Canada's pretty slow moving in the DTV world (like that's a real shocker). The only thing in our neck of the woods is CKXT-DT (Sun TV in London) on Channel 19. It's not very high powered, so I really doubt you'll get it except when there's some tropo maybe. There's a bunch of stuff in and around Toronto, but it's also low powered and much to far away from Leamington.

More on WFXP-DT 22, Erie, Pa reception in St. Thomas, On. Average signal level on my Samsung tv's signal meter is 70 to 80%. As I said in my earlier post, it's in with full lock 99% of the time. In fact it's my regular OTA Fox station.

So just one digital channel is able to be picked up in London it sounds like? Can anyone confirm this? I plan on picking up a basic indoor antenna from walmart or best buy to try it out

That is correct. SunTV is the only digital channel on the air in London.

Nobody in London has replicated Zornblad's reception of FOX DT Erie in St. Thomas?

I currently have a little phillips "set top" indoor antenna and I get decent (some snow) reception on the TV channels that come in. I was wondering how much of a difference an outdoor antenna would make if I mounted it in my upstairs window. I live in a condo so I can't mount antenna outside. The window faces almost due south and I live in Ontario and would like to pick up the US stations from Buffalo etc.

I live in Tillsonburg Ontario. THe closest major intersection is Broadway and North Streeet

You could try a larger outdoor antenna, mounted inside, behind furniture or in a closet, but TV reception is all trial and error. Good luck.

hi crowellsr

Your closest US stations are from Erie, PA. (80 miles)
Where as Buffalo is like 110 miles from you. (You may also want to check into Detroit/Cleveland channels).

Note: I pick up 9 clear + 3 not so clear channels in London (A, CTV, CTS, tvo, Sun (digital), Om2, global, city, CBC, E!, CBCf, Om1). And most of what the Canadian Network shows is the same thing as the US Networks.

Good Luck,
Alvaro.

Location: Tillsonburg Ontario
Elevation 265m (865ft)

I am looking to either buy or build an antenna to be able to get some of the HDTV channels and SD channels from our southern neighbors. The antenna needs to be at most 33"hx 23"w x 3 1/2" deep. Does anyone have a GH design thjat is smaller than this? Any suggestions on a purchased antenna that is smaller than this and will do the trick?

Thanks

Steve

Are there plans to add CBC OTA HD in the London area?

Also what antenna would i need to get CBC HD that is broadcast from Toronto area?

Too bad the only OTA HD channel broadcasting in the London area at this time is SUN TV:

19.1 CKXT-DT SUN-HD
19.2 CKXT-DT SUN-SD

Hopefully other OTA channels in the London area will begin broadcasting in HD soon!

See the post by stampeder @ CRTC to hold public OTA Hearings in 2009 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=93275). Hopefully more information for OTA HD will be available in April and September 2009.

Curious, why can we pickup in London HD Sun TV yet not CBC since both are transmitted from Toronto?

susudh, SUNTV broadcasts from London, not Toronto. You will not get any Toronto stations in London.

You can look up exact locations of stations in Ontario in the Industry Canada database of TV stations:

http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations/

And please read these links:

Hi Guys,

WFXP-DT (Fox Erie, Pa channel 22) is now in 99% of the time here in St.Thomas, On (South of London) They're advertising that they're now available in HD at full power (860kw erp @ 720p). No sub channels at this time.

Recently I did a quick experiment to see what others had already confirmed about OTA in London, particularly in the north of the city.
I recently purchased a Plasma HD TV and really wanted to compare my Rogers HD STB vs OTA.
First I picked up a pair of Philips amplified 46dB rabbit ears from a local electronics shops (the box it came in made me think they were refurbished).
I did a scan and it came up with 8 analog stations and 2 digital
10,14,18,19.1,19.2,20,31,40,53,69. Please refer to previous posts throughout for other channel call letters and reception.
I was only really concerned with 19.1 SUN TV HD for my experiment
I was able to tweek my signal to around 87% for this digital channel.
The rabbit ears are located just beneath my tv on a tv stand right beside my STB but I was not really concerned, considering I was able to get a decent signal strength for SUN TV at this location. I think I am roughly 10 to 15 km's from transmission tower according to maps I have read here on the forum.
I took some time to check the difference and really found not a whole lot to the naked eye difference regarding picture quality.
Up until the about 5 years ago I lived in the Essex county which was a hot bed for OTA and since moving here I really feel left out of fine OTA choices.
Even if I was to rig myself with a decent antenna I really feel my American OTA channels would be to hard to pull in. Heck the nearest Global TV tower is like 70 km's away.
Hearing that someone from St.Thomas picking up a FOX station from Erie was a promising lead but unfortunate a little to far from London.
Guess I'm stuck forking out the bucks to pay for my HD signals for the next while. Hope this assists anyone in the area that gets OTA fever.
I took medicine for my fever but it is hard to cure when there is nothing out there.
Regards

PanaMark, I don't believe there is much HD programming on SunTV. Did you take that into account when you compared it with cable? A proper HD signal on DTV is easily noticeable as superior to cable HD. It may take quite awhile for DTV to really be worthwhile for most Londoners, sadly.

stamp, I am not sure if I was comparing apples with apples now.
I was assuming that the program was filling the screen in 16:9 aspect and FULL that the program was HD content. I mean the picture is fantastic either through STB mode or OTA.
I guess what you are saying is the picture could be great in HD (1080i) but a particular program which has (HD) beside it could even have a better picture? If this is the case, then Londoners are truly missing out on uncompressed content.
Thank you for this wonderful insight,
Mark

I reacall that SUNTV was airing some ture HD stuff right from HD NET on Weekends at midnight? I would check their schedaule, This was a month or so back when I was doing some late night scanning. Also, PanaMark welcome to the let down that is London OTA, With the economy I doubt if we will see more HD before 2011 here in London.
