: TVOntario & TFO DTV Transition Status (closed)
cm023 2011-08-05, 01:56 AM OTA is correct; we will all be sleeping during the changeover. Wake up and do a scan that morning.
Not all of us, I will be coming home from work roughly half a hour after the shutoff. It's not like I watched TVO at 2am anyway.
roger1818 2011-08-05, 07:57 AM JamesK, I never said it wouldn't be from 1am to 6am! My question is will it really be what we call August 16/18th or will it really be August 17/19th. octopod's analogy to fiscal vs calendar year is a good one. I agree that it is most likely going to be as we are all assuming, but there is a chance it could be 24 hours later than that.
El Gran Chico 2011-08-05, 09:46 AM Rather the speculating about this, do the old fashioned thing and phone them directly if you don't believe me. They are nice, professional people who will give you a straight answer.
They have no wish to confuse people. Trust me, if all goes well late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, you will see TVO digital Tuesday morning at 6:00am.
octopod 2011-08-05, 11:22 AM or we could just wait, with all the time we have been waiting for the homestretch an extra day don't kill me (I hope), just like when CHCH didn't go when expected I just thought ok well it will and wasn't that big of a deal
roger1818 2011-08-05, 11:23 AM If you go back to my original post it was a question to see if anyone on the forum knew the answer and then it grew into something bigger. Since no one here knows I will call.
CamDAB 2011-08-05, 12:11 PM CHCH didn't go when expected
Different issue.
Left hand didn't know what the right hand had in mind. :-)
This is discussed in the CHCH transition thread.
Looking forward to adding TVO digital to the DTV channels here.

roger1818 2011-08-05, 02:17 PM Does anyone know if TVO's transition dates are broadcast or calendar dates? I believe the broadcast day typically runs from 6am till 6am instead of midnight to midnight. If broadcast dates, the transition would actually happen on the mornings of the 17th and 19th (depending on the location).
Sorry about the confusion this question caused. I called TVO (as El Gran Chico suggested) and after talking to the engineering department, they confirmed that they are using calendar dates (not broadcast dates) so when we wake up on the 16th (or 18th depending where you live) TVO will be broadcasting digitally OTA.
mr weather 2011-08-05, 05:59 PM It'll be interesting to see if I can get digital TVO out of Kitchener. I can already get 28 analog with a pretty decent picture.
ScaryBob 2011-08-05, 06:06 PM I wouldn't be surprised if the digital signal was on the air well before 6am in order to conduct tests. It might not be the regular schedule but test patterns can be useful for TV calibration.
octopod 2011-08-15, 11:09 AM Just wondering where you saw that the transmitters are in different locations? Is there a list with where they have moved to?
stampeder 2011-08-15, 11:29 AM A link to list of those from TVO would be nice.
octopod another way that you can find the exact location of any TV broadcast tower is to see Industry Canada's database:
http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations/
If TVO has moved any of them it would show up in the Latitude/Longitude values for each of the stations or repeaters.
octopod 2011-08-15, 11:47 AM if i have done that correctly in google maps than the chatham tower has moved a fairly extreme amount from barely out of the city, to way out by the lake. Around a 30km drive. As far as I know there was no pre existing tower in that area at least not any tv signals.

Which makes me wonder how TVO is managing to convert to digital so cheaply compared to lets say CBC, if they are putting up new towers, or signing new leases with someone for use of a tower?
PS anywhere where I may be able to find a predicted contour map for the new locations?
tvlurker 2011-08-15, 01:52 PM I think the CBC is including the operational cost of running the new transmitter over its useful life.
I bet TVO is only reporting what it cost to actually replace the transmitter.
Also, to be fair, many of the CBC's transmitters were on VHF-Low, so entire new transmission plant would be required to switch to VHF-Hi or UHF for digital.
Unlike private broadcasters in Lloydminster, Thunder Bay, and the Gaspe, the CBC has correctly determined that VHF-Low is no place to be broadcasting digital with a hope of being received reliably by most viewers in the coverage area. (As opposed to creating a large enough fictional coverage area that covers the required cable head-ends to force priority carriage on cable systems, along with the accompanying simsub rights)
ota_canuck 2011-08-15, 05:29 PM I currently get TVO on 28RF and 19RF. The 28RF is a bit snowy at times, so I don't know if it will be available in DTV after the flashcut tomorrow morning, but 19RF has always been a flamethrower in this area. I'm sure 19RF will be 100% DTV in this area on Thursday morning.
Another concern I have is that a very strong TVO 19RF may mess up my CBC 20RF. [adj-channel] In September CBC and TVO will both be flamethrowers.

Not a problem, since both CBC and TVO will be broadcasting from the same physical antenna on the CN Tower, and their powers will be well within 10dB of each other.
Marbles_00 2011-08-15, 06:06 PM The best way to compare is WIVB and WKBW at 38 and 39 respectively. Now admittedly one isn't on top of the other on the same tower, but you have to view the signals from the ATSC tuner perspective.

Not that I'm aware of. The TVFOOL results still show Adj/Co channel warnings for some post transition overlaps, etc.

Only if the two adjacent channels are not co-located, and the receiver is much closer to one than the other.
In this case, we're talking about two stations whose relative power levels to each other will be the same no matter how close or far away the receiver is.
wilspin 2011-08-15, 08:49 PM It is odd that 2 channels in the same town are adjacent. Look at previous assignment in the old days, Buffalo 2, 4, 7, Rochester 8, 10, 13, Toronto 5, 9, 11 (Yes its Hamilton). Nicely spaced Eh? Now Buffalo is 33,38,39, kinda lost the old way of doing it.
