debating adding another hdd to my htpc setup with dual tuner hd ota recording. i'm wondering if a western digital green drive would be a decent option, or could it have problems with write speed if i'm recording 2 hd channels at once and thus perhaps i should stick with a 'black' drive for the improved performance. although it's louder, hotter and more expensive.

opinions?
thanks

2 recordings to a single drive should be no problem.
Even if it's horrendously fragmented, OTA streams are only like 2MB/s. Hard drives can usually do a good 10-20x that.

The 1TB WD Black is good for 85MB/sec and the Green 75MB/sec on writes. There are other drives that are slightly faster but, considering the advantages of the WD green, I don't see it making a worthwhile difference. Seeks from other disk operations (such as virus scanning) are going to affect disk speed more than anything else. For that, an SSD would be better but costs and capacity are not comparable.

so i s/b fine with the green then? i can basically get 1.5 tb green for the price of 1 tb black.

I just 'rescued' 700GB of data on my WD10EAVS (green 8mb ache 1TB drive).
The drive was in a USB enclosure. It ran non stop for 35 hours and it's not even warm to touch.

There is no problem at all streaming OTA or recoding OTA for that matter. If you do a lot of files transfer, the speed is a little slow. The thermal property and quietness is so good it's not even funny. I have a WD15EADS and that drive is good too.

I asked the same question in this thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=112598). I bought the 1TB Caviar Green (W10EADS) and I can tell you that it can easily record from 4 tuners (2 1080i ATSC HD and 2 NTSC analog ) while playing back an HD recorded program. It is very quiet and cool. I waited for NCIX to put it on sale for $85.00.

Windows 7 Media Center on an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with Athlon 64 X2 3800 and 3GB RAM. ATI AIW HD, Vista View Saber and Hauppauge PVR-150.
