global 6.1 was working sunday, since then it"s gone , maybe it"s a weak signal from Paris ,or i need a higher location for my antenna,

Last night was the worst night I've had so far for kitchener reception. It was strange, normally if I point right at kitchener I get snr 19 and pointed 180 degrees away I get snr 17. Last night pointed away I was only getting snr 14 but pointed right at kitchener I was only at snr 12. I don't know what would cause this unless there was co-channel from Rochester or Ottawa or somewhere in that direction. This morning was a little better, I was getting snr 17 pointed away but still only 15 pointed right at kitchener. Anyone have any ideas on what might be killing my Kitchener reception?

There was very heavy rain in the area last night. That can block higher frequencies and affect TV signals. My S/NR was actually pretty good. That was probably due to lack of interference.

watching the hockey game in beautiful HD on CBC, wait...
there is no HD CBC in London....
lol what a joke.

yup. It's totally enraging! The online stream looks like garbage too.Marc here on the forums says they've ordered new encoders though, so it'll be better in the future.

Mark, you can take comfort in knowing that I was enjoying the game on CBC in HD, until some tropo rolled in and wiped out the station for me.

I never get tropo co-channel on CBC RF 20 out of Toronto. Never. Until tonight.

Ugh. WTF are 20 out of London and 20 out of TO doing so close to one another -- its a silly allocation!

I don't know if CBC is having trouble with their transmitter or if they normally go off the air at times. I occasionally have a visit from our old friend ION on RF23. When this happens, a quick flip to 23 analog shows no signal. I can't see ION taking out the CBC but I guess anything is possible. Hmmm.

It's the same with 29 CIII Oil Springs and 29 CBC Paris. The CBC basically flipped their finger at me by saying that IC and the CRTC allowed the allocation so it's my problem, not theirs. IC didn't respond to my inquiry.

@ImHooked
these fall tropo days are producing long last strong distant signals.

I had ION 23-1 RF reception this weekend and it totally killed analog 23 CBLN. Digital snow could be seen in the analog signal and after a few attempts I had ION coming in.

Side note: I was watching the ALCS last night over on channel WFXP 22-1 RF22 Erie FOX and kept getting reception problems from a strong tropo RF22 Stevenson Global out of Leamington.

I enjoy tropo while others hate it.

Actually I had the antenna pointed towards Youngstown and channel 19-1 SUN and 20-1 OMNI were both wiped out from two Youngstown RF19, and RF20 that I did not manage to decode, but I know they were the culprits.

Man I love uncompressed HD vs BDU's crap feeds!:p

Okay, so I tried to watch my beloved Leafs first game of the season last Thursday evening, but CBLN's signal was nowhere to be found. I'm only about 35Kms away from the CBLN antenna and in spite of this, CBC's signal was nil at my location. My question is, what is the point of having a rebroadcast transmitter in London if it runs diddly squat power? At least when CBC was running their transmitter on channel 40, I could receive it clearly with a piece of wire indoors.

On another note, I don't know what is up with Global 29 out of Oil Springs. It seems to have vanished. One week ago 29 was as clear as one could receive an analogue signal at my location.

Anyone else notice 29 is MIA?

@Gentleman

I posted earlier that CBLN RF23 analog London does suffer from tropo related issues with ION WVPX RF23 23-1 Akron. Considering that, and the fact you are in Port Stanly I would gauge that this is the culprit. Especially if you have been receiving CBC post digital transition.

As far as Global CIII RF29 analog, I cannot help ya there. All my televisions have 30-1 WGTE RF29 from Toledo programmed in the PISP. I have become an analog snob since the transition and I don't both checking with Global's RF29 nor CTV's RF42. I just wish analog would go away.

CBC putting CBLN on RF23 in analog really only serves the London area and people out of this grade are SOL. Yes there was a petition to help save it, but it may have done more damage with this band-aid then it actually help it.

Mark:

Thanks for the commentary. I'm just frustrated that a national public broadcaster with my tax dollars no less is not properly serving the public good. We were barely able to receive CBLN post transition without tropo interference.

Anyway, Global (CIII 6-1) here has been spotty at best post transition. 29 from Oil Springs was our fall back and it seems to have disappeared. I guess it's time for me to unpack the 9 element Delhi FM yagi and hoist it up the tower. I hope it has some gain for VHF channel 6.

BTW, Global national was here tonight broadcasting live from our train station. Was able to take in a remote news cast. Very interesting.

Don't know it I am doing this correctly but I am having trouble getting Channel 6-1- signal strength shows 90 to 100% but I either don't get it or it breaks up continually, channel 11-1 rarely comes in at all. I am located just outside of Woodstock and my antenna is about 20ft from ground level. I get great reception on 10-1,13-1,28-1 and 31-1
Thank you

@racenail5, what kind of gear do you have and how is it pointed? Does it have a clear view of the horizon? Based on your results you should have an easy time with CIII!

ScaryBob

I wouldn't trust TV Fool reports for CIII but, at 12 miles, it should be easy to pick up. FM overload or multipath may be an issue, especially if the antenna is not pointed directly at the CIII transmitter.

My antenna is a round Mini-State Model # 5MS740. I can go throught the full 360 degrees with the rotor and the reception does not get better, and only get slightly worse at the worst. Clear view of the horizon is probably not feasible as we live in an area surrounded by forrest, but the closest trees are almost 100 yards away to the east and 400 yards to the north and west.
Tv is a Panasonic plasma TC-P42530 new in July. CIII comes in great for a short time then pixelates, or pauses, or just disappears, signal strength on TV usually show 98 to 100 percent with antenna control saying south and goes a low as 75 pecent with antenna at North. Reception does seem better in day time on CIII. Much of the time I show a poor to no signal for 11-1 CHCH tv

racenail5, there is a problem with this transmitter, or it's impacted by strong co-channel interference via tropo on a regular basis. Probably the former.

I lose this station for brief periods almost every evening. And I'm LOS with a 68' tower, and only 11.8 miles (18.99km) from the transmitter. I can still see the signal (32dB SNR), but no video/audio. I also see breakups/pixelation.

It seems the folks in the Ottawa area are experiencing similar issues with their channel 6 transmitter on CIII. It could be that these two transmitters (Ottawa and Paris) are fed by microwave, which is notoriously unreliable in spring and fall when temperatures change drastically from daytime to night. There has also been localized fog in the rural areas where the transmitter is located, which also impacts microwave.

I've been attempting to reach the technical staff at Global/Shaw to get their input. I'll post my progress in the network/station status thread for Global.

racenail5, you will require a higher gain antenna and a pre-amp to achieve any reliability with CHCH Hamilton (RF 11). I would consult the Antenna Chart (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=97121) for a recommended model, or consider recommendations made in this thread.
