As of this morning, I still don't see TVGOS updates on my DTVPal. My antenna has been pointed at Buffalo WNED, so it should receive the signal if it's present.

I ended up doing the factory reset on my Sony TV populated my real postal code and now have some listings, so I have listings again using the channel 9.1 tvgos signal. I can fool with it after the cutover.

The first time TVGOS was down in mid-July, is different to now when it is down for a second time.

The first time there were no TV listings and my SONY TV was not doing its usual clicking sound when a TVGOS update was being sent (one can hear this click when the TV is off and does this automatically at the scheduled times).

Now the second time its down, there still are no listings but the clicking is back, telling me that there is transmission of TVGOS from the host station (WNED or PBS?) but the content of the received TVGOS update must be blank hence the fact listing are still not displayed.

Well It's weird, I had done a factory reset and switched to my real canadian postal and received listing, but then lost them again after 2 days, Did another factory reset and switched back to the 14201 postal and now have listings again for the time being. Seems like a bumpy ride..

Hi

I have a question about TVGOS and ROVI.
I have a 3 years old Sony TV and it has TVGOS, use OTA and live in Toronto.
I set it up for US zip (PBS) and I know right now there is no info...

Now my question:
I went to Futureshop and new Sony TVs (like EX720) now have ROVI logo on the box instead of TV Guide (TVGOS), does anyone knows what is the difference.

Also in Samsung newer TVs, in Smart Hub, it has ROVI app, does anyone knows how it is going to work?

Please help as I need to decide what TV to buy.

From what I understand TVGOS has gone though a number of owners and with consolidatons and mergers rampant in the media industry ROVI has emerged as the latest owner. But ROVI offers a whole host of media software and primarily for the purpose of delivering advertising information to the public so their focus is advertising revenue generation for commercial applications, check their site.

So the fact that ROVI stamped on the box instead of TVGOS may represent the fact that that TV has more than just TVGOS but other ROVI software as well. Best to ask ROVI via email/phone or contact the manufacturer rather than a sales clerk who may or may not know the full answer. ROVI did a great job of communicating with me when I had questions.

The Samsung Smart Hub looks like the next major leap in TVs with connection to the internet for hundreds of various apps such as Netflix in addition to TVGOS.

I have a older 2-3 old sony it's listed as TVGOS, I also have a 2011 sony EX620 which has rovi stamped on the box. As far as I can tell the guide is the same except the newer 2011 guide UI is different. The 2011 model also has the ability to get the guide from the internet or from the tuner (I use tuner)

As far as functionality they are very similar, and seem to carry the same info except the newer TV has the newer UI, I actually kinda like the old one better, but it still works the same.

I always wondered what the heck that clicking sound my Sony made occasionally was, and now I know. Thanks :D

"Rovi" has been the same company (Gemstar) for several years. Rovi is just the latest name, coming from Macrovision, one of Gemstar's products.

@mvclear

Thanks for information.
I guess having the option to get the listing from internet is very good since recently the feed from tuner is not reliable.

can you test if you get the listing from internet (your newer tv with rovi) is it same info?
does it show the info when you are watching a channel and hit "display" in remote?

In Samsung, i got the listing from internet but when watching the channel, cannot get the info for the current program.

I've just noticed that ZAP2it now indicates new shows with a blue rectangle with the word "NEW" in it.

They also now have tags for LIVE, PREMIER and FINALE.

The Info on the Sony TV is the same from the internet or from the tuner. It does display the show detail when you hit the info/display button when watching a program. The feed is exactly the same, I just happen to use tuner as it seems to be working ok, when it works. If one is down the other is down as well, the internet option allow you to "refresh" the guide any time of the day while the tuner updates overnight.

I think I see a pattern here with the data provided in TVGOS and the recent disruptions of receiving that data. Data provided is now down to 1 day rather than the multi-day data which used to be provided. ROVI, owners of the software, wrote me that while they support SONY, they do not support my DTVPal DVR.

Because ROVI delivers advertising along with the TV Guide information I can see why they support SONY but not the DVR which only displays TV Guide data but no advertising.

Right now I get no listings on my SONY (likely need to rescan) but used to have 2 days worth of program data, and with my DVR I used to get 7 days but receive only 1 day right now.

I think that is all we will see for the future, only 1 day of data; gone is the multi-day data since it primarily benefits those who set their DVR recording schedule well in advance. Time to check ZAP2IT for the multi day TV schedule.

MonopolyBuster, WNED TVGOS is down again. I think what you are seeing is cached data from the last update before it went down. Tomorrow, there will be nothing (if I'm right).

WNED posted a cryptic message on Facebook yesterday. Basically their engineers are still working on the problem. No ETA for resolution.

MonopolyBuster: You're likely just receiving PSIP data from the stations themselves--which generally provides about 24 hours of data.

Further to not providing ads per Rovi's business model, the CM7000PAL does not support Canadian addresses. According to a recent discussion with Channel Master, the company does not have immediate plans to support TVGOS in Canada via OTA or Ethernet anytime soon, despite setting "plenty" of these units in Canada. Very disappointing, IMO.

Jase88, I don't mind if Canadian stations are excluded from the DVRs made in the past or in the present, all I want is my 7 day listings back. For the last week all the DVR does is update on a 24 hour cycle, so data is getting to me, but its just one day at a time.

Jase88,
Just trying to get this straight, so you are using the TVGOS function of your CM-7000?
Connecting to an analog TV with the TVGOS feature using the TVGOS cable to connect the two?

If they don't support Canadian addresses, what Zip Code are you using?
I don't know if either of you can ever get Rochester reliably, but the CBS Station WROC UHF 45 appears to carry
TVGOS over there. Curious, how TVGOS works, does each station carrying it transmit data for every
ZIP code in the US and u tell ur box which ZIP code u want, or does each station carrying it only carry what should be receivable in that area
and ya still have to provide a ZIP code u want??

...the CM7000PAL does not support Canadian addresses. According to a recent discussion with Channel Master, the company does not have immediate plans to support TVGOS in Canada via OTA or Ethernet anytime soon,...

More like never. Channel Master doesn't control the firmware source code to make the change to the "location" screen to add Canadian postal codes (Echostar owns the source code - I understand that modules are shared with Dish Network DVRs). That's why we need to use the closest US Zip code that shares most of the stations (if applicable).

Channel Master would need a pretty compelling business case to get Echostar to change the source code for OTA DVRs on their behalf.
