: One Movie better than Avatar and why?
runnin' 2010-01-26, 09:19 AM Easy, the new Star Trek was everything Avatar was not. Good storyline, good acting, actual character development, and two Spocks!
And it didn't need some hokey mystic religion to substitute for suspense. What was that old Han Solo line? "Hokey religions are no match for a blaster at your side, kid."

dm_4u 2010-01-26, 10:26 AM Crank 2 High Voltage :) Oh wait thats the WORST movie of all time.
100% agreed!
dogpatchkid 2010-01-26, 12:18 PM I haven't seen Avatar yet, but I was thinking of doing the Blade Runner comparison. After watching the HD version last year I was blown away by how far ahead of it's time it was.
I was blown away by Blade Runner when I first saw it. The next time some 20 years later on DVD, it still looked fresh, but the pacing was to slow, that is my complaint about many of the old greats. The sequel to Blade Runner (The 5th element) holds up better.
1tribeca 2010-01-26, 05:28 PM The saving grace for me, 1Tribeca, is that I had a free pass for the preview night. Cameron hasn't gotten my $20 yet!
Really? Damn! I went with my wife and bro-in-law...got hooped for $46!! Atleast the bro picked up the popcorn.
The sequel to Blade Runner (The 5th element) holds up better.
A little off topic but how do do you make the leap of logic to The 5th Element being a sequel to Blade Runner? Great movie for sure but it's no Philip K Dick...
mason 2010-01-26, 07:14 PM "To be honest, the story in Avatar was crap, just a mash up of every cliche in the book. I knew what was going to happen 5 minutes into the movie. In my opinion, James Cameron's storytelling gets worse with every movie he makes. $300,000,000 for that? Think what that money could have been used for, rather than a 3 hour time-waster."
Thanks Jem!!! You & I think alike...but I have a feeling we're in the minority!!
3 amigos.
Avatar was a beautiful movie.... but visually only. I was impressed by the motion capture, it finally looks real But the story and acting stunk. Its a long shot, but Cameron may hire writers for parts 2 & 3.
There are a lot to choose from, my vote for a superior movie is the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and that ain't my favorite genre). Mutil-layered storyline, amazing acting, Liv Tyler.
JesseJ 2010-01-26, 07:55 PM Another one...The Big Lebowski
dezzpayne 2010-01-26, 09:00 PM Every time the wife and I go to Canada's Wonderland we do the Spongebob Squarepants 3D ride because it's the coolest thing at Wonderland. The tale of the crabby pattie and the missing pickle didn't get nominated for best screenplay or picture either but it sure was worth the price of admission!
spensar 2010-01-26, 11:09 PM I'll agree that Avatar isn't the best movie EVER, but I'll take it over Blade Runner any day. Second-worst blind buy I've ever done
Can't compare a DVD now to when it was out fresh at the theatre in its day.
One movie: Inglourious Basterds
Why? Opening scene.
'nuff said.
Well, except for this:
Another better one (I know - you didn't ask, but indulge me): No Country For Old Men
Why? Chigurh's coin-flip with the old man in gas station scene
Cameron can only dream of creating that type of drama - pretty obvious given that $300+M in Avatar and $100+M in Titanic couldn't get it done.
mrdeeds 2010-01-27, 12:28 AM Dark Knight. Not without its flaws, but near flawless in its execution.
JesseJ 2010-01-27, 12:34 AM Watched Magnolia tonight, so, Magnolia
1tribeca 2010-01-27, 07:05 AM Better than "Avatar"? How 'bout most movies ever made!!!!
The "King of The World" should spend some money on writers perhaps?
Then he has the nerve to spew a couple lines of his Na'vi language at the Golden Globes...pompass ass!
Go away Jim!
BHoward 2010-01-27, 07:14 AM WOW ... some one has a big hate on .... wonder if he really just hates the movie or just hates James and, by default, everything he does.
Lighten up and enjoy life a bit more.
dogpatchkid 2010-01-27, 10:42 AM A little off topic but how do do you make the leap of logic to The 5th Element being a sequel to Blade Runner? Great movie for sure but it's no Philip K Dick...
The fifth element world is very similar to Blade Runner, so my leap is that it is a story happening in the same world as Blade Runner, thus a sequel.
spec seven 2010-01-27, 06:04 PM Aliens was a better movie than Avatar. It was a far more exciting movie to watch. There was no tension in Avatar whatsoever. The moment you saw the wheelchair, you knew exactly how the movie was going to end.
ValleyVuer 2010-01-27, 10:47 PM I enjoyed Avatar, but agree with the Aliens vote, and would add Braveheart. During both these movies I had an adrenalin rush during the battle scenes. Not so with Avatar.
JesseJ 2010-01-27, 11:57 PM TTT`s battle was great, ROTK`s was epic. Avatar`s was meh.
Oh, I just thought of another movie, True Lies (know why it was so good? He stole the story from a French movie!) He even had help with Terminator (you think he could come up with hasta la vista baby, after seeing Sully call that creature a "bitch"?)
I like Titanic. But I also think that movie had 2 little things that also made it a better movie, Leo and Kate. I don't care about avatar jake, because he isn't real.
I love the tech. I want to see more movies in this type of 3D. But if more stuff like this comes out I'll stop going to the theater all together. Its just not worth it anymore.
