Dan,

Have you quized any of the CTV engineers (604-608-2868) recently regarding a power increase or migrating to another channel.

Put my Spectrum Analyzer on Channel 43 (644-650 Mhz)
Nothing there.
There is however a strong Digital Carrier on Channel 54
(710-716 Mhz) Your ATSC receiver will not pick it up though. It's been there for at least two months now.

I would say that's case closed on the 43.1 issue then, Greg :) Thanks for that.

Dan, if it comes back I'd say you have a very local oddity happening.

I'm really wondering about the channel 54 digital carrier still being there since nothing is listed.

Did a re-scan of OTA signals a couple of days ago--Sony HDTV. In a previous scan (6 months ago, or so) the scan picked up 35.121 (KVOS), 58.1 (CBUT) and 33.2 and 32.1 (CIVT). I understand the CIVT signal not being picked up...readings of 27-35 maxing at 54. But the scan picks up 2.1 and 12.1 -- previously it also locked on 35.121 and 58.1. I don't understand the "re-mapping" subject. Is the signal / carrier wave whatever that CBUT, KVOS is sending out somehow different than it was a few months ago when the tuner hit on 35.121 and 58.1????

Does this make any sense? Let me know :)

levibluewa, have a look at the Knowledge Base & FAQ for one of the posts that explains remapping:

If you go to the diagnostics menu of your TV you'll see the real frequencies are the ones you talked of (33, 35 and 58). They're remapped to 32.1, 12.1, and 2.1 respectively. Makes it easier to recognise the channel as their analog channels are more familiar to the public. We certainly don't know of KVOS-DT 35, but we do know of KVOS-TV 12.

Hello all, (long time reader, first time poster)

I apologize if this is old news. I just thought I'd mention that I was chatting with one of the technical people at Global a few weeks back. I asked him when they were going to get their OTA HD transmitter running. He mentioned that it should all be going up onto the tower in October, and going live shortly after that. Signal strength is supposed to be between CTV and CBC (though closer to CBC's level of strength than CTV, apparently).

Thanks for that, Booch - the last we'd heard was in Post #281.

According to the Industry Canada database, Global's CHAN-DT will broadcast on Channel 22 at an ERP of 4.3 kilowatts. This beats CTV HD's .319 kilowatts hands down but will likely cause reception problems for some folks in the Lower Mainland, and it definitely doesn't match CBC HD's 15.6 kilowatt output.

Watching a movie last Sunday on ch. 10. When I went to CKVUs web site it was listed as HDTV? I didn't know 10 had a digital HD signal.

Also, have noticed ads on 26 CBC-French indicating HD programming. Is there such a thing or is it advertising coming from somewhere else thru 26 as an affiliate?

Thanks,

Bruce in Bellingham

This is a case of the networks posting the best of their abilities. However they fail to disclose that it's only available in HD OTA in the GTA, or via HD satellite. I saw that too, I forget the name of the movie, but the website said it was in HDTV, I promptly saw that as an opportunity to email City-Vancouver and ask about their Digital OTA progression. And a gentle reminder of the analog cut-off date too;)

Only CityTV Toronto broadcasts in HD, not citytv Vancouver, so anything marked 'HD' is only ment to appear on local Toronto citytv website and channel, otherwise it is a mistake.
Also CBC French does broadcast in HD, but only locally in Toronto and Montreal. The local French CBC affiliate/station in Vancouver does not. Any promo marked 'HD' is only ment for areas 'where available'.
Channels 10 and 26 can't have digital signal, they are only analogue, there future digitals will be at different channels.

As for citytv's (CKVU) digital progression, I don't think there is any for now.
A few months ago I contacted them and finally spoke to someone in eng who told me they are not even working on it nor have any plans for it, suggested for more info to contact their corporate office that is in charge for making those kind of decissions (supposed to be decided in Toronto). I did that but there was no response on the issue from anyone in CHUM HQ. My assumption is that nobody is even thinking about it right now with all the ownership issues, maybe it will be considered by new owners (Rogers or what?) once the situation stabilizes, but personally I would not think there is going to be any on-air changes atleast year or two from now.

I think it depends on your tuners capabilities. On my Sony Bravia, I don't get the program guide, but do get current program info. At my parents place on their Samsung set-top box, they get a program guide that's off by 3 hours, and get current program info.

The 3 hour time difference in CTV HD's PSIP data is likely due to the system being run remotely out of Toronto. Irritating...
