropo channels I get. Funny thing is that I've never ever gotten a hint of anything from Erie at my location, which may just be because my antenna is not pointed in that direction. Whenever I see pure snow on ch-15 I know its WEWS overriding WBNF in Buffalo. Some call it digital snow on an analog channel. Its weird that I can get Cleveland on an antenna pointed at Batavia but not Erie. This area has such a plethora of nearby analog signals that it prevents us from getting more tropo channels like they do in southwestern Ontario. Sometimes I see snow on analog 19 TVO which I know is some distant digital channel trying to break through.

Syracuse and Rochester UHF's were booming in this afternoon.
Unfortunately I'm too close to local VHF's (too much adjacent channel interference) to get the Syracuse/Rochester VHF's...though channel 8 from Cleveland was coming in strong the other day.

I have one new visitor to report. It is channel 5-1 WTVH RF47 Syracuse NY. It was my first pull of this station. I was watching Big Brother last night on Buffalo's channel 4-1 WIVB and during a commercial break I did a quick scan and this channel came up. I watch about 5 mins on it till it left.
I was also able to pull from Toronto Global 41-1 RF65, OMNI 2 44-1, 64-1 OMNI RF44, and Hamiton's CITS 36-1 RF35
2010-08-13, 07:06 AM
As much as I get WSYR quite frequently, I would never be able to pick up WTVH because of a very strong analog CFMT on ch-47 here.

Nice one Mark! Last night must have been whacky. Buffalos were banging in off the side for sure. (I don't turn my antenna)
New visitor for me as well...
WROC-TV 8.1 RF45 Rochester. Off the side? Man.
I wasn't even scanning, it just popped in during a surf.

Have you considered a rotor.
London OTA is like a box of chocolates. You never know which market will show up. That way you can rotate towards the strongest one. I got tired of going up and down the roof.
I was sure the neighbours thought I was nuts.

Decided to unplug the VHF port of the UVSJ over the weekend.
Hung an old 4 Element VHF antenna (looks like a LPDA) about a foot below the SBGH.
---------To Pre-Amp in
Moved the rotor toward Rochester this evening.
Scanned 39 Dig Channels, across 21 discrete freqs, and 5 Markets.
Buffalo, NY Toronto, ON Rochester, NY Erie, PA, and Watertown, NY.
Have never seen Watertown visit here before.
Broke my previous record of 32, but that was while only on the SBGH UHF Antenna.
Watertown lasted about 1-2 hrs, between 8 and 945 pm.
WNGS(Buf VHF7). WHEC (Roc VHF10), WHAM (Roc VHF13) were "new to me"
because of the VHF Antenna. Also "new" W42CO-DT on RF 42, another TCT
Summarised - All of Buffalo, all of Rochester, CBLT from TO, WJET and WQLN from Erie, PA.
WWTI and WPBS from Watertown on RF 21 and RF 41 also "New to me".

Thank goodness for Tropo. I've spent more time this summer watching HD out of Cleveland and Erie than I have watched any of the locals. The 2 omnis aren't the best stations but atleast if they were HD it would help me through a long tropoless winter. City tv on the other hand I watch a fair bit so that would be a nice addition.

WADL-DT; RF 38; Detroit; made an appearance last night. As did many other "regular" greater Detroit down to Cleveland stations.
2010-08-20, 03:07 PM
indeed Jase, WADL was in last night. I like when it comes in as they air the old Star Trek episodes at 10PM if I remember correctly.

Western and central MI seems to be showing up almost every early morning lately. On and off loss of more local stations because of it continue to be a problem.
Burst of strong conditions from Flint/Lansing (~100mi) in the early morning.
WLNS RF36, WJRT RF12 were strong for a while. WSYM RF38 briefly. Saw WAQP RF48 TCT also but Chatham's SRC repeater won back over very quickly.
the bad: (cci)
WTVG 13 lost on and off due to WZZM 13
WDIV 45 lost for long periods due to WLLA 45
WWJ 44 weak and flakey due to WZPX 44 ION
and more to a lesser extent.
The Cleveland market was much poorer than typical to, even the power of WEWS was trumped due to probably WDCQ. Good amount of digital snow also from WNEM Saginaw in CIII 22 locally. CHWI also turned a bit snowy from WSMH Flint.
Cleveland is coming in strong. This happens frequently during late afternoons/early evenings before fading out.
Getting RTV poorly on analog 35, and WVIZ low pwr repeater (vry poor mostly audio only) on ch 63 analog.

Something new was trying to breakthrough last night. Picked up normal complement of Rochester UHFs and WSYR Syracuse, with blips from what seems to be that mysterious RF21 (most likely that Watertown channel people have been taking about).
But now something even more mysterious on RF29 wants to come in. Around 20% last night so no lock.
