: XBOX Live and two consoles

Greetings,

I recently purchased a new XBOX 360 Elite console, and moved my old (Pro) model to another TV (upstairs). I've immediately run into a couple problems, and I'm curious what the best solutions are:

- Games purchased from the online marketplace on the original console are not available on the new console (i.e. it doesn't work like Steam)
- The old console doesn't seem to like the fact that I "recovered" my XBOX Live account on the new console. Is there something special I need to do in order to access my XBOX Live account no matter which console I'm using?

Also, are games purchased from the online marketplace tied to your hardware, or are they tied to your XBOX Live account, or a combination of the two of those things?

I guess I have been spoiled by Steam, so I just assumed that the XBOX worked the same way.

The way that Xbox live works for content purchased on the marketplace, is the console that originally downloads it recieves the rights to play the DLC at any time. Any gamertag that gets loaded or created on that console, can play and get achievements to that game as if they own it.

Now, for a second console, the only way to have access to the content that is stored on another console, is to be signed into Live with the purchasing Xbox Live profile. But unlike the original Xbox, any other gamertags loaded onto the second Xbox will not be able to play the content, nor will even the purchasing profile, unless it's signed in to Xbox Live.

As far as the issue of recovering the gamertag, I assume you don't try and use both consoles with the same gamertag at once correct? Your best method to be able to swap between the two consoles without having to constantly recover your gamertag, is to either swap the same hard drive with the profile on it, or much easier, store your gamertag on a Memory Unit. This is what I do between my consoles and it also makes it easier to go to a friends place and load your character up in Rock Band for instance. Just only use the memory unit to sign into Live with, and you will never have to worry about recovering your gamertag again.

Side note, if you go the Memory Unit route, don't buy one of those Datel 2GB memory cards. It might seem like a bargain but come the 17th of November those will be disabled from working with the Xbox 360.

Hope this helps.

Okay, I'll pick up a memory unit. Thanks for the tip.

Now, regarding next steps, I should be able to play the DLC on the new xbox as long as my XBOX Live account is logged in?

As long as the purchasing gamertag is signed onto Live, yes, you can use the DLC on the second console. Infact, if the same arcade game was on both consoles, and you had two different gamertags, the original purchasing on the secondary xbox, and some other second gamertag on the original console, you could play the same game together if it was a multiplayer title, because of the way the DRM works.
