: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2010 (Closed - use 2011)
DigitalRocks 2010-05-29, 10:56 AM WBGU on 27
Have they upped thier ERP recently or something? I know we've had a fair bit of tropo, but i'm picking up this station almost every night now while pointed towards toledo as it is right in line, just further.
PanaMark 2010-05-29, 12:55 PM nice thing about summer time.
I too have been receiving 27-1 WBGU PBS from here in London, while pointing towards Detroit. Mind you it is not for long periods, none the less, it is in and out reception wise for the last few nights. Just tropo induced.
Phil81 2010-05-29, 11:57 PM Very strong conditions within the last 30 mins though fading fast now from central/northern Michigan.
Even the Global and /A\ locals on 16 and 22 are being brought to their knees, this is very rare.
Bold is another new never before seen station
Just in the last 15 minutes:
WDCQ-DT 19-1 RF15 PBS Bad Axe

Edit2 At 240am WGVU 35-1 PBS Grand Rapids on RF11 (WTOL 11 off the air)
What a crazy night. Loosing most of the local American digital stations even the most powerful ones.
Jase88 2010-05-30, 01:47 AM I did a scan tonight...and wasn't really paying attention. Then attempted to tune to channel 2.1 Buffalo (RF 33 WGRZ), and got Utica 2.1 WKTV-HD (RF 29).
WROC, WYSR, WXXI, etc were also coming in from Rochester.
PanaMark 2010-05-30, 08:34 AM just got my first look at 67-1 WNGS-DT RF 7 from Buffalo area market from here in London. Guess my little VIP VHF has some Dxing merit.
Fantastic bunch of days lately regarding tropo reception. Thanks to all the posts regarding tropo reception from the various area's. It is with these post that I am alerted to possibilities.
Markets I have been receiving reception from through out the past week are
Buffalo NY, Rochester NY, Erie PA, Pittsburgh PA, Youngstown OH, Cleveland OH, Sandusky OH, Toledo OH, Detroit MI, Lansing MI, Flint MI, Bay City/Saganaw MI.
The rotor has been well used.
My television's PISP is littered with call letters from each of these markets.
stampeder 2010-05-30, 12:31 PM Phil81's posts are great templates for DX/Tropo reports, don't you agree? Looking through this and the older thread, I sometimes get bogged down trying to figure out which station is from where, but many of you post the home city of the station too, along with a bit about the weather and sometimes your own gear and situation too, so it is much appreciated.
Thanks all of you for the very helpful and informative DX/Tropo reports. For the newcomers, it's an addicting hobby, that's for sure! ;)
Jase88 2010-05-30, 01:18 PM just got my first look at 67-1 WNGS-DT RF 7 from Buffalo area market from here in London. Guess my little VIP VHF has some Dxing merit.
I've been rethinking the need for a "giant VHF antenna". If it's good enough to get your VHF locals--then it's good enough to pick up DX. When I first started out in OTA, I was amazed at how many tropo stations I could grab while just 28' off the ground.
Though last night I'm not surprised that WNGS would carry far: I was picking it up myself regardless of where the VHF was rotated. Excellent grab from London!
Phil81 2010-05-30, 03:59 PM Much appreciated stampeder.
I like to post exactly what I get and from where, so everyone can see what is going on out there and from where, and where to point to get the best results.
Got the distance from HDTV Mag of WCML 6-1 RF24 Alpena. The longest new pull in several months at 223.65 mi / 359.93 km to the NNW.

WPBN was 240.42 mi / 386.92 km but it lasted only very briefly. Had that same channel back in the mid Jan 2010 huge tropo as well.

