: OTA Station Status: Vancouver, Victoria (Closed - use 2011)
stampeder 2008-03-24, 09:22 PM I've been checking about 2 or 3 times a day. If anyone sees a signal please post a photo here if you can, even if the screen is black but a lock is made. If you have a signal strength meter that would be an even better photo.
blakew 2008-03-25, 03:28 PM I thought I was the eager beaver checking once a day. ^^^ ;) good stuff
danbcman 2008-03-25, 05:51 PM Hi:

bad news that about another 200 scans I may end up doing just incase:o
Cooter 2008-04-01, 10:09 PM Hey everyone,
Any idea on what the assigned frequency for global will be? I've integrated my OTA antenna into Vista Media Centre and it requires an assigned frequency on top of the 22.1. CBC's assigned freq was 58, CTVs was 33. Any help would be great.
sputnik 2008-04-01, 10:40 PM CHAN-DT (AKA: Global) will be broadcasting on physical channel 22.
Put in 22 in your media center for the channel number.
It is not known at this point what CHAN-DT 22 UHF will use at its virtual channel label. They could label it 22.1 or 8.1 or any other unused number they choose. Since their analog channel is on 8 my hunch is that it will be labeled as 8.1.
There is no need to worry about the virtual channel number when programming in the channel. Once the signal is recieved on the physical channel the the TV or tuner card will program itself with what ever virtual channel number (AKA label) they deside to use.
Cooter 2008-04-01, 11:23 PM Thanks Sputnik. Unfortunately Vista Media Centre requires a virtual channel number in order to add the channel. I'll just wait until its live and figure things out then.
danbcman 2008-04-02, 12:13 PM Take a chance add both variation:D
Cooter 2008-04-02, 03:30 PM Good call.
Man, the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) on the media centre was already through the roof. Now seamlessly integrating HD into it for FREE (another huge WAF bonus) using a coat hanger and some coax cable... geez, I might even get some lovin' out of this.
blakew 2008-04-03, 02:21 AM There's a show on KCTS 9 this friday at 7:30pm about the digital switchover in the states.
Now it may seem weird, but this afternoon, I was getting activity on 22.1. Not enough to get a lock, but the signal strength was fluctuating between 10-18/100. Currently reads as 0 (with no change in antenna direction). The time was 8pm.
levibluewa 2008-04-03, 01:08 PM RE: CIVTs 9-volt battery power. I wrote a "complaint" (email) to the CRTC regarding the low signal on 32.1 and received a telephone call in response. The guy basically said that the FCC / CRTC agreement prohibits CTV from increasing their power because they'd interfere with PAX 33 in Seattle -- GAG! Also, got the feeling that broadcasters consider us OTA people Neanderthal's sucking profits from their operation. Kinda-like, why don't y'all get cable and shut up! He was very nice, polite and knowledgable, but didn't tell me what I wanted to hear!
levibluewa 2008-04-03, 01:08 PM here in Bham for 8 DT. Ran a scan and its still 0 for new digital channels.
Any of you know if CIVI 17, Victoria, has any digital plans? What about CHEK 6?
Thanks guys, I'll go run another check :)
I don't have any high hopes for CHEK or CIVI.
I think that the reason may be that these are stations with main transmitters locater around Victoria (unless is automatically gives then wide-area cable rights anyways). Building digital transmitters for Victoria alone may not be financially viable. The problem is that, in order for those to reach Vancouver market, those would need to boost power level to high, which may not be an option due to US proximity.
I was thinking that same reason may be behind CKVU's quest to relocate their current transmitter from Golf Islands to Vancouver. That tower would have to operate at full power in order even to reach Vancouver, and that may not be an option now due to US proximity.
I doubt CIVI will go digital soon, simply because, we would first need to see a A-channel station in Ontario go digital, before CIVI does it here (plus the transmitter factor).
danbcman 2008-04-03, 06:12 PM Rogers Broadcasting Limited to acquire the assets of ethnic Channel M
along with its digital and related transmitters in Victoria
From the reading I have done over the last while this may change the equation and for CKVU an iteresting thing is they have no over lap of signal in the states as no one has asked or been asigned that DTV 47 signal so high power may be no issue
stampeder 2008-04-03, 10:39 PM I've made that connection before about CIVT-DT taking over CITY's channel 47 assignment and then cranking up the juice. I sure hope they do it!

I doubt CTV would ever even think about it.
Why would they care if they already consider digital OTA viewers negligible. Putting even a cent into anything like that would have zero return in profits, as far as they are concerned, I think, and that's all that matters.
I think the only way to change this is to complain to CRTC to restrict their cable simsub rights to North Vancouver, based on their current actual effective signal coverage. This is the only way they would get (seriously) concerned. It would, in fact, almost cut in half their current HD ratings/viewership (and profits) in the area.
stampeder 2008-04-04, 02:32 AM Hitting them in the pocketbook sure would wake them up! ;)
danbcman 2008-04-04, 01:11 PM I have to get anolog while scanning OTA DTV on my samsung tv and so I am aware of the anolog stations to some degree and the thing is I used to get a real snowy fade in fade out weak reception on this station and a couple of days after ownership change it is just a tiny little snowy which means its about 4x's the better reception ?

When Global applied to the CRTC two years ago for their final extension on the buildout of their transitional TV license for Toronto, they cited as one of the mitigating factors the fact that at that time neither BBM nor Neilson counted HD viewership in their ratings.
If that is still the case, then there is no monetary penalty to CTV if their simsub or OTA coverage area changes.

danbcman 2008-04-04, 01:59 PM I know if everyone dropped cable and satilite then OTA would be a real concern thats not going to happen... so the only way to get it across is to inform, show and educate the masses that there is a better and purer and free access to DTV. Facts like anual cost per year for other services verses one time setup costs, direct accountability to local feed back from local viewers and more I am sure my limited experiances can't draw apon. I know it is a tough one, but exposure is whats really needed to the masses. And real people with the same desire to improve OTA working from within the various levels of gov and bla bla comitees. :p
solarwind 2008-04-04, 02:21 PM Just took a look at Channel 66 now and sure enough it's much improved. Before it was mess of static and a barely discernible b/w image under there somewhere. Now it's a bit snowy and in colour now.. quite watchable!
Was going to add too that three days ago I had finally taken the plunge.. picked up the phone and called Shaw to cancel my basic cable that I've had for years. The CSR asked at the end if I was going to be watching any hockey and I said "here and there..", anticipating what was coming. Then the question of how I'd be watching with no cable. I told him over the air and he seemed a bit surprised. I added.. "and in beautiful hi def" and he chuckled at that and muttered "haha, too funny" like he didn't believe it. I could only think.. well joke's on you, my friend! :p
Signal still coming in today, but once it's gone, I'm 100% OTA.
