If you live in the U.S... :(

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/10/netflix-coming-soon-to-playstation-3/

We’re excited to announce today that Netflix and Sony have partnered to bring you thousands of movies and TV episodes streamed instantly from Netflix to your TV via your PS3 system at no extra charge. When the application launches next month, you’ll be able to access and watch thousands of Netflix choices directly through the XMB. We think that the nearly nine million PS3 enthusiasts and 11.1 million Netflix members in the U.S. will make quite a match.

If you want to get a head start on your PS3 Netflix experience, you can sign up today at http://www.netflix.com/ps3.

What would stop them from offering a similar service here, through zip.ca?

I just read the release in more detail. $8.99 for *unlimited* is quite the sweet deal. If I only watch two movies in a month it's already worth it. And since they include TV shows, I could cancel my cable TV, jack up my cable internet and just stay awy from TV message boards (since I wouldn't be watching the shows until a year later). Do you have any idea how much personal time I will reclaim if I stop reading those message boards?

Netflix already offers the streaming service, it's just that now the 360 and PS3 will be able to deliver the streams.

As far as I know, Zip.ca doesn't do video streaming...

It's too bad we get the shaft on the streaming and movie downloads off PSN. Who can we direct our angst too? Barring a name and address I'll just say it's the CRTC and be done with it.

It's the same reason why you can't watch stuff from U.S. websites like CBS.com/MTV.com etc. They don't have the rights to distribute the content up here. The Canadian Networks/Distributers do.

Zip.ca has stated in their forums that they are considering this service.

Back OT...
I wonder if Netflix's service will be tied to address or IP? I do have a US residence as well. I know that Hulu, and cbs.com, etc are IP. Has anyone actually verified that Canfilx streaming won't here (if you register with a US address)?

I think the US store uses some kind of IP filtering. It'd be interesting to see if you could download the app off the PS store (by taking the PS3 to the US, or something), and then whether it's also IP filtered after that.

Not sure if it is a downloadable app. When they were doing the survey, the survey said it would a a disc that you put in the PS3 to install. A download would make a lot more sense, since it is a streaming service!

I have some good PS3 online buddies in the US that trust me with their account info. I'll see if I can try their Netflix stuff and report back...

I would subscribe to a service like this in a heartbeat if I could get it in Canada... :(

You need a disc, and you need to use the disc every time you stream (for now):

So Netflix is indeed coming to PlayStation 3, but there's a catch, and that is a disc will be required for use -- not just for a one-time install, but every time you want to stream. Joystiq shot some questions off to the company, who justified this as being "fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3" and that an embedded software solution through XMB will be coming late next year. The 360 app isn't that hard to download - create a U.S. profile, sign in with that and download it.

Setting up the Netflix account is another story. You need a CC with a U.S. billing address, and they do IP filtering as well. So you'd need a U.S. proxy server that has enough bandwidth to spare...

I don't understand how an HD streaming service is of any use to us (especially here in Canada) when we are being overcharged for ISP service and limiting most of us to 60GB per month?

If I start streaming HD movies, I'm going to be hitting 60GB pretty quickly!!

hehe...why do you think the ISP's have put in these caps? They thought ahead... but no worries they offer you "comparable" services for an extra fee

Good point Glen. How does that work? How do people who pay a legit Netflix fee get to bypass monthly caps?

Even if this was available in Canada, the disc requirement is a dealbreaker for me. If I have to walk all the way over to my PS3 just to load a disc, it might as well be a Blu-ray

They say it's just a temp solution until they establish something more elegant. I agree though. As long as you need to put in a disc it's more trouble than it's worth. Probably just want this out the door sooner rather than later.

Agreed. I use my internet pretty heavily (VOIP, AppleTV, PS3 online gaming, multiple computers) and I ALWAYS hit the high 50's in bandwidth use each month.

you forgot the first step...pay $50 to Microsoft for 'gold' membership!

Apparently the use of a disc is to get around some agreement with MS.

Maybe by using the disc it's not considered "streaming" or something similar. If I were MS I would probably start taking offense :p They keep paying out the wazoo for "exclusives" whereby the content provider just finds a loophole and brings Sony into the fold anyway.

This article made me laugh.

“Xbox 360 players often complained ‘why aren’t these parts voiced?’, so when making the PS3 version we first set about improving the voicing … As a result, the entire main scenario became fully voiced.”

“We’d be delighted if those who played the Xbox 360 version would play the PS3 version too. Of course the same goes for those playing for the first time.”

“We made a lot of changes we think Xbox 360 players would be sure to appreciate.”

“There are a lot of elements from the Xbox 360 version which were improved, so please give it a try.”

“Based on the feedback so kindly provided by Xbox 360 players, we added a lot of additional elements.”
