With, among other things, the ability to transfer information from an old PS3 to a new one using a LAN cable.

Finally!

I'll be buying a new one soon and will definitely make use of this.

Maybe it'll mysteriously fix my BD drive problems?

It sounds as though certain material (such as game saves and PSN games) will be removed from the old machine when transferred to the new machine. I hope we can pick and choose what we want to transfer because I've already manually copied over a lot of my stuff, and the only thing I'd like to copy over now is the few copy-protected saves left on my old machine.

Update is already out there, don't see any changes though. Guess it's just the transfer functionality mentioned above.

Yeah, I'll have to try it out after work and see if Dragon Age saves copy over.

If not, and it's true that protected saves can't be migrated in any way, that's an uber pain with games like rpgs.

Well, I'd suggest you don't try it, since it's already been mentioned multiple places that copy-protected saves won't transfer, AND you run the risk of the other stuff that's copied over being deleted from the initial PS3 (also mentioned multiple places). While my initial thought was to try it myself, once I read that the material would be removed from the first PS3, and that many people have reported copy-protected saves won't copy using the new tool, I decided not to waste my time.

Trophy sync'ing is fixed. It was lightning fast for me last night after playing a bit of MCLA

I was able to transfer all my copy-protected saves using the new fw.

Process was a little slow, however. But at least it worked.

Would there be any way to meld my old 60 gb data that has some copy protected saves I couldn't transfer to my ext. drive a few months ago and the data that I have gathered since I bought the slim? It wouldn't transfer KZ2 or Superbike Info.

prufrock, well, that's awesome!

What was the process you went through? Did you already have some saves on your new PS3, or was it completely empty? What happened to the saves on the old machine that were copied over?

Right now I have my new machine the way I want it, minus the few copy-protected saves I can't get off the old machine, and I'd rather not mess the new one up by trying to copy these protected saves over.

Gord,

The copy protected files and content get erased off of the original hard drive when transferred to the new one. I was formatting it anyway to use as a media server, so I didn't care.

I had a brand new machine with no content on the drive, so I can't say for sure whether it copies the data over piecemeal or as a complete image, so to speak.

That's a great question, now that I think about it. I wanted everything...but what if you don't. I think it should work.

You could always backup your new drive, try the transfer, and if it screws up, transfer the files back (if you want to keep them), and restore from the backup.

As a reference, my 80 GB had 65 GB of data, and it took about 4 hours to backup. The transfer was about 2 hours, so it's faster.

Yeah, I think I'll leave it as-is for now. It's only a couple save files, and not for games I'll spend much time playing. By the time I need them Sony may have an even newer utility to transfer them over.
