Just sharing my USB tethered iPhone's speed test, did not need to call Rogers to activate this feature.

I have separated this into a separate thread because I thought it might be of interest as time went on.

To further Rob11's comment.

Isn't that crappy upload / download and ping?

I thought Rogers hi-speed network was supposed to be much faster. I understand the whole hypothetical thing but that's pretty crappy. A 140ms ping is not great. You certainly couldn't do VoIP on that.

Amaky, is that a 3, 3G or 3G S iPhone?

Suburban Ottawa at 6:37pm. iPhone 3G. I called to enable tethering and I was told that my 6GB plan already had tethering enabled.

I'd recommend trying a couple of servers when doing your speed test to get best results.

Hugh,

Ping times are't that bad (for Cellular) ...you "could" do VOIP but it might have a "slight" delay.

Ping times will always be higher over RF then copper....

One bad thing with cellular internet is the cell towers are shared...so if the tower your testing with is busy and at peak talk times (say the afternoon drive home), your performance will suffer. Off peak, say 2 AM should produce better results.

Rogers brags about the quickest 3G network - on paper yes......but the more tethering going on with all these Iphones, the worst it will be.

Cheers

So Results so far

Name/phone /upload/download (speeds in Mbps)

Amaky 3G, 0.13, 2.03
Amaky 3G, 0.31, 0.77
Uberchuckie 3G, 0.32, 1.06

So I am confused because these numbers really stink. Isn't Rogers HSPA network supposed to be 3.6 Mbps for the 3G (and 7.2 for the 3G S?). Again I understand the fact that the 3.6 / 7.2 are theoretical blah blah blah but these numbers aren't even close.

I test a few days back with a 3G but didnt take a screenshot.

I was consistently getting a little over 3.0 Mbps download. Even tested downloading some big files from MS to see if the speed stays consistent. Also I could tell that there doesnt seem to be any throttling on this network ;)

also Hugh, just to note, I've used voip/sip applications on the phone itself over 3G and they always work great.

once i'm home from work i will.. lol

edit: just to reiterate what Paolo mentioned, i've seen the rocket sticks used in the golden horseshoe (since over a year ago) reach 5-6 Mbps speeds. in windows it shows even the device connected at 7.2mbps

Thanks guys. SpeedTest.net is nice because it provides a concrete real world measurement which is not clouded by hearsay.
