I have a 60 GB PS3 that seems to be disconnecting from the playstation network while playing online games. I have tried it both wired/wireless to my router. [Linksys WRT54G2]

The only way it seems to work is when I hook up the shaw modem's Internet directly into the PS3. When I Do it like that it works fine

Question I ask is, will shaw give me another modem so I can have it directly hooked into my PS3 as I do heavy online play.

Two modems means you would have to pay for two separate accounts. Doable, but a waste of money. It is much more likely that you just have to forward the correct ports on your router to the PS3

I have tried forwarding the ports and it does no have any real effect, unless I am doing it wrong but I did follow the steps on portforward.com

No. The fact that it works in one configuration and not others suggests its a setup issue, not a hardware issue.

I would try another router if you can. I personally haven't ever had a good experience with Linksys.

I suggest getting a Linksys WRT54GL (the L is very important) and installing DD-WRT firmware. This combination handles UPnP port forwarding very well and has a host of preconfigured port forwarding options. The regular Linksys firmware and other models are not nearly as good.

You could also try enabling UPnP on the current router. Alternately, give the PS3 a static IP. Then find what ports the PS3 uses for games and forward them manually. Another option would be to put the PS3 in a DMZ but that is much less secure.

Try turning off the media sharing option in network options. I have precisely the same router and PS3 model as you and experienced the same problem until I disabled media sharing.

Just find a signal splitter. They cost about $10 and work like a charm :)

friend of mine is having same issues with a wrt610n i believe the model is. seems like there is maybe a need of firmware update for ps3's. or perhaps just something with linksys firm. unsure, his setup looked fine, two other wireless clients on the network, and one other wired, yet ps3 is only one that reliably drops.

my xbox 360 also some problems with my WRT610N, i'm always on moderated NAT, althought i don't seem to have problems when connecting with other peoples using open NAT

You can always get the 1mbps plan for your ps3 :eek:

Shaw usually gives you two IP addresses.....now as this is fact, why not get a simple little 4 port 10/100MBPS switch....wire it to the modem, then feed the PS3 and router off the switch, the router will function as per usual and the PS3 will be experiencing a direct connect to the modem so to speak. Just an idea.

BTW, Shaw includes two IP addresses — unless you've signed up for High-Speed Lite, where you get just one.
