Official Press Release courtesy of james99: http://www.makeitseven.ca/downloads/May%205%20release%20FINAL.pdf
According to a media release, the Blackberry billionaire's offer of $212.5 million (US) for the team is conditional on the franchise relocating to Southern Ontario.
"The current team ownership asked that I table an offer to purchase the Coyotes and significant discussions resulted in an offer that is in the best interests of the franchise, the NHL, and the great hockey fans of Canada and Southern Ontario," Balsillie said in the release.
The release also says, Balsillie agreed to post debtor-in-possession financing of $17 million (US) at the request of the Coyotes franchise. The money will keep the franchise going before the sale is completed.
If Balsillie is successful in bringing the Coyotes to Canada it would mean that the franchise has come nearly full circle after the team was forced to relocate to the desert from Winnipeg in 1996.
Jim Balsillie WILL NOT Go Away in the NHL until he gets a team and relocate it to Ontario
Wayne Gretzky and his team Coming to Hamilton, I'll buy season tickets ASAP!!
GO HAMILTON COYOTES GO!!
james99 2009-05-05, 08:24 PM I'm tired of buying season tickets for this team. I'm not sure if his rights to Copps has expired.

Balsillie's agreement with the city for long-term rights to Copps Coliseum formally expired when his company did not own a team by Dec. 31 2008.
james99 2009-05-05, 08:31 PM I guess the phones will be ringing tomorrow. I'm surprised he hasn't tried to buy the Habs. He was the one who broke that news months ago and he's a Habs fan.
“I am excited to move closer to bringing an NHL franchise to what I believe is one of the best un-served hockey markets in the world — Southern Ontario. A market with devoted hockey fans, a rich hockey history, a growing and diversified economy and a population of more than seven million people.” Big understatement.
Musashii 2009-05-05, 09:04 PM Sources tell TSN that the NHL is not happy with what is perceived by the league as a powerplay by Balsillie and will wrestle with this matter in court.
Those proceedings are expected to begin on Thursday.
After learning of the purchase on Tuesday, the NHL's deputy commissioner Bill Daly released the following statement:
"We have just become aware of today's Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club's constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League's 29 other Member Clubs."
The Arizona Republic reported that the Coyotes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. Coyotes' CEO Jerry Moyes stated that they have done everything they can to try and keep the team in Arizona

Musashii 2009-05-05, 09:17 PM Prior to a final decision being reached on the proposed sale, he called for Canadian fans who want to see a seventh NHL franchise in Canada to make their voices heard.
Good quote Mr. Jim Balsillie
james99 2009-05-05, 09:19 PM moved the team to Burlington:
Don't tell me we have to add Burlington to the list of southern Ontario cities interested in landing an NHL franchise.
During a recent charity luncheon, Burlington Mayor Cam Jackson was heard to say his city is pursuing a major sports franchise and that he had talked to Jim Balsillie, the BlackBerry billionaire who tried to move the Nashville Predators NHL team to Hamilton in 2007. (http://www.thespec.com/article/559678)
Musashii 2009-05-05, 09:27 PM Where in the heck is an NHL team going to play in Burlington? Central Arena? lol Mainway/Appleby/Wave Sports Arena? lmao ... Just stick to Copps Coliseum and renovate that arena.
stampeder 2009-05-05, 09:30 PM The "Brantford 99s" would have been cool! :D
Burlington makes sense due to the highway access from all directions. They could play in Copps for a couple of years and build their own arena, which is lucrative if Balsillie owns it all.
I just can't shake the feeling that Bettman is mumbling curses like "over my dead body" and other malicious, evil epithets towards Balsillie. Bettman seems driven to keep him out.
james99 2009-05-05, 09:49 PM Bettman is anti-Hamilton ever since it hosted the NHLPA tournament during one of those strikes.
NB Josh 2009-05-05, 09:49 PM I guess the phones will be ringing tomorrow. I'm surprised he hasn't tried to buy the Habs. He was the one who broke that news months ago and he's a Habs fan.
That surprised me too. I bet the NHL was hoping he would too, because they wouldn't have to worry about him trying to move the team.
Can you even imagine what US TV will do when a team in a small Ontario city becomes successful, and makes the Stanley Cup Finals or something? What would they call them? Almost nobody in the US knows where Hamilton, or Burlington, or Kitchener/Waterloo is. I remember when they had Live 8 in Barrie, they called it "Ontario" everywhere else because most wouldn't know where Barrie is.
james99 2009-05-05, 09:54 PM The NHL took control of the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday evening, removing owner Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority and seems set to challenge the very notion that the troubled NHL franchise is bankrupt. (http://www.thestar.com/sports/article/629536)
james99 2009-05-05, 10:42 PM All of that was in the press release listed above. hehe. (post 6)

