: OTA Station Status: Vancouver, Victoria (Closed - use 2011)
JesseBlue 2010-05-02, 07:12 PM For me it is the one that is the most difficult to get and it often fades in and out from mild freezes to out right nothing then for no reason it will return a few hours later. Mornings are the worst and the evenings it returns fine, on and off during the day sadley it is my night time only station.
try aiming it differently...i just reaimed mine so much (like 60-90deg counterclockwise) from my norm of 319 and i get a better signal for all of them...
Vostok 2010-05-07, 08:10 PM Is it just me or is the video on channel 32-1 black and only audio can be heard?
jadair 2010-05-08, 01:39 PM I have been having a hard time with 32.1 HD the last couple of days as well.
Try 33.1, 34.1 or 35.1, for some reason I sometimes get CTV on these channels with my cheap RCA Rabbit Ears antenna when I don't get 32.1.
stampeder 2010-05-08, 02:09 PM Personally I have rarely seen CIVT-DT's PSIP channel remapping at fault other than at times when they've been working on their system.
jadair, if you ever see CIVT-DT remapping to any other number than 32-1 on your home system please post here immediately with what number you are seeing so we can try to confirm. What kind of ATSC device are you using?
Pesky 2010-05-10, 11:36 AM I noticed that in the morning, CBC (2.1) was breaking up really bad, then it seemed ok in the afternoon. I was watching the hockey game, and it was perfect except for a couple of minutes, with about 4 mins in the game remaining.
Then at 10:30 pm. I tuned into 32.1 and found that to be breaking up a lot/
The other channels in these cases were all ok.
Is this the norm with OTA? - ie., every week or so, a signal breaks up for a non weather related reason (I haven't had any drop outs during the wind storms though, so my signal is really strong).
I thought Shaw would get their local feeds OTA, but someone at work didn't have the hockey dropouts that I did.
Where do they get their feed from? Satallite from Chigago?
stampeder 2010-05-10, 01:53 PM Pesky, CBC and CTV are on different towers with different technical features, so if you are finding that both of them are flakey it is generally a sign that you are facing some local reception issues. Part of PoCo is in a signal-shadow area from Mt. Seymour too.
Pesky, can you please post your TVFool report (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=362703&postcount=10) in this thread BC - Burnaby, New West, Coquitlam, PoCo, Port Moody (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=41173) (For those looking for Pesky's info his details are in Post #329).
Alex1978 2010-05-10, 02:36 PM Pesky,
ATSC receivers are not created equal. I saw really bad breakup on CIVT this morning on one of my receivers and none at all on two others -- and this was at the same time using the same antenna. Odd thing was, the receiver that was breaking up was showing high enough signal strength that it should have had a lock, and one of the receivers that had a good lock and wasn't breaking up was going through an extra 1x4 splitter.
My receiver that was breaking up was a Samsung LN40B550. The solid receivers were a Zinwell ZAT-970A (via a second splitter), and a Hauppage WinTV-HVR-1250 PCI card. Irony is that I usually have the best luck with the Samsung receiver.
Usually CIVT is rock-solid on all of my receivers, but I saw something going on this morning too.
CBUT-DT has been a problem for me for me since about the time CKVU signed on. I used to be able to get it all the time, now I can barely get it at all on any of my receivers. I had to watch the hockey game in SD on CBUT analog :( . Everything else from Mt. Seymour is perfect -- including CKVU-DT which is broadcasting from the same tower at a lower ERP . I have noticed that on the rare occasions when I am able to get CBUT-DT that they aren't displaying dynamic PSIP any more. I also noticed times when CBUT analog and CBUT-DT weren't a simulcast of eachother too.
I think something is going on with CBUT. My TV fool report says that CBUT-DT should be my strongest signal from Vancouver and CHAN-DT should be my weakest. I have a 100% lock on CHAN-DT almost all the time, and most of the time I can't get CBUT-DT at all.
My problem with CBUT could be that I'm in the USA and they're broadcasting on channel 58. Channel 52-69 were reallocated for wireless in the USA in 2009, so my problem could be interference from wireless. If that's what it is I should be able to get CBUT again when they move to channel 43 in 2011.
stampeder 2010-05-10, 02:41 PM Hmmm... maybe the warmer weather is causing some issues.
Alex1978, check out the "Straight Effect" posts (#209-213) in here: BC - Victoria, The Island, Sunshine Coast, BC Interior, BC North - OTA (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=68445)
Does that look familiar to you or is it a different type of signal loss?
danbcman 2010-05-10, 03:00 PM Yesterday and today cbc dt 58.1 has been flakey and it is usually for me a very reliable station. Ctv 33.1 has been flakey too but that is the one that is that way often. And as the other post stated for me it is not weather conditions, it seems to have no rytheme other than early mornings or late nights like when stations use to power down transmitters for lower levels wierd.
blakew 2010-05-10, 04:41 PM I had breakups during the dying minutes of the hockey game too. I flipped it over to 209 on the Shaw HD box expecting it to be the same, but no dice... rock solid. I guess they get their CBUT-DT feed via fiber or sat?
Pesky 2010-05-10, 07:55 PM I did post the results from TVFool where you asked (or a link to them).
Since the breakup in the hockey game was experienced in other Lower Mainland areas, it's safe to say CBC had a problem.
Now it would be nice to know exactly what that was...

It was definitely a problem with our equipment at Mt. Seymour. Re-brander was crapping out.
Shaw and Telus were unaffected as they get a feed direct from CBC broadcast centre downtown.
stampeder 2010-05-11, 01:56 PM Thanks Jason! Is it fixed, or will there be any delays?
Pesky, is CIVT-DT still breaking up for you?
Pesky 2010-05-11, 06:14 PM It seemed fine yesterday. Must have been a glitch with CTV's equipment too.
Thanks for the update Jason, good to know it was something traceable.
danbcman 2010-05-19, 02:19 PM may be related to cbc dt I spoke to CBC engineering this morning in regards to the program data being gone. The encoder has broken down and they are aware of it and will replace it soon he said it was causing pixelations and signal corruptions and they noticed it mid march near the time change.

I was wrong 35.1 is the same as 12.1, KVOS.
Whenever I can't get 32.1 I try 33.1 or 34.1, 33.1 seems to be the most consistant for me.
My TV is at home and my internet is at work so I cannot post when recieving.
I am using a cheap ($37.00) Radio Shack rabbit ears, I will try to remember to bring in make and model next week.

levibluewa 2010-05-27, 10:39 PM Any rumors floating around about 17s digital / hd conversion?
stampeder 2010-05-28, 09:26 AM There hasn't been much info out there so far regarding /A\ Channel's Victoria and Vancouver transmitters. CTV is apparently still trying to figure out what to do with their "B Team" of stations. I sure wish they'd get it done.
