Copy the CRTC &/or Industry Canada too? And to whom at CTV do I email?

So your suggestion is to sacrifice a Victoria station so a Vancouver one can have more power. I only get two US stations at the moment. The only hope I have for a Canadian station is if one opens up in Victoria. Thanks.

Actually they'd be free to use 33.1 for A Channel Victoria if and when they ever decide to take it digital. :)

but Victoria is closer to where PAX is broadcasting from, so CIVI-DT (33.1) might have to lower their ERP even more... how low can it go? ;)

When the US digital switchover takes place in a few months won't any power restrictions on Channel 33 be eliminated as there would no longer be an analogue station on that channel?

Yes that is correct, so hopefully CTV will crank it up right after! I just hate that we have to wait... ;)

Not really, KWPX will remain on ch 33 after 2009.

Yes, that's correct gi32tgilkg, the only way it would work would be if both KPWX and CIVT did flash cutovers at the same time. I don't foresee that happening here in Canada.

Given that CTV would most likely not shut down their analogue transmitter on 32 at the same time as the analogue 33 shutdown of KPWX, it would be in CTV's best interests to cut over CIVT-DT to 23.1 asap and go to a much higher ERP rather than have to do a big song and dance routine in the future. Just get it done, CTV!

Is anybody else experiencing major signal fluctuations on cbc and global? On my receiver they range 100% to about 20% on both channels and have been jumping since last night.

that issue since the Olympics. Both CBC and Global....27-68.

This is a relatively new problem for me just happened in the last 15 hours or so

It must be weather-related as all 3 DT stations are presently operating as usual from readings at my location.

There was a layer of dusty air over the lower mainland today so there might have been some sort of effect.

Ya I found the cam while looking at a good location to relocate as this place is the wrong side and is too low.

Also I noticed CTV analog dropped off a few mins ago and so did my digital too just for it was back shortly.

If you got a place in New West or South Burnaby with either a due east or due west balcony way up high in a high rise you could put antennas up for Mt. Seymour and SeaTac! :)

I was thinking a corner unit on the South East or North East as the SeaTac is a hope only for the South East facing side.

I sent the following regarding the flashover from channel 33 to 23. Should it also be sent to Industry Canada and/or the CRTC?Hello

I live in North Langley and have previously expressed my discontent at the low ERP CIVT is using for its ATSC transmission on channel 33. It is extremely rare that I’m able to get a coherent signal lock and despite my extreme fondness for CTV programming, the ease with which I can receive CHAN’s ATSC signal is changing my viewing patterns. Until recently I thought this was unfortunate but inevitable until September 2011. Thankfully, CTV recently acquired CIVI locally and its A Channel assets, locally including the allotment of channel 23 for A Channel CIVI’s future ATSC use. Given that there is no indication that A Channel is planning to activate its ATSC transmission on channel 23 in the near future, I propose that CIVT flash over its ATSC transmission from channel 33 to channel 23 in the interim, and greatly increase the ERP to improve signal reception in its target coverage area. Not only would it improve viewership and ease of reception immediately, it would be a drawing feature for CIVT’s high-definition coverage of the 2010 Olympics. After local viewers have grown used to easily watching the Olympics and sporting events in high definition on CBC’s local CBUT, it would be most unfortunate that a network and station so committed to excellence would voluntarily have a fraction of the audience available for such a high profile event and the high definition coverage from the flagship local station. The benefits of a flashover to channel 23 from 33 should greatly outweigh the inconvenience of the transition to both the station and the viewing public, and it is my sincere hope that this change be accomplished at your earliest convenience so that my household can return to your quality programming.

Thank you for your time,

That was well put lordhelmet, and boy I sure hope they take us seriously! Here's what I sent after I wrote Post #809:
Subject: Digital Channel Change For Higher ERP Please

Hello,

I am the moderator of the online Digital Home web site's Over The Air forum and I'm also a loyal viewer of CIVT-DT on channel 33.1, which makes me a bit of a rarity in the Lower Mainland due to the woefully low Maximum ERP of your station.

For the past few years I've been explaining the situation CTV faced in regards to U.S. station KPWX, with its analogue station on channel 33 and its digital on 32.1, and I understand completely the challenges that your Industry Canada-assigned channel has left you with. Having said all that, I recently postulated online that due to station ownership changes CTV now finds itself the "owner" of the digital channel allocation initially reserved for A Channel Victoria, namely channel 23.

Given that CTVGlobemedia now owns the A Channel stations, this means that the Channel 23 DTV slot left open for a digital A Channel station in Victoria now belongs to CTV too.

I don't know about any upcoming plans to activate it, so if it will be available I think a sensible move is for CTV to apply for a flash cut of CIVT-DT to 23.1 from 33.1 on Mt. Seymour at a much higher ERP.

There is no adjacent channel limitation with ATSC as there was with NTSC, so there would be no harm in having Global on 22.2 and CTV on 23.1 from the same location. Also there is no other Channel 23 being used in the area that might cause a conflict.

Please give my channel reallocation idea some serious thought and effort. It is a terrible pity to see CIVT-DT at such a miserably low ERP.

I also invite CTV Vancouver broadcasting technicians to join their counterparts from CBC Vancouver and Global Vancouver who are already members of OTA Forum discussions at:

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=81

CTV staff would be most welcome!

Best Regards,
