I would like to know when Rogers is going to release the PVR's to rentals to public instead of purchasing it.

I just wish we some idea when we were gonna be able to get one.

I think in this case, the "no news is good news" rule does not apply.

The fact that we haven't heard anything leads me to think there are "supply problems" that will delay delivery for some time...maybe a few months.

I will not buy the unit. If I was forced to buy I think would go with standalone unit. I realise there are some features that would be lost but I can accept that.

For now I'll sit patiently, hoping to hear something real soon.

Here's a snip from an article I saved from the Toronto Star when Rogers' first announced the PVR:

Purdy said the set-top box will sell for $599, less a $100 programming credit. It will be sold through major electronics retailers, such as Future Shop, Radio Shack and also through Rogers Video stores.

The device will be available for monthly rentals beginning in mid-2004.

I was hoping the "mid-2004" was just a safe estimate on their part. Who knows? Maybe it'll turn out to be right?!

I would have purchased the 8000 a couple of months ago if Rogers would allow me to return the STB I currently rent. But in buying the box, I'd have plunked down $600 to buy a box, pay $1.99 for the right to use the box I bought, and also continue to have to rent the one I have because it's included in VIP Ultimate Digital + Movies. There just seems something very wrong about having to pay rental for a box that's sitting in your closet. It's almost as much a principle issue as cost.

Having said that, if the rental isn't soon available, I know I'm going to cave!

Sure do agree with you about principle, Salinger.

As long as Rogers can sell the 8000s why rent them to customers and tie up capital! Eventually Rogers will realise that not everyone wants to (or can afford to!) purchase a first generation box which may well become obsolete. I'm sitting on the fence!

The remark about the VIP package is a point Maverick should address.
You should be able to have an 8000HD instead of the included 3100 SD and just pay the extra $6 monthly (as in 3250HD) or whatever the extra for PVR rental becomes!

On an associated topic, I wonder where Future Shop got all the (obsolete) SA3100s they're selling for the great (!!!?) $599 less programming credit?
Could they be returns off-rental ex Rogers!

I completely agree that it should be easier and you should be able to upgrade from the VIP package to a HD for the diffrence in rental pricing ($6 plus tax), why has this not taken place? well most likely because the marketing and other groups can't get there heads out of their .. well who really knows, like most big companies, we dont get a decent explanation at my level. wish we did.

Then again I am not sure how complicated or expensive it is to modify the product/billing program called SGI to allow for the changes, since changes to this software seems to take a long time as they need to make sure it wont screw everything up as there are millions of customers with varying product levels, including old products from Maclean Hunter, Shaw and who knows who else. since we cant just place them on a similar Rogers package, this causes complications I would imagine.

We received an email a couple of weeks ago that most of the non used 3100's that where in our stores and warehouses where be regrouped and shipped to 3rd parties like Future Shop and others. Is this because a new terminal is coming out as some have suggested, I really hope so but have not heard of this being the case.

I have been pushing and will continue to push for more information as our customers deserve it and we/I deserveit to better deal with our customers as these types of questions do not affect our advantage over the competition as the products/services are already being used on both sides.

Before I found this place yesterday, I sent Rogers CS an email regarding the availability of the 8000 PVR for purchase and rental. They sent me back an email stating that they had no plans to support the 8000  .

I sent them back the link on the Rogers site where you can buy the 8000, and asked them how it would affect VIP users, etc etc.

I really really want to use the 8000, but I may be moving before the year is out so buying isn't an option.

Now that the 3250 is shipping today, maybe the 8000 will be next?