PrinceLH 2010-06-01, 11:42 PM Some reasonable DX tonight:
Utica, NY
RF29, channel 2 WKTV
RF30, channel 20 WUTR
Erie, PA
RF 50, channel 54 WQLN
Albany, NY
RF26, channel 10 WTEN
I have picked these up in the past, but for Erie and Albany, it's been a while.
Still looking to nail down WNGS RF7 out of Buffalo, but as of yet no luck. Signal strength out of the west seems strongest tonight, with Buffalo locals in the 90% range.
Phil81 2010-06-02, 01:07 AM same here:
RF39 is sure active tonight with WADL 38-1 Mt Clemens being destroyed and briefly WDLI 17-1 TBN Akron/Canton OH took the spot, and now WIVB 4-1 Buffalo currently
Buffalo (~210 miles NE) first time in a long while getting this market
WGRZ 2-1 NBC RF33 good to strong signal
WNYO 49-1 MyTV RF49 variable
WIVB 4-1 CBS RF39 weak signal
WKBW 7-1 ABC RF38 good signal
WNYB 26-1 TCT RF26 barely decodable (Jamestown NY 174.5 miles)
Getting close on WNGS RF7 even, but strong WJBK will not allow it..will keep trying
Erie (132 miles due E)
WICU 12-1 NBC RF12 weak signal
WJET 24-1 ABC RF24 moderate signal
London (~90 miles NE)
CKXTDT2 19-1 SunTV RF19 weak signal
Lansing/Jackson (~100 miles W-WNW)
WLNS 6-1 CBS RF36 extremely strong
WPXD 31-1 ION RF31 variable signal/on and off at 77 mi
WKAR 23-1 PBS RF40 weak signal <- only 2nd time decoded ever, last time was just on May 24
no DX possible on RF16,22 or 32 to the E or NE due to strong analog channels
local Global repeater on 22 is snowed up a lot from FOX WFXP Erie
local TVO on 32 is the same from CW WNLO Buffalo
Edit: Checked VHF-lo to the NNE.
CH2 CTV? rolling screen terrible b/w unwatchable
CH4 Global? even worse than CH2 98% snow/interference (had Wilkos show id in corner)
Garth J 2010-06-02, 04:19 AM Last night I went to bed early (well, early being 4am - but for me that's pretty early!) I noticed there were slight flickers of signal on the Rochester NY stations, but nothing decoding. So I left my Zenith Digital Box on RF45 thinking that I would wake up and check if the signal for WROC got strong enough to decode. I got up at 11am and found that Detroit's WDIV had come in while I was aimed at Rochester. My jaw totally dropped! I've never picked up Detroit while aimed at Rochester and it was completely gone by the time I woke up. So my guess is that it came in sometime between 4am and 11am, but I have no idea when. I'm curious just how strong that tropo was given that I wasn't even aimed at Detroit! Kinda sad that I missed it!
Tonight all of the Rochester NY digitals are coming in for me, even the VHF ones! Erie, PA's WQLN (RF50) also coming in sporadically. Also noticing flickers of signal on Cleveland stations (RF15, 17, 34) but nothing decoding.
Jase88 2010-06-02, 09:47 AM Detroit and area is a somewhat regular tropo visitor to the GTA and here into Waterloo Region. I saw some interference on WNED (PBS Buffalo) last night which is typically an indicator that Detroit's PBS (on the same channel) is making it's presence known....
bigcam406 2010-06-02, 10:04 AM interesting morning,picking up WSYR-9 Syracuse,WROC-8 Rochester,and previously mentioned Cleveland stations(though not locking on),scanned and picked up 19 stations,5 mins later only 9,go figure.:(
El Gran Chico 2010-06-02, 11:35 AM I was receiving WPSU in State College, PA earlier this morning (RF 15) in Etobicoke. I also saw a few others which I'll need to check the call signs when I get home. That's the furthest stations I've ever received in my 4 years of OTAing.
PrinceLH 2010-06-05, 12:27 AM Following the storm front, coming from west to east, I started picking up the Toronto locals. Even picked up CFTO RF40 and watched the third period of the hockey game, on CBLT RF20. Kept switching it back and forth just to see how clear the uncompressed signal looked, compared to the Starchoice signal, on my 505. Did a scan and found CHCH on RF18, plus the rest of the UHF analog and digital signals coming in strongly, out of Toronto. Tried Buffalo and had many of the signals in the high 90's. Still no RF7, WNGS. It's now at the top of my wish list, right up there with WLED RF48 out of Tupper Lake, that I've yet to see.
Rochester and Syracuse locals were very strong as well. Tried for the southern tier channels from Elmira and Binghamton, but a no go. As the storm front moves further to the east, the Watertown locals were in, in the low 90's, including RF35 LP WNYF in the mid 60's. Swung the array toward Vermont and Albany, but nothing yet. Swung the array a little further north and the Ottawa locals came in strongly. The thunderstorms are bearing down on us, about 30 miles west, so the strong tropo won't last for much longer.
stampeder 2010-06-06, 02:35 PM I hope Phil81 and everyone in the area made it through this tornado okay:Many of the 100-year-old trees along Erie St. — which a local man described as “Leamington’s pride and joy” — were felled during the storm.http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/2010/06/06/14282631.html
Phil81 2010-06-06, 04:12 PM All fine here in the northern areas of town. Lots of flooding rains around 3am, but no damage at all. It's another story about 3.5km south of me though where a tornado did do damage down near the lake.
As of now it's reported that nobody was killed or seriously injured. That's good considering the tornado struck in the early morning hours.
Bad news though for Lake twp OH. (near Toledo) Reports that 5 deaths occurred there.

PanaMark 2010-06-07, 08:24 AM my sister whom lives near Cherry Lane in Leamington lost her entire backyard fence and a few soffit's from one corner of the house. She lost one of three spruce trees also.
My friend on Robson Rd. whom I installed an (attic antenna system) lost a roof vent, a third of an old willow tree fell between their house and their parents house. Also some of the breakwall rocks were thrown to the back yard.
My sister said it sounded like a freight train and the light was green.
My mother works off 18 hwy and the the greenhouse plant was destroyed. Guess she will be off work.
I cannot believe there was no loss of life. I am happy to hear this.
Phil, perhaps a few antenna's will need repairs?
mr weather 2010-06-07, 09:15 AM My in-laws live off Danforth (about 1/2 km north of where the tornado hit) and only had a few branches down. No damage to their house. Interestingly, they only lost hydro for a couple of hours but their Cogeco cable was down all day.
Good photo gallery on the Windsor Star website. One picture is of a tv-style tower toppled over on the roof of a house. The satellite dish mounted on the side bore the full weight of the tower when it came down (with predictable results). The V/U combo antenna on top survived unscathed. :)
PrinceLH 2010-06-07, 10:12 AM Had some lite tropo around midnight last night, picked up a new one from aroung the Finger Lakes region. A Daystar channel, WNYI, RF 20 channel 52.1. Also had a good signal from WNPI, RF23 Channel 18.1. Also had WNYF LP RF35 channel 28 coming in decently after midnight. Some real impressive signal strengths, coming out of Syracuse, also. It was topping around 100% on RF channels 17, 24, 25 and the rest in the low 90's. My Buffalo channels were weak or non existant last night, at the same time.
