Blackburst 2008-04-04, 12:19 PM Is something going on on Mt. Manfield. This morning all the channels coming from that point seemed low.
WPTZ-DT, WFFF-DT, WCAX-DT seemed to have a weaker signal on my TV
WETK-DT had no signal.
It can't be my antenna, because WCFE-DT was at it's regular signal strength, and it's coming from Lyon Mountain. And WNPI-DT was booming in like crazy this morning. It was actually my second strongest signal after WCFE-DT.
So, is there something going on on Mt. Mansfield, or is this atmospheric issues?
daMaster 2008-04-08, 12:50 PM When is CTV going to get their act together and start broadcasting digital???
stampeder 2008-04-08, 01:07 PM daMaster, here is the reception thread that includes the West Island:

We can discuss your CTV question right here in this thread.
Yuprules 2008-04-08, 09:25 PM Blackburst, oh yeah...up until last night the signal for NBC (WPTZ) and CBS (WCAX) was so low it was barely watchable. Although of note, there was MASSIVE FOG over the weekend in the mountains with all the snow melting, it could had been that.
The signal strength seems to have returned to normal last night and tonight.
hommegrenouille 2008-04-15, 12:47 PM Anyone know what WVNY's plans are for 22.2? It's just a test pattern now. I emailed the station and suggested they start carrying the Retro Television Network like many other US stations have done with their subchannels. Who knows, maybe they'll listen if they get enough requests. Anything but another weather channel!
mille 2008-04-21, 10:13 AM I wonder if the american channels will come better when they will broadcast at full power after the transition in feb. 2009 ?
tvlurker 2008-04-22, 12:32 PM I wonder if the american channels will come better when they will broadcast at full power after the transition in feb. 2009 ?
The American channels are already at full power, except for Fox.
The only thing that will change next year is WCAX moving from 53 to 22. Fox should also be at their proper power, too.
The next change will come in 2011 when the 17 and 35 convert to digital only -- this may reduce overloading on the tuner front end which will make PBS 32 easier to receive.

mille 2008-04-22, 01:00 PM I had an e-mail from a guy in engineering at WCFE-DT may be three weeks ago, and he said that they are transmitting at 50 KW, and waiting from canadian autorities to broadcast at 100 KW...
Anyway, i don't catch 38.1, so it won't be any help.
On the other hand, the transition of channels 10, 12, 17 and 35 from analog to digital will certainly help...
Those high powered channels cause interferences on many VHF-High and UHF channels when your living near Mt-Royal, like me.
tvlurker 2008-04-22, 01:27 PM I had an e-mail from a guy in engineering at WCFE-DT may be three weeks ago, and he said that they are transmitting at 50 KW, and waiting from Canadian authorities to broadcast at 100 KW...
i'm sorry, you're right about WCFE. I was thinking of the Mount Mansfield stations.
WCFE's original DT license application was for 100kW. They had to change their pattern for 57 so that it could share an antenna with digital 38. I presume the antenna has to protect TVO on ch 38 in Kingston, ON. In any case, 100kW is less than 12 dB down from their analog power, and so constitutes an invalid increase in power for a digital transition licence. I'm sure there are some mitigating factors because of the pattern change.
In any case, the change in pattern is the cause of WCFE no longer being easily receivable in Ottawa.

Blackburst 2008-04-23, 12:17 AM Interesting about WCFE-DT 38 not being at full power. Currently I get it at about 88% signal strength. Hope it goes to full power by February 2009 for all those folks having problems receiving the channel.
WNPI-DT 23 from Norwood, NY seems to be coming in every night now. I guess due to the change in weather.
Not bad, I get 3 PBS stations. And with the sub-channels, that comes out to 10 different PBS feeds. But still no WVNY-DT.
mille 2008-04-23, 09:39 AM TQS employees are meeting at 10 AM with the new direction:
no news bulletin at noon....posssibility that they get rid of all the regional stations....
Yuprules 2008-04-23, 02:27 PM milee, you were dead on:
New TQS owners closing news division and laying off 270 people: union

Hope this doesn't affect their hdtv shows!
mille 2008-04-23, 02:49 PM TQS still have to submit there plan to the creditors, and to the CRTC, they have to ask a change of conditions of there licence....no more news this fall !
I don't have great expectation for the survival of the network...
mr_raider 2008-04-24, 07:07 PM Anyobody not getting audio on WFFF-DT (44.1)? I have no audi since 18:30 today. Audio is fine on 44.2 (CWTV), so I suspect it's a problem on their side.
Look at this http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Hearings/2008/n2008-5.htm#1
The first one is TQS change of owner ship and there change of condition to get rid of the new's. (The plan will be made public may 22).
But look at the second one:
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC),to acquire the assets of the television programming undertakings CKSH-TV Sherbrooke, CKTM-TV Trois-Rivières and CKTV-TV Saguenay and its transmitter CKTV-TV-1 St-Fulgence, Quebec from TQS Inc.
and
The CBC did not propose any tangible benefits package because it considers that the investments made to improve the transmission chain and to convert the transmitters to digital will fully exceed the amount required in accordance with the Commission’s tangible benefits policy.
RonXYZ 2008-04-25, 04:34 PM http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Notices/2008/pb2008-36.htm#2
Today Quebecor requested to amend the licence of CKXT-DT Ottawa by changing the channel of its transmitter from 62C to 20C. I wonder what the effect to CBMT-DT in western Quebec will be when CBC move to full power on Mount Royal on ch 20.
tarantino 2008-04-25, 05:02 PM It's probably because TQS and CBC/Radio-Canada are sharing some facilities in those cities.
I don't know for all of them, but in Trois-Rivières, the studio and transmission tower belongs or used to belongs to Cogeco and is used both for Radio-Canada and TQS. Now that TQS is changing ownership, there is probably some concerns about these facilities to finalize.
WatchmaN 2008-04-28, 09:06 PM I have a very bad reception tonight am I the only one?
tvlurker 2008-04-29, 06:19 AM . I wonder what the effect to CBMT-DT in western Quebec will be when CBC move to full power on Mount Royal on ch 20.
Not much. If you look at the contours provided with the application, the signal doesn't make it much east of Ottawa. The interference for CBMT, if any, will be much less than Global CIII-TV-6 provides with 50 kW on channel 6.
It's a valid concern, though. AFAIK, the original application by CBMT-DT to move to 20 was predicated on TVO not using full power on digital channel 20.
In general, though, you will find that most digital stations will have the minimum parameters to shoehorn their signals in, in order to 'just' cover their analog grade b contours, and no more. Gone are the days when every station just applied for (and got) the maximum parameters on their frequency.
Gordono911 2008-04-29, 07:49 AM My reception was normal even with all that rain last night.
