It's still unclear as to what the new owners will do with all the re-transmitters of CHCH-DT Hamilton.

Chanel Zero has said that they plan to build digital OTA in Toronto, London, and Ottawa.

Why point is that, by using the same channels as a nearby market does, interferance will occur and neither station will benefit.

That IS the point of protected contours. Montreal is officially in neither the Burlington nor the Ottawa market. While WCAX would prefer not to have interference to their signal in Montreal, they have no legal standing to protest any such interference. And when it comes down to it, their market is on Videotron, not OTA. (By the way, they are no longer on Cable VDN -- they carry the Boston commercial networks instead)

If other frequencies were available, I'm sure they would have taken them. Don't forget that Ottawa has 15 OTA stations. That's 30 allocations for analog and digital stations during the transition period.

I think it might go dark now that Canwest is disbanding "E" and the new owners of CHCH will turn it into a local-news station for Hamilton. It will have no use for Ottawa.

Local programming will primarily be during the day. They will also be showing prime-time, late-night and weekend matinee movies, which would be of interest to Ottawa. It is also helpful to say they cover most of Ontario when selling advertising. That is the primary reason why SunTV wanted Ottawa and London repeaters.

Chanel Zero has said that they plan to build digital OTA in Toronto, London, and Ottawa.

Where did you get confirmation of this? I saw a note in the application when talking about leases indicating this for Ottawa, but since they own the tower in London (and Muskoka) there was no mention of it. This is also the first I have heard of a Toronto repeater, unless you are talking about the primary signal in Hamilton which has already has a transitional DTV transmitter.

Channel Zero is taking over CHCH. CHCH has several repeaters throughout Ontario- thus it seems plausible that Zero would be able to have OTA transmission throughout the province.

Any reception outside the contours is 'gravy'

So I live in a pot of "gravy"...

anyway, no 44.x reception for me tonight (20h eastern time)

and I spent my last week of vacation on the shore of Champlain Lake.
I got a cheap 7" portable atsc/ntsc TV from Target and I can report 39.0 was on air with an analog feed and there was also other US analog channels available at cumberland bay state park (using only a simple bow tie antenna from radio-shack)

Well, in Prevost, I would say it's more like an eagle's nest....

Blackburst,

Same thing happened to me at my cottage 1 hr out of Montreal.

With my HIGHLY directional DIY 8-bay, pointed towards Mt-Mansfield, I lost all Mansfield stations, and could NOT block out CBOT (#25), CBOFT (#22), OMNI (#66), CKXXT (#20).

Also, by turning the antenna slightly towards the south-west, I was getting reception of WWNY (#7), WNYB (#26 - no idea?), WROC (#8 - no idea?), and WWTI (#21)!

Absolutely no reliability, nor predictblity with OTA at my location.

Does anybody know how the rearrangement of the transmitters on Montreal's candelabra tower, planned for this summer, is progressing? Any chance we may get a digital signal from up there before the end of the year?

WPTZ-DT 14 is now running ThisTV on it's 5.2 feed. I spotted it last night at around 11h30 pm. This morning it was back to their WeatherPlus service. I guess they must be only running ThisTV at certain hours of the day.

Well I checked WPTZ-DT 5.2 on Wednesday evening and ThisTV was not on. WeatherPlus was being shown.

well it might be testing it , apparently alot of nbc affiliates have it as a sub channel A number of NBC affiliates have added This TV as a replacement for the now-defunct NBC Weather Plus service http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_TV#This_TV_affiliates

You are correct. They where testing. I got a e-mail from WPTZ-DT 14 indicating that ThisTV will be on their 5.2 sub-channel effective Monday (Aug. 31, 2009)

Hopefully the program guide will be working or else we'll all have to go to the ThisTV website to see the program listings.

I will have to bug Tivo and ZAP2It for the TV listings.

I got some news about WGMU.

The St.Albans repeater should be ON-AIR today. I got an email from the station.

Update:

I checked at my location and I cannot get it, no signal at all.

I used it get fine before the other owners went bankrupt.

Maybe there are having technical difficulties. ;)
