stampeder 2009-08-23, 03:46 AM In its applications Rogers indicated that, in addition to CFMT-TV and CJMT-TV which already broadcast in digital, it plans to build DTV transmitters in Vancouver, London and Victoria by 2010 and in Edmonton and Calgary by 2011.http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2009/2009-504.htm In Broadcasting Public Notice 2007-53, the Commission determined that most television licensees will be authorized to broadcast only digital over-the-air signals after 31 August 2011. A condition of licence to that effect is set out in the appendices of this decision.
ppauper 2009-08-23, 03:51 PM I know those stations in london as omni-1 and -2.
Thanks for the update
Jase88 2009-08-24, 10:27 PM 2010 isn't that far off. Am I to assume that we could be getting digital CFMT channels in London anytime now?!
dbarron 2009-08-24, 11:24 PM They didn't make their previous deadlines, and the CRTC isn't going to hold them to a vague "indication" of a self-imposed deadline, so don't expect it to happen before the 2011 digital deadline. It would be great to have an additional digital station here in Vancouver, but I'm not holding my breath.
Wharfe 2009-08-24, 11:29 PM I wish.. I wish we'd get a Global or CTV digital first as I can't pick those up very well... OMNI 1 & 2 come in pretty clear .. nevertheless I'll take a digital channel no matter what it is!! Bring it on!
ppauper 2009-08-25, 02:26 PM I wish we'd get a Global or CTV digital first as I can't pick those up very well
you're expecting the reception to be better when it's digital ?
cm023 2009-08-25, 02:44 PM No matter how much I want more DTV here in London, I won't be holding my breath on this, Rogers just got a last ditch extension in Vancouver until 2011 and no applications have been filed for Transitional DTV transmitters regarding OMNI 1 or 2 here in London as of yet.
stampeder 2009-08-25, 02:49 PM In the CRTC link found in Post #1 there is this quote:And an application to extend the authority to begin the operation of CHNM-DT Vancouver (OMNI BC) and its transmitter in Victoria. The application to extend (delay) their DTV activation has been granted. More info on that is in Posts #1147 through 1150 in the following thread:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=107971
While Vancouver and Victoria have been given extensions, there is no mention of London having any delays before 2010 in OMNI's DTV activation there.
Wharfe 2009-08-25, 04:10 PM you're expecting the reception to be better when it's digital ?
Not necessarily but it may be a possibility. They come in OK now but slightly fuzzy where I am (in a building with an indoor antenna, and I think I'm on the wrong side) .. there's a chance that the digital signal might be decent enough to pick it up (or not)
99gecko 2009-08-25, 05:44 PM At least they are moving in the right direction.
That's great news! +2 DTV channels for London, Ontario, although they are already available broadcasting in analog.
Does anyone know if both the CFMT (OMNI1) and CJMT (OMNI2) new DTV transmitters will be broadcasting OTA in HD in London?
Is CFMT (OMNI1) & CJMT (OMNI2) broadcasting OTA in Toronto in SD or HD??
El Gran Chico 2009-09-02, 05:19 PM Yes, it's HD, although there's a lot of debate of whether it's downgraded at least for the Letterman show. Be warned about the state of their PSIP data
(http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=107431). :o
Thanks for confirming El Gran Chico!
Once the two OTA OMNI channels are converted to digital in London (from the Byron tower), they should also be broadcasting in HD. :)
London will be up to 3 OTA DTV channels soon.... since Rogers stated "by 2010", hopefully that means before Jan 2010. That's my interpretation anyways. We'll have to see what Rogers does WRT to cm023 comments.
Hopefully Global and CTV from Oil Springs/Sarnia, and CBC (CBLN, London) will also convert to OTA DTV HD within the next year or so.
cm023 2009-10-08, 07:14 PM Well the Rogers Application for CKVU-TV (CITY) and CITY-TV-3 Ottawa showed up on the CRTC site Today, so they can be crossed off the list.
So CKAL-TV, CKEM-TV, CKVU-TV-1, CJMT-TV-1 and CFMT-TV-1 are still up in the air, and maybe CITY-TV-3 Woodstock (serves London)
I assume if they had application's in the works for London they would of showed up today and knowing it takes a bit to get a DTV station on air, it's looking bleaker for any more DTV here in London from the Rogers stations, at least from their self imposed deadline of 2010.
I Looked for someplace to send a email to CITY of OMNI's to ask what's up but their sites are a pain to navigate.
ppauper 2009-10-09, 05:20 AM since Rogers stated "by 2010", hopefully that means before Jan 2010. That's my interpretation anyways.
in the worst case, it means the end of 2010
Emerald_Boar 2009-10-13, 07:06 PM yay +2dtv channels.
Are the OMNI transmittors moving to Woodstock (City tower) or are they gonna remain on the Byron tower?
We're already towards the end of May 2010, and it's getting close to 1 year since the first post, and still no news regarding OMNI 1&2 going digital in London?
Glad cm023 and I were not .. holding my breath on this
stampeder 2010-05-23, 02:05 PM All you can do is keep checking the CRTC website for decisions or upcoming proceedings that involve those stations.
Emerald_Boar 2010-05-26, 06:48 PM hmmm,
You can also randomily scan rf 47 (om1) & 48 (om2). If Omnis go DTV. That is the RF they been assigned. (After 2010 switch the RF will be 20 (om2) & 48(om1))
Also, if they do go DTV early and you read site regularly. You will know when omnis go digital.
Read ya l8r,
Al
I highly doubt the OMNI transmitters will move to Woodstock, as the Woodstock tower also serves Kitchener/Brantford. Kitchener/Brantford can already get the Toronto signals from the CN Tower. If anything, I'd expect Rogers to want to move CITY-TV-2 from Woodstock to the Byron tower. There would be a net gain in CITY's OTA coverage by moving to the Byron tower, as Kitchener/Brantford would still get the Toronto signal and the London signal might make it to Sarnia or Chatham.
I would speculate the original reason CITY-TV-2 was located at Woodstock may have been in order to protect WIHT (now WPXD, an ION affilate) Channel 31 at Ann Arbor, Michigan. WPXD remained on Channel 31 following the U.S. digital transition but is supposed to move to Channel 50 at some point, which would free up Channel 31 for use in London.
