: Bell TV 6131 Discussion thread
JKR1963 2009-08-31, 02:46 PM I am looking around for a hard drive to use with my 6131 and am considering a Seagate (Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB 3.5" External Hard Drive - Silver).
I had been looking at the WD Mybooks 1TB.......but the Best Buy Canada site has several reviews that say the drive was unreliable. Also, the WD has only a 1yr warranty.
This Seagate has a 5yr warranty and is on sale at Staples for $139 (Future Shop has it for $169). There is one review of this drive on the Future Shop website by a customer that used this Seagate with a 6131 and he says it works great. I am thinking of buying this Seagate drive but am slightly concerned that it has a sleep mode after 15min (the EHD feature is not supposed to work with a HD that has a sleep mode).......it is supposed to reactivate quickly when needed though.
Is anyone else using this Seagate drive successfully with the 6131?
Any helpful comments would be appreciated.
profgilbo 2009-08-31, 09:05 PM We just hooked up an EHD to our 6131. Is it possible to watch one channel while recording live tv on another?
kovalev 2009-08-31, 09:19 PM hi !
I have seen a few post about 750Gb or 1Tb drive.
On the Bell web site they still say, between 40 and 750Gb.
Some poeple said a 1Tb worked ?? can anyone confirmed.
Looking to buy a new EHD, would like confirmation first !
thanks'
kovalev 2009-08-31, 09:23 PM Sorry but you can't...
But
You can watch recorded stuff on your PVR, while you are recording a live program.
Blackloz 2009-08-31, 10:35 PM I use a 1T.B. on my 9242 so I see no reason at all why it won't work on 6131. It works like a charm for me, im actually going to get a 1.5 T.B. drive soon.
daMaster 2009-09-01, 11:29 AM Wondering the same: whether a 1TB will work with the 6131.
Thanks
ScaryBob 2009-09-01, 12:45 PM Anyone found either discrete on/off IR codes for the 6131 or a macro that accomplishes the same?
Press SAT on the 6131 remote until the lights flash. Press POWER. Then press VOL UP to turn the receiver on or VOL DOWN to turn the receiver off. Harmony remotes should be able to learn the codes.

Perfect, thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. How did you figure that out?
batmancollector 2009-09-01, 08:37 PM Pausing, rewind, forward, the picture goes black and samsung lcd tv displays "searching for signal" while in HDMI mode?
What the heck is that all about?
Switching back to live tv,seamless no problem.
Any comments? I'm using SD not HD.
Thanks

Pinza 2009-09-01, 09:38 PM What happens with HD.?
What if you use Component connections.?
batmancollector 2009-09-02, 05:10 PM Yep,that did it,works like a charm... too bad,hdmi cable had a really nice picture. :)
Pinza 2009-09-02, 05:13 PM Glad to hear it works again.
In reality there should be no difference between HDMI & Component, so I would check to see that you are outputting at 720p.
If the receiver is within warranty, call Bell, get it replaced.
brill 2009-09-04, 12:00 AM Hi,
New here just purchased a 6131. When I turn the receiver off I get some type of info screen or the option to "press select to watch tv". How do I just turn the receiver off without this junk appearing. Yes I can turn the TV off but one would think off on the remote means....off.
thanks,
brill

This is normal. Bell receivers don't ever shut off or even go to standby. They simply go into "screen saver" mode with the logo/info screen.
jumpy27 2009-09-04, 07:10 AM The screen saver mode is a good idea because it lets you know that your TV is still on. I wish all providers had this feature built into their receivers. I had one customer who left his TV on 24 hours a day for just over a year and burnt out the lamp prematurely. He thought that his Shaw remote was programmed to turn the TV and digital box off at the same time--but it wasn't. He was elderly and had purchased the TV years after buying the box and didn't know that the remote had to be reprogrammed for his new TV. If Shaw had a screen saver mode with their digital boxes the customer would have noticed that the TV was still on and found some other way to turn it off.
Pinza 2009-09-04, 07:39 AM As has already been said, this feature is now present on all new receivers. It is also designed to assist people who cannot work out which of the many inputs on the TV, is actually being used by the Bell TV box.
Only way I know that you can stop this 'screen saver' is to disconnect the receiver from the hydro.
brill 2009-09-04, 10:19 AM Thanks for the replies. Disappointed that the "screen saver" mode cannot be shut off, personally I find it annoying and a cheesy way for Bell to push their lousy programming. Oh well.

redgrandam 2009-09-06, 05:33 PM Hey everyone. Anyone have any suggestions for this EHD problem? i know there have been many listed in this thread, but none that I've seen thus far the same as this.
I got a 1TB Simpledrive by SimpleTech (Fabrik), I plug it in, and it asks if I want to format and reboot, I go yes, and it formats it, and reboots. Upon rebooting there is no PVR functionality. If I unplug the drive and replug it back in, it asks if I want to reboot to use the drive. After that, same thing, it does nothing, but it writes to it and recognizes it. I've used an old extra drive in an enclosure that works well, but just for testing as it is too small of a drive. I put the drive (the simpletech one) on my PC to just mess up the formatting so I could get the receiver to reformat it again, but I'm having the same problems now.
Any suggestions from here aside from returning it?
Thanks
JKR1963 2009-09-07, 05:52 PM the Seagate FreeAgent 1TB works perfectly with my 6131.....I first used the Seagate software to adjust the power setting to "Always On" and turned off the White Lights too.
I did not know if these settings would be retained when the Seagate was reformated by the 6131.......they were.......the drive is always on....works just like my 9200.
JKR1963 2009-09-07, 05:58 PM now 135 hr HD and 1000 hr SD....I have the Seagate on top of my rack in the open air........if I feel it, it is vibrating slightly at all times......and slightly warm, it is silent in operation so far. I am not worried that it is always on as it has a 5 yr warranty. This unit is on sale at FS any is $125 in the flyer that came out yesterday.
Making the 6131 into a PVR has also made the program guide the 9 day version like my 9200..........pre PVR guide was like the 6100 (44hrs?).
