How do I disable Norton Antivirus? I need to reinstall some software after an unsuccsessful first install.

With NIS, you can right click it in the toolbar and temporarily disable.

As stated above, it should work, however, if it doesn't you may need to go into msconfig (start, select run, then type in msconfig, then enter, go to startup) and deselect all the norton/symantec options, then reboot, this way it won't load after you reboot. Then after installing your software, go back and select it again, and reboot.

That is the worst case scenario.

The only problems I've come across with symantec products were when uninstalling. You should be able to simply right click the icon and disable it for awhile, if not, then go the msconfig route.

I ran into that problem a few years ago when I got a Dell as a dedicated PVR. Here's the drill in point form...

You can't remove NAV while it's still running
You can shut it down by clicking on a related icon in the sustray, and shutting down from the icon's menu.
But the "as shipped" config does not have the control icon in systray. Thanks guys
The following is going to sound backwards, but it worked for me
Click on the NAV icon on the desktop, or start NAV from the programs list (yes, I KNOW that NAV is already partially running).
This will add a new NAV icon to your systray. Click on the new NAV icon.
From the icon's menu, select the option to shut down NAV
Now that NAV is FULLY shut down, you can remove it via "add/remove programs" in the control panel, just like any regular app.

You have no idea how much I time I wasted finding this on Google. With the exception of the PVR PC, I run linux at home, so I usually FDISK from a linux install CD and reformat. Getting rid NAV, without wiping off Windows is a bit more of a challenge.
