Nice photos. Wow I wish i had taken a photo of the WPXJ tower. I went by it on my way to Baltimore on the weekend. I could see it in the distance near Pavillion NY.

Here in the midst of the Canadian DTV transition the transmitter gear from the exciter to the broadcast antenna has been unique between the three big networks. From what I've seen: CTV has been using Rohde & Schwarz everywhere but I don't know if a contractor is doing the work Global's gear is been provisioned turn-key by Larcan CBC provisions its own with a variety of gear including Tandberg As we saw in the recent OMNI Calgary photo, Rogers is also using Rohde & Schwarz and doing its own workCan anyone in the industry confirm or correct the above info, and does anyone have info on the gear/company being used by TVA, Citytv, and other Canadian OTA networks or stations?

I have added to my profile an album of pictures of the Mount Mansfield transmitters site. This has got to be one of the most spectacular sites a TV antenna could wish for to do its work ... what a view!

Yikes, this guy made his way into the KIRO compound, over some razor wire, and climbed all the way up to the top of the tower (600+ feet), all the while bathing himself in massive RF, then climbed down to the waiting arms of the Seattle police.

Here's a picture I took yesterday of the upper platform of the Mont-Royal broadcast tower. It shows the currently installed antennas on the northern side of the platform, including a temporary Dielectric antenna that is being used for CFCF for the duration of the replacement of the old CFCF Alford antenna on the SW corner. Regarding FM radio, the new ERI Rototiller antenna on the NE corner will combine CBF, CHMP, CJPX and CFQR.

At the center of this picture: the new Dielectric Batwing Antenna for CFCF and CFTM. It is located at the SW corner of Mont-Royal tower platform. It replaces the Alford 1046R antenna that had transmitted CFCF since 1961.

Great photos, schoenbe.

The FM radio antennas are always easy to spot due to their globular elements (for broadcasting with both horizontal and vertical polarity).

For what it's worth - with just a few weeks away from CBFT's and CBMT's digital transmitters moving to the Mont-Royal tower - here are the current CBFT-DT and CBMT-DT antennas, on top of the Radio-Canada building on René-Lévesque Blvd in downtown Montreal. Both are ERI AL8 antennas. http://www.eriinc.com/pubs/080322001-W.pdf

A word of caution, I got queasy just watching this... :)

That was awsome!

Freaked me out when they get up to the antenna above the tower level and then they have to 'free climb' on those tiny little pegs with no harness and then scale up onto to the antenna's mast where there are no pegs at all.

You could tell that his arms were weakening while climbing those pegs.

From the antenna level at the top, you can see the curvature on the horizon. Note that they stated the visible horizon is 55 miles at that level.

I've still got sweaty palms from watching it, at one point I was tell the guy to keep one hand on the tower at all times :)

I'm not sure what they were fixing at the top, maybe the light?

When the voice over said you could see 55 miles I just about fell out of my seat, that is just not right in my mind.

"Gided tower"??? "guided tower"??? Perhaps he meant "guyed tower".

Also, I see he didn't mention the CN Tower, which is even higher. Back when it was being built, the iron workers building the steel inner core of the mast also had to work without a safety line.

I didn't realize that OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) rules allowed for free climbing. I personally don't free climb, but I could see how it would benefit climbers on such a high tower--far less time to the top.

Far less time to the bottom too! ;-)

The dude in Post #91 was free climbing too (shown at about 1:25 in working on KOMO's tower) and you can see his carabiner straps dangling from his belt unused. I'm pretty sure that's against regulations.
