: Globalive will be called Wind Wireless
Canada’s newest wireless entrant, formerly Globalive Wireless, today announced their new brand name, WIND mobile.
WIND is currently on target to launch in key markets in late 2009 and will continue to launch services across Canada in 2010. Service will operate on an all-IP HSPA network, which will pave the way to an LTE network in the future.
profets 2009-08-10, 05:14 PM thats quite a surprise.
i wonder if it has anything to do with the mobile carrier WIND in italy?

outinthornhill 2009-08-10, 08:34 PM That would be because it is the same company - or so Telus/Bell/Rogers will argue before the CRTC. It's a strange move by a company that remains under examination for exceeding the foreign ownership limit and argues that just because non-Canadians put up most of the money doesn't mean they have a say in how the company is operated. Now, to take the brand name the foreign owner uses in Europe, suggests more than an arms-length relationship. When Sir Richard Branson owned a share of Virgin Mobil Canada, the company was clearly majority controlled by BCE, which, of course, has now taken complete ownership. There is no such clarity with Globalive aka YAK aka Wind and the odds on Telus succeeding at the CRTC just improved.
profets 2009-08-11, 08:52 AM yeah, thats definitely a weird move considering the complaints of foreign ownership by bell/telus/rogers.
Can we get the European rates; including no charges for incoming calls/text ;)
Paolo 2009-08-11, 08:57 PM way to go, lets hope they have preferred roaming rates with italy... SOSOSO

At this point, better to have foreign ownership than a domestic oligopoly. I hope the incumbents choke on their arrogance.
...and +1 on the comment regarding better roaming rates in western Europe.

i agree. i could really care less whether its foreign ownership or not, especially with the way we're treated as consumers by the big 3. but we all know how much the CRTC seems to really care about consumers
Curmudgeon 2009-08-17, 02:04 PM I don't think GlobalLive is rebranding to Wind... Wind is just GlobalLive's Mobile brand - they also own Yak, One Connect, etc. (but I could be wrong).
Wind Mobile is suppose to be launching their new cell phone company in the fourth quarter this year.
Anyone have more details?

From their web site
WIND is jointly owned by Globalive Holdings of Toronto, Canada, and Weather Investments s.p.A., which is an affiliate of Cairo-based Orascom Telecom Holding.
