: TV stations now allowed to air unlimited amount of commercials
rpokane, quite possibly but you may find that some Canadian shows become 40 or 42 minutes per hour instead of 44 minutes, especially big rated stuff like news.
Off course, this will be rationalized as the only was to pay for local and Canadian programming.
llcarlos 2009-09-02, 05:18 PM Shows like The Simpson's can easily be cut down right now. They've already cut out 90 seconds to reflect the ad time rule changes from 2006. That's why you no longer see the scene where Apu is in bed with Mrs. Crabbapple and he is wondering how the store is doing with Homer working the night shift. Prepare to lose another 90 seconds.
El Gran Chico 2009-09-02, 05:24 PM Canadian networks won't start editing U.S. shows to let them run more commercials as they would lose their right to simsub if 5% or more of the show is altered.
Ohhh, but they are so clever. One of the neat things about a dual tuner OTA DVR is that you can record both the US and Canadian network versions, and find the subtle edits that Global/CTV make.
rpokane 2009-09-02, 05:40 PM How far in advance do Cdn networks receive the US shows? If they edit for more commercials, it would have to be done in such a way not to disrupt the story flow. Or shows can end at 9:19 and next one start at 9:23
Danster 2009-09-02, 05:55 PM I wish i could start my own tv station. I would have 24 hours a day of nothing but commercials. Then, seeing my station isn't making too much money, I'd lobby, cry and sniffle my way to the CRTC asking for a special fee to help me survive. Yup. I think I can do it. :o
Seriously, with all these commercials, how come my monthly bills keep going up anyways? Wouldn't they help me cut costs down? If it was so, I could live with a few more ads on tv.
TV is getting worse each year. Too much politics involved!
Francois Caron 2009-09-02, 06:03 PM I wish i could start my own tv station.
Go ahead! I'm doing it! Doesn't cost anything to apply for a license.
Just tell them the commercials will be Canadian! :)
David Susilo 2009-09-02, 07:35 PM thank God for PVR. I can skip all the commercials!
Emerald_Boar 2009-09-02, 08:29 PM Thanks god for video editing software. I can delete the commericals and save available space.
Read ya l8r,

CBC radio has no commerical? Why can't CBC FM get a non-commerical radio channel from 88-91 Mhz?
Mixar69 2009-09-02, 11:56 PM "The Commercial Network"
Shaw has and owns one of these called "Eyes On TV" which airs info commercials 24/7. Endless 30 min episodes of H2O mop, Time life music collections, ab King Pro, etc.
Phil81 2009-09-03, 02:58 AM Just another reason to pay less attention to Canadian television.. even more so than I am now which is just a fraction.
Korak 2009-09-03, 08:29 AM This will make "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" more accurate!!!!
rfielder 2009-09-03, 08:42 AM I wonder if one of the biggest issues will be with BBC shows.
Already, shows like Top Gear are cut to pieces to fit into Canadian time slots, since the shows are longer than the broadcasters are willing to allow.
I have to echo the earlier sentiment - all this does is encourage downloading, most of which is blatant piracy. At least those shows are full length......but until someone can show hard numbers that downloading is impacting the revenue of large corporations, they just won't care.
Francois Caron 2009-09-03, 09:18 AM Top Gear is actually 59 minutes long. In order to show it uninterrupted with commercials, it would have to be broadcast in a 1 hr 15 min time slot at the very least.
And you still wouldn't get the original background music.
mclaugd1 2009-09-03, 02:28 PM I realize not everybody has a PVR, but those who do won't see much of a difference here. Besides as others have said, the channels will self-regulate as too many commercials on one channel will induce people to channel surf more often.
My wife and I barely watch live TV anymore.

So maybe they won't cut and extend it to 90 minutes. I think we'll see lots of changes.
FWIW, never watch commericials. All PVR all the time since the Bell 5100 came out!
smallmj 2009-09-03, 03:38 PM I think that they should couple this with a rule that makes editing for time illegal/prohibited. I hate missing content so they can make more room for ads.

That sort of thing could be a licence term from the producers. You want to show our programs, you leave them intact. Perhaps an anti-sim sub clause would help too.
classicsat 2009-09-03, 06:56 PM It won't help with syndicated programs. They are specifically cut to allow for more ad time.
RingtailedFox 2009-09-03, 08:12 PM the CRTC would then propose a law agaisnt anti-simsub clauses or simply ban programs that have that type of clause.
wgauci 2009-09-03, 08:27 PM So writing the CRTC to complain about Global and other channels running those commercials at the bottom of the screen while you're actually watching a show is obviously a waste of time eh?
It's bad enough you have to see promo's for every new show coming up while watching a show. But tonight while watching Big Bother, Global actually ran a promo on the bottom of the screen for Wendy's Asian Chicken!!
