Rogers also requests authority to cease operation of its analog transmitter CHNM-TV-1 Victoria upon commencement of digital transmission on channel 29, which Rogers expects to occur two months from Commission approval.

This is the first application I have seen for the early shutdown of an analog transmitter. It will be interesting to see what the CRTC says.

Wow, back in post 1037 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=1053689&postcount=1037) it was just a wild guess that something like that could even happen, but seems Rogers really has some interesting plans.
Maybe they will start with CHNM in Victoria, and test how that works for them, so if it works for them, will procede with same scenario in Vancouver and Salt Spring Island (maybe even then move that transmitter to Courtney to replace the burned one; btw was that Courtney tower ever fixed by now?)

it was just a wild guess that something like that could even happenGood call - you'd better open a fortune teller tent! :D If Rogers is doing this partly as a self-training exercise in flash cuts it would serve them well across the country. Most of the big players are outsourcing the transmitter changeover work, but I would imagine Rogers would do it in-house.

This is technical, but is 1647watts going to be enough power to serve the market? Does that replicate the current analog coverage?

CHNM's Victoria analogue repeater was only just strong enough to fill in the signal shadow area that the Vancouver (Mt. Seymour) signal could not cover. For just the metro area of Victoria 1647w should be fine on digital.

Several posts about CBC reception in Bellingham are now in this thread:

I think something has definitely happened to CBC 58 / 2.1s signal. I have always received a strong signal ( 95-100% )from CBC with a CM 4221 in the attic but in the last month I completely lost the signal till I repositioned the CM 4221 and now the best I get is 68-70% with many dropouts.

Has anyone tried to call CBC Vancouver about the poor DTV signal on Channel 58? Their public contact numbers are available here.

There's a general switchboard number, plus another number for TV administration.

Canwest has applied to the CRTC for a post-transitional transmitter for CHAN:

Thanks for that, argilo.

I'm really glad to see that Global wants to remain on UHF channel 22 and not occupy VHF-HI Channel 8:The licensee is proposing a different channel than the one allotted in Department of Industry’s (the Department) allotment plan for the transition to digital television (DTV) given than the maximum ERP designated by the Department’s plan would result in reduced contour coverage when compared to the existing analog B contour.Sensible move, and I hope the authorities approve.

Now if CKVU will kindly not use VHF-HI Channel 10 we will have that band wide open and get a better chance at KCTS 9 and KSTW 11 from SeaTac. KCPQ 13 is already strong up here for many people.

Does anyone think Global will need to put up a low-power relay of CHAN-DT at Victoria to make up for potential coverage difficulties there?

I have a feeling they'll just let their analogue repeaters across the Island run and run until they eventually die off, one by one.

If I lived in Victoria, I would raise a stink at each and every one of these PT applications in Vancouver saying that reception will be unreliable, and unless a local transmitter is added, they should loose priority carriage and simusub rights.

The CRTC has approved CIVT's application to continue using Channel 32 with a max ERP of 33 kW @ 740 metres.

For the hell of it i re-scanned this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see KBTC-DT 28.1 & 28.2 come in nice and strong. Did they activate a repeater in Northern Wash or am i just getting a nice odd tropo ?

That KBTC repeater station is called K24IC-D and is described here:

We'll keep discussion of it in that thread. :)

RE Post #1167

A lot of us (in the further, fringe areas) are having problems with CBUT-DT. It has dropped from being the strongest Seymour signal for me to being the second worst (only better than the candle CIVT-DT) in the past couple months. However, we have a member (jasonbyers) from CBC here that states that nothing is wrong at the moment, so I guess we just have to accept that CBUT-DT now just has a poor signal. For whatever as yet unexplained reason. See this thread for more info:

It has dropped from being the strongest Seymour signal for me to being the second worst (only better than the candle CIVT-DT) in the past couple months. I have noticed the same thing, but presumed that the degradation occurred due to the foliage growing on trees through the Spring. Are there others who have clear line of site (no tress) experiencing the same issue?

As a comparison, I'm 11km from Mt. Seymour with LOS and the CBUT-DT signal has always been stable, but since you are on the fringes in either direction it would seem to me that the foliage guess has some merit, as well as atmospheric conditions. This being an El Nino year the air has been extremely moist over the Island, the Lower Mainland, and up the Fraser Valley.

This is the first time the signal has dropped out while I have been watching the world cup...This mornings game was fine, but now the signal is dropping every few minutes..
