: TVOntario & TFO DTV Transition Status (closed)
someguy23475 2011-08-18, 10:15 PM The Windsor transmitter is still acting up. DTV Pal still says Audio Only, but the RCA TV is now mapping to 32-1.
Still in 4:3 mode, clock still wrong, no ID, etc.
Probably in a day or so it will be fixed. Windsor was the last to convert, and probably the last to have the bugs fixed.
PPL4GOLF 2011-08-18, 10:15 PM Wow!
The quality is great on TVO 19.1, great signal also.
No PSIP data at all on my Samsung B550 LCD, not even channel name...as of the posting time.
I also had to rescan to get the digital channel as 19 just too me to the emptied analog RF19.
OTANUT 2011-08-18, 10:26 PM Hey someguy,,,,micah tweeted TVO and they said that a lightning strike took out something that is needed to get the 1080i feed to London, Chatham and Windsor. They said it would be repaired "ASAP"
I can't wait to see TVO in HD!
tvlurker 2011-08-18, 10:37 PM Maybe that's why we get a good signal with no audio or video in Ottawa today?
Phil81 2011-08-19, 03:39 AM The Windsor transmitter is still acting up. DTV Pal still says Audio Only, but the RCA TV is now mapping to 32-1.
Another look late tonight has 32-1 mapping properly on every tuner here now, but TVO 33-1 Chatham still has those audio only problems on some tuners.
Turns out (after discovering this on other boards) some stream data from 62-1 WWJ Detroit was used for much of the day here for CICO 32-1! That explains why one tuner here mapped it to 62-1 WWJ-HD. Trip said on another board that TVO's signal had a LOT wrong with it.
Hope everything can be finalized by late on today to be inline with Toronto's TVO station.
jgconnor 2011-08-19, 07:42 AM Uh oh. I just lost TVO. Perhaps some post=transition maintenance?
jgconnor 2011-08-19, 07:44 AM And it's back. Glitch?
Marbles_00 2011-08-19, 09:20 AM I wrote about the loss to in the Toronto/Hamilton Station Status thread.
On my main Samsung TV, the signal started at a SNR of 8dB, 0 bar indication, then came back at 17-18dB, 2/10 bars, by the time leaving for work it was around 22-23dB, bar indication 5/10.
What also concerns me is that when it was at 22-23dB, I flicked over to CBC and it was around 29dB and the bar indication was 8/10.
How is it that a 38kW signal is penetrating better than a 100kW signal? How much of a concern is this going to be after the transition when a majority of the TO signals will be roughly 100kW (save CFTO)? I really hope it is what people here are indicating and it isn't transmitting at full power yet. That would help explain what happened.
obe67 2011-08-19, 10:19 AM Congrats to TVO, signal is perfect, channel and program information spot on...
Now that is is how you do a transition to digital. CHCH have not bothered to put their program info on.. .I guess they figure who cares.

At my location, I am 32 miles from the CN Tower and I can see the tower from my roof.
TVO 19-1 is stronger than CBLT by about 3 dB.
TVO 19-1 is 28 dB (8 bars).
TVO 28-1 is 24 db (4 bars).
Antenna is facing Buffalo.
petrelh 2011-08-19, 10:25 AM Well, I have zero CHCH after the switch and it must be my location and small antenna, because although I DO get some reception of the TVO channel, 19.1 since the change-over, it is not watchable--at least not right now.
I'm hoping they up the signal a bit over the course of the day or that I can get it at night since it has been one of my mainstay channels.
Brightonian 2011-08-19, 10:29 AM I believe CBLT is and has been using full power.
The REC query which seems to be up to date is getting its info from industry Canada.
It shows CBLT-DT authorized for 106.9KW. There is nothing showing for 38KW.

Besides there should be nothing limiting them on their frequency at this time and it is hard to imagine an even stronger signal than their current flame thrower.
jgconnor 2011-08-19, 10:37 AM Brightonian, I hope not. CBC has been relatively unreliable (frequent dropouts) for me since July and was solid all winter. I had hoped that the changes in ERP for TVO would have improved things, but that's not what I'm seeing.
As long as CBC analogue on RF5 is still on, I'm assuming that they remain at testing power on RF20.
gizmo3141 2011-08-19, 11:59 AM TVO is breaking up for me here in East scarborough. Funny because it was 100% until midnight last night, then the signal suddenly dropped and varies between 5% and 100%.
Antenna hasn't moved, and all other channels work, even the notorious CTV...
Any Ideas?
:o
Marbles_00 2011-08-19, 12:31 PM Basically the same as Stampeder's list. Authorized for 106kW, Operating at 38kW and Post Transition is 99.6kW.
TVO is authorized for max 106kW, and their Post Transition is 106kW. The list doesn't indicate what they are operating at...which ponders the question, are they at full power yet?
arc23 2011-08-19, 12:38 PM I was wondering if TVO is broadcasting this movie Saturday night as nod to there transition:
08-20-2011
22:00 - Videodrome 19 CICA, ends 23:27 Horror (starts in 1 day) A programmer at a TV station that specializes in adult entertainment searches for the producers of a dangerous and bizarre broadcast. Rating: 2.5/4

I don't have any inside information but I can only imagine that things at the CN Tower, and to a much lesser extent, First Canadian Place, are very fluid right now. It's entirely possible that the "pluming" for RF channels 19, 20 and 25 (the plan is for them to share a combiner) is a work in progress, and might be right up until the end of the month.
If this is true, it's entirely possible that what you see on RF 19 or 20 today (e.g.: possibly reduced power, service disruptions) is not indicative of what you'll see in a couple of weeks. The same holds true for any other station using a combiner. In the GTA, that means every station other than CTV RF 9, CTV two RF 10, and CHCH RF 11.
And while all this site streamlining is going on at the CN Tower, many stations have yet to decommission their analogue operations. The whole process is probably more intricate than we think.
The migration to DTV gives facilities such as the CN Tower an opportunity to overcome some limitations from a few decades ago. I can't wait to read your reception reports here after all the rework is done, and the troposphere is less active. It should be impressive.
gizmo3141 2011-08-19, 12:44 PM Yes, that would be cool. If it's working. Sudden signal strength drop here in East Scarborough...hard to get right now...
majortom 2011-08-19, 12:57 PM Not to derail the coverage & transition discussions, but sumthin else i noticed
while pokin around with the TsReader exports from TVO.

Scott_AA 2011-08-19, 01:05 PM Is anyone seeing PSIP info on TVO channel 32? Also, my TV is showing that they have the time slow by 20 hours -- it's GMT minus 1 day.
