otherleft 2009-05-07, 04:44 PM I agree. I believe more fans want to see regional matchups like Philly/Pittsburgh, NYR/NYI/NJD. More rivalries, more intensity. Phoenix seems way out there and worthy of a move. It hasn't helped that the team has been terrible since inception.
i hate tv: We should focus less on his height an more on his obsession with Ron McLean's hands.
james99 2009-05-07, 08:04 PM Today’s Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy hearing lasted less than two hours before breaking over a central question – who owns the team? (http://thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/561889)
james99 2009-05-07, 08:06 PM Moving to Hamilton is the only hope the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes have of surviving, according to court documents filed by the team. (http://thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/561686)

Let's get real. Hamilton is a city in trouble financially. Its main industry is dying (steel). Does anyone really believe that the city could support an NHL team in the long run?
james99 2009-05-07, 08:22 PM Hamilton is doing fine and could easily sell enough season tickets to fill the building within a few days (just like the last 2 times).
I'd love to see the Coyotes move to Hamilton. The market base seems a no brainer. However, ideally, I'd like the league to fold teams in Phoenix, Nashville and maybe Florida. Twenty - eight is a nice number as it can be divided into 4 divisions. The players could be dispersed to improve many teams, including my disappointing Flames.:(
I don't share the opinions about Bettman, though. He often makes interviewers look under educated and naive. There are a myriad of jokes about lawyers and Bettman is an accomplished one. Balsillie is no white knight.
Hamilton Coyotes doesn't roll off the tongue very well.
james99 2009-05-08, 12:05 PM Hamilton Blackberries.
my two cents. Balsillie will never be awarded a franchise or allowed into the NHL. He tried to take on a tight knit old boys club and he lost.
If Hamilton ever gets an NHL franchise, which I hope they do, it will be without Balsillie
reddwarf 2009-05-08, 01:02 PM IMO, Balsillie will eventually get what he wants. There are too many teams in financial trouble and not enough people with the big bucks to buy them and run them successfully. It's a pretty big black eye folding up to four teams. Plus there are too many teams draining from the pot. If I was an owner in a successful market I'd be welcoming Balsillie with open arms. The NHL has an embarrassing record of pathetic and criminal owners who haven't had the dough to make things work.
If Phoenix fails for Balsillie, there's Tampa, Atlanta and possibly Nashville to go after. The Count has only so many tricks up his short sleeves.
jvincent 2009-05-08, 01:08 PM I too think that Balsillie will eventually get the franchise.
The number of billionaires who want to own expensive hockey toys is pretty small these days and the NHL can't afford to turn them away for much longer.

NB Josh 2009-05-08, 02:35 PM Why not Hamilton Jets, bring back the old name.
arminia 2009-05-08, 02:54 PM The villain of the piece, according to most of the governors surveyed, is not Balsillie but his Toronto lawyer, Richard Rodier. He has developed a high profile as the BlackBerry tycoon's advocate and legal strategist.
Several governors have said they told Balsillie he would find it much easier to deal with the NHL if he severed his ties with Rodier. But it was Rodier who was here yesterday at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court representing Balsillie.

Now THAT is funny! Would love to see the mascot...

The old name was Hamilton Tigers (from the 1920s).

I have to think that having a pit-pull for a lawyer is a good thing in big business...

Exactly!
That's why the commish doesn't want to deal with him...
NB Josh 2009-05-08, 08:52 PM The old name was Hamilton Tigers (from the 1920s).
I meant the old franchise name from Winnipeg. Hamilton Tigers probably wouldn't work because it would be too easily confused with the Tiger-Cats by the average person who doesn't follow sports closely.
stampeder 2009-05-09, 11:33 AM Hamilton Thrashers, if we are to believe this plan from another group to move the Atlanta franchise north for the second time in NHL history:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=106539
Hamiltonians must be feeling like the belle of the ball with all this interest! ;) My worry is that some of these groups seem to want to use the Copps as just a stepping stone to a move elsewhere. The group interested in moving the Atlanta Thrashers has declared that they would move to the Copps once and for all.
