Yuprules 2010-02-22, 07:22 AM On last Friday, Engineering for VPT (33-1) has gotten back to me, they have resolved the 33-1 "16:9" problem for those of you who had squished pictures and in my case pushed over to the left problem.
Enjoy all those awesome 16:9 prime time programs! woo hoo!
For those of you who had problems with 33-1, report back if you still have problems (you shouldn't).
About Fox 44-1, yup I've totally lost it here zero bars. Used to have 4 out of 10.
44.1 is gone for me as of now.
33.1 is ok since last week end (was compressed in the center of the screen)
schoenbe 2010-02-22, 08:19 PM I am noticing major changes in signal strength on ABC (WVNY) and Fox (WFFF) tonight. Fox is down to 1 bar (out of 10). ABC is up at 10 bars. My Fox is usually rock solid at 10 while ABC varies between 4 and 8.
Do others have similar observations?
upchuck247 2010-02-22, 09:00 PM FOX 10 bars like before, ABC up to 6 bars from 2.
So, has anyone got the complete answer on what is going on with 44-1 and 22-1?
Down here, WVNY 22-1 (RF 13) effects my reception from WNYA 51-1 (RF 13) out of Albany....WVNY is not strong enough to lock the TV, but just strong enough to interfere with 51-1. The Mansfield towers are 180° out from the Albany towers, with me in the middle, so 22-1 is somewhat received from the back of the antennas, if I turn more south, it will reduce WVNY interference. Yesterday, 51-1 was gone, I even took the channel 13 only antenna down and cleaned and redid the balun connections...maybe it was just an increase in power on 22-1 for a while? But 51-1 is ok now.
There is also a similar, only reverse situation with WFFF 44-1 (RF 43) and WCWN 45-1 (RF 43) in Albany. But in this case, WCWN blocks WFFF. And a power increase on WFFF may have caused the change on WCWN from a 77% SS to a 52% SS as of late. It is often very frustrating.
I'm just curious what the end game was with yesterday's power changes up there if anyone knows.
Blackburst 2010-02-23, 02:32 PM As of this morning, WFFF-DT was back to normal for me. Working fine.
WVNY-DT was also back to normal. Which means I can't get a picture lock on it.
Does anybody know what the folks running WFFF & WVNY are doing?
What surprises me is that WVNY-DT was coming in great for the past two days. So, it does show that it is possible for them to improve the situation. Now, I only hope that the two transmitters (WFFF & WVNY) are not connected in some way in that it actually is the source of the problem causing either one or the other to come in weak.
As for the Albany station WNYA-DT, why is the FCC allowing stations to use channels so close to each other. If WNYA remaps to 51, then broadcast on 51, and get off of 13. The same with WFFF. They stick themselves in holes and then reception for viewers is effected all over the place.

I didn't check to see if ABC was any better for me (usually no lock at all), but did notice just this morning that WFFF would not lock for me, was at about 38% signal, first time I've had an issue with it.
downbeat 2010-02-23, 03:00 PM Recent fluctuations to WFFF and WVNY could be atmospheric in nature -- nothing to do with changing the stations changing their technical parameters.

mlaposta 2010-02-24, 02:20 PM So anyone have any idea what's up with WFFF?
I was at ~40% signal (no lock) yesterday, but today I'm getting nothing at all!
I'm usually at 75-80% signal, can tropo effect cause that much of a loss in signal strength?
Seems a bit odd.
hungt1999 2010-02-24, 03:34 PM it is snowing heavily now in the area, that could explain it.
Gordono911 2010-02-24, 03:58 PM I'm getting Fox at 40-50 % today, usualy comes in at 90-100%. ABC is normal at 40-60%. Both were off the air this AM and also last Saturday for about 45 minutes. Could be they are doing some work on transmitters...
yipikyer 2010-02-25, 10:50 AM Is it just good tropo or not i don't know, but since yesterday i'm getting ABC on an antenna that i never been able to get since 2005!!. The dedicated ch 13 antenna still works great, but getting it on my old vhf-uhf antenna without a booster, that's a first!!
Am i the only one?
schoenbe 2010-02-25, 01:16 PM Would be interesting to have tvlurker's comment. Could there have been a power increase on WVNY?

I don't get to Montreal much anymore, so I don't really have anything to add. There does not appear to be any activity on the regulatory front that I can see for WVNY.
Any change in their parameters would involve coordination between the FCC and Industry canada, so I think we would have lots of notice if something was afoot.
Perhaps CFCF or even CKTM reduced power temporarily for some reason?
stampeder 2010-02-25, 01:50 PM Could there have been a power increase on WVNY?You can learn more than you'll ever want to know about any U.S. TV station by entering its call sign here:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/audio/tvq.html
In this case you want to find WVNY's "Application List" to see all their requests/grantings/approvals/disapprovals since no TV station can arbitrarily make changes in their broadcast signals without approval.
mille 2010-02-25, 06:26 PM i have to say that since two weeks i'm often getting ABC 22 in the Laurentians, 20KM east of Ste-Adèle, and i was wondering too if CKTM 13 is broadcasting at a lower power, because for me, at around 80 KM of Montreal, CKTM was the one who's interferring with WVNY ...
If it's any coincidence, FOX WXXA in Albany was changing some mapping temporatily the last couple of days, there may be some network wide maintenance, or upgrade being done, just a guess.
WXXA is back to normal now.
schoenbe 2010-02-26, 07:04 AM With the weather clearing up (no precipitation, less cloudiness), ABC WVNY is coming in less strong than over the past couple of days (as reported by several people here). A phenomenon I have observed repeatedly in the past. Hope everybody's antennas stayed on the roof after last night's wind storm.
upchuck247 2010-02-26, 07:03 PM I lost WVNY for a good part of the week. It's back up to 4 bars now that the bad weather is gone.
