STACKS

Been having problems getting my surround speakers to work in 5.1.I just recently(two days back)picked up the Onkyo TX-NR807 and the Bose Acoustimass 15 Series II speaker system.Followed the manual from the get-go.Of course i might of screwed up some how along the way.
All the speakers have been checked and double checked. All speakers(including the surround)work when i playback cds or mini discs or the tv audio for that matter. However when i go to play any dvds that are able to be played back in 5.1 sound all i seem to get are the front left and right and the subwoofer.Sometimes the center as well.
I have an optical cable coming out of my Sony 400 dvd player and into my AVR's IN1 optical(and i assigned this in the speaker set-up on the amp).I then have Component video out as well from my dvd player into the dvd input of my receiever. This is how it is explained on page 31 of my AVR manual.
I do have HDMI inputs and have one set-up as well in the back of the AVR Dvd/BD slot. And,also have the main HDMI cable coming out of my AVR receiver into my tv.Could this be a conflict?
I would perfer to have my dvd,my game consoles all hooked up thru HDMI inputs on the back of the AVR and then have the main HDMI cable out form AVR into my tv.But,had problems w/ this early on.Even have the inputs to each of these connections had been assigned in the "input/output" section on the receiver.
I'm pretty new to all of this. Therefore i seem to ramble and may make things more confusing then they really are.I apologize.
Been at this on & off the past 2 days.Looked over the manual again and fiddled about w/ the set-ups and all,but still nothing.
My remote for my Sony 400 dvd player does not work.A week or so back i picked up logitech remote.I mention this here because, this logitech remote does not seem to allow me to go into the dvd player's set-up and double check to make sure my player's settings are right interms of the outputs and whatnot.I checked all the buttons over and over again on the remote and NOTHING.Also, checked the front of my dvd player and nothing there allows for me to access any dvd player menus to check the output/input settings of this dvd player.Any idea how i can access this?
So,my main question is,does someone have this make and model and perhaps KNOWS for sure what steps i may be missing.Or perhaps someone who has had problems w/ not getting the full 5.1 sound(and NO SURROUND SOUND)could maybe point me in the right direction as to what i may be doing wrong. It may really rely infact on my dvd player and getting access to it's audio/video set-up.My older AVR had no hdmi inputs or outputs. So,if this is the case, could someone maybe tell me how i might be able to access my dvd player's settings?Seeings how the original remote for the unit does not work.Because if this is all it takes then maybe that is the REAL question I AM ASKING.
Sorry for the length. If anyone has any idea-ers or helpful suggestions i sure would appreciate it.You folks have ALWAYS been a great help to me.Anything you can throw my way help-wise would be grrrrreat.
Thx
