How much real money? LOL

A $.00001 piece of black electrical tape easily fixes issues like that :) Most of my electronic devices are "modified" that way. I simply make a small hole in it so the indicator is still visible, but not annoying.

I put a small piece of post-it over bright LEDs. On black equipment, that can be prettied up by covering it with a piece of black electrical tape that has a hole punched in the middle. Just what gives with these new LEDs anyway? They are more like flashlights than indicators.

Their Christmas Lights!

TBH the light doesn't bother us though xD

Yersterday I tried to hook an older external hard drive to the USB port on my HD 6131 receiver to use the PVR function. Unfortunately this one was apparently not recognise as I got absolutely no message indicating the drive was discovered, not even an warning/error message, no tv image flickering, ... no nothing.

As this is an older external drive I decided not to mess with it as it might not be 7200rpm. I then went to get a 1TB Comstar with a "Hitachi inside" from F.S.

Unfortunately I experience the same "nothing" situation with it.

I actually followed the instruction from the Bell page;

1. Buy an external hard drive..
2. Plug the drive into the USB port on your HD receiver.
2.1.Plug in the hard drive power source and connect the USB cable into the USB port on your HD receiver
2.2 If the hard drive has never been connected to a receiver before, the receiver will ask you to format it. Select Yes. Once the drive is formatted, the receiver will restart.
2.3. You can now use your receiver as a HD PVR!
3.Record your favourite shows and enjoy them when you want!

Step 1 done.
Step 2.1 done.
Step 2.2 .... Big nothing!

Any help is more than appreciated.

I just attached a Western Digital passport drive to my 6131 and it was exactly that easy. Plugged it in, formatted, reboot and done. I would double check your connections, possibly try a different USB cable first. Then I would call Bell on the off chance they have to do something at their end. Otherwise you likely have either a defective drive or defective receiver.

Do a search on "comstar" and you will see that many people are reporting these drives do not work, or do not fully work, depending on the model.

Example:

It could still be a problem with your receiver, but the only way to know for sure is to use a fully support EHD.

I just exchanged the Comstar for a LaCie 1TB and I'm still experiencing the same "nothing".

I then had a chat session with Bell Tech using the Bell support page. The tech told me that so far everything was "normal", she had to proceed with an update first! However as the LaCie is a 1TB she can't be sure it would be working.

So far I still didn't see any message on the screen but the tech told me it could take up to two hours if it works.

I keep my fingers crossed as apparently some users were succesfull with LaCie 1TB hard drive.

After 3 hours the "signal" supposedly sent by the previous tech didn't do any change. I this time called support over the phone, the tech led me through a few troubleshoting steps. Then after refering to one of her colleagues told me that unfortunately according to the all story and the diagnostics we went through the problem is a defecteive receiver.

I should receive another one in the coming thre days and will have to send back the current one.

I will post the status upon reception of the replacement unit.

Gilles D . . . FYI this morning we installed a 1TB LaCie EHD on a friend's 6131 and it was just a Bell advertised . . . plug and play. Couldn't have been easier. Good luck with your new receiver.

We had the 6131 and TV on watching a regular channel and then powered up the LaCie. Then connected the two via the USB connection and were forwarded into the format screen. After selecting format there it was downloading program and channel guide info. Took about 10 minutes total for that to finish and, voila, PVR was activated.

Just got my 6131 two days ago. Attached a 120 GB Western Digital in an AirLink powered enclosure. 5400 RPM EHD works fine so far. PVR works 100%, both SD and HD. Activation of the EHD required some special action on Bell's part, which occured at the same time as the installation tech called to activate programming.

Happy camper so far!

I just added a Ultra Speed portable hard drive I picked up at Wal-mart (500 GB $68) and it works pefectly. Inside it has a Western Digital HD so all was good. When I try bringing it back to my computer so I can upload saved shows from there, computer doesn't recognize it. But when hooked back up to the 6131, it sees it again. Thoughts?

The recordings are encrypted. Also, it uses Linux software, not windows. There are programs available to get the programs off the hard drive and onto your computer, but I have never done this personally.

Can you give some extra info:

Does the receiver recognize the hard drive? Go to Menu and Multimedia to see if it sees the hard drive. Is your guide 2 days or 9 days? If it is 9, the receiver is seeing and using the hard drive.

Also, what are the specs on your hard drive? Type, speed, does it have an external power supply, size, etc.

The hard drive is 300 GB with its own external power supply.I put it together to use with my laptop. The receiver did recognize it and reformatted it.Also,my guide is 9 days

Did you try a hard reboot of the receiver (unplug for a couple of minutes)? If the guide is 9 days, the receiver is seeing the hard drive (the extended guide is stored on the hard drive).

Can you pause live TV?

I did just that when I phoned the tech line.I've tried pausing it...it doe not pause.Nothing happens when I press the record button, either.I have heard that some HD's are not compatible but I still find it hard to believe that since the receiver went through the motions when the HD was plugged in.