Balsillie faces tough legal battle
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/2009/05/balsillie_faces_tough_legal_ba.html
travisc 2009-05-06, 12:31 AM I personally doubt Balsillie is gonna win this one, but he'll get a team eventually. Sooner or later the other owners will get tired of throwing good money after bad, and will instruct Bettman to stop trying to keep Balsillie out. The league is propping up the Coyotes now, what happens when Atlanta, Tampa Bay and the Islanders are in the same boat? Come on down, Jim!
Bettman has to be the dumbest commish in the major sports. Or, at least he would be if hockey was still a "major" sport, and not a niche product that he has cultivated with his mismanagement.
Let me get this straight: Florida gets two NHL teams, but the biggest hockey hotbed in the world also is limited to two?! There's an owner with deep pockets willing to throw a franchise a lifeline, and he's turning up his nose at it?
There's dumb. There's stupid. There's moronic. And then there's Bettman.
Walter Dnes 2009-05-06, 02:16 AM The only team that might possibly be moved to Hamilton is Buffalo. This isn't just a technical matter of territorial rights. A team in Hamilton will erode the Sabres fan base in the Niagara area, and doom the Sabres. Southern Ontario is OK. I could see K-W or London. The only worry is to not get too far south, and step into Detroit territory.
If Bettman had ANY brains whatsoever, he would give Balsillie an all-clear to move the Coyotes to either Quebec or Winnipeg (fitting irony). I don't understand why the other owners support Bettman. It's THEIR money that the Bettman is pouring into Phoenix.
Maybe Bettman is smarter than he looks. By obstructing the move, he might get Phoenix to fold entirely. Allow Phoenix and another team to fold this summer, and the NHL will be more viable with 4 divisions of 7 teams each. Remember when MLB (baseball) wanted to go for "contraction", i.e. get rid of 2 franchises? The players association and the fans went nuts, and the plan was cancelled.
Getting rid of 2 teams would result in relegation to the minors, if not outright unemployment, for a couple of dozen marginal "4th line" players currently in the NHL, and the reduced demand for players would push player salaries down generally. The NHLPA would go on strike if Bettman ever tried "contraction", but he might be able to sneak it in by allowing a couple of teams to declare bankruptcy. The result would be to reverse the dilution of talent caused by years of expansion.
mickk 2009-05-06, 07:48 AM Bettman is anti-Hamilton ever since it hosted the NHLPA tournament during one of those strikes.
he not anti-Hamilton i would go as far as saying anti-canadian as far as his messed up business model goes because he will never put another team in canada as long as he is in power. its common sense put a team anywhere in canada because I know it will sell out every night. put another team in the USA and its 50/50.
i love this guy because he is fighting gary bettmen on this because Gary now has no choice but to give him the team now that they filed chapter 11. no one else will put up a better bid for this team. it either give him the team or Gary is going to continue to be stubborn and let the NHL finance the team till some other guy comes along and with this economy the NHL will own the team for a very long time.
james99 2009-05-06, 07:58 AM According to todays Hamilton Spectator there is a second ownership team that is currently working on bringing a team to Hamilton. No names were mentioned.
