I watched Letters from Iwo Jima and Pan's Labyrinth on blu-ray this weekend. I'd say they're both better movies. Why? They both tell a good story.

"The Princess Bride": Nice story, great characters, snappy dialogue, swordplay, True Love and Robin Wright Penn. :D

And all that for only $15M...or just 3% of the cost of "Avatar"! :o

This could be one loooong thread! :p

Avatar is an entertaining movie and a technical marvel, but there are TONS of movies that are better. If you're talking about dramatic impact, emotional impact, acting, scripting, dialog, and substance... I would easily consider at least 80% of the titles in my current movie library to be 'better' than Avatar.

"Pan's Labyrinth" is brilliant. Gorgeous Bluray to boot. That whole knife scene in the cheek...ouch!!!!!

Like Ho Chi Min said when asked about the impact of the French Revolution " to soon to tell"
My best movie would be Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. However it did not age wonderfully, and that is the mark of greatness.

You're saying Butch Cassidy did not age well?

I just watched Butch Cassidy last week. It's still wonderful, and funny. "Jesus, who ARE those guys?", "Think ya used enough dynamite, there, Butch?". Classic lines that still work.
To be honest, the story in Avatar was crap, just a mash up of every cliche in the book. I knew what was going to happen 5 minutes into the movie. In my opinion, James Cameron's storytelling gets worse with every movie he makes. $300,000,000 for that? Think what that money could have been used for, rather than a 3 hour time-waster.

Yup. Big screen eye candy porn, which is great fun, I enjoyed it.

Put a blindfold on and pick one from the DVD bins will likely pick as good a movie or not.

Maybe it was because the movie wasn't hyped like Avatar was, but I was more wowed when I saw Blade Runner in the theater, many, many moons ago.

I haven't seen Avatar yet, but I was thinking of doing the Blade Runner comparison. After watching the HD version last year I was blown away by how far ahead of it's time it was.

Thanks Jem!!! You & I think alike...but I have a feeling we're in the minority!!

I'll agree that Avatar is the best movie EVER, but I'll take it over Blade Runner any day. Second-worst blind buy I've ever done.

I don't even know why I'm contributing to this thread, as the OP's question is far too open for debate...one that will never be won!

EDIT: whoops! meant to say Avatar isn't the best movie ever!! That kinda changes the tone of my post... :p

Blade Runner was and is awesome. Even the original "happy ending" version is better than most Hollywood blockbusters. I had the chance to see it in a theater again when they released the last Directors Cut a few years ago, and it was still great.

The saving grace for me, 1Tribeca, is that I had a free pass for the preview night. Cameron hasn't gotten my $20 yet!
