FCC Cites Dell For Failure To Label TV Sets
(Broadcasting & Cable)
Dell.com has joined the list of online TV sales Web sites cited by the FCC for failure to label analog-only TV sets.
As of May 25, sets without digital tuners must be clearly marked, either on the set or in close proximity, with the warning that the set will not receive over-the-air broadcasts after February 2009 unless equipped with a converter box.
WUHF 31, Rochester's Fox channel is switching tomorrow night too.
Of the 15 OTA-based U.S. stations we get on cable up here, it is the only one making the switch then. The other 14 are in June. (if it isn't delayed again.)
Oh yeah, just to be clear the 15 stations are the Detroit "4" (NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS), Fox Rochester, the 5 Seattles, and 5 Superstations (KTLA, WGN, WPCH, WSBK, WPIX)
I'm curious to see it on cable, will the picture be squeezed into a 4:3 frame, or will the sides be cutoff. It may even look the exact same too. Who knows?
denben73: Ever see a "widescreen show" on a 4:3 TV? It's like the "old days". The top and bottom are black so it can squeeze in the widescreen picture. I bet you it will be like that. Thank goodness I have an hd antenna, I couldn't stand watching an HD feed, converted into SD with the black bars on the top and the bottom on an HDTV! LOL...it would be like watching a 12 inch TV!
The black bars on the top and bottom...I see that now on lots of channels and many programs. We have a 36" 4:3 TV. It shouldn't be too bad.
No widescreen HD TV for us yet. This one still works OK and no HD service on cable here yet......if ever.
This is probably stupid and not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I think that this the only thing that has not been ever mentioned about the switch. I know that we will still see those channels on cable or satellite but I don't think it was ever mentioned about how it would look.
Stations on cable/sat will probably look identical to how they handle HD content now - if they used to crop shows to fit 4:3, they'll probably continue that. If they used to letterbox, they'll probably continue that.
Say goodbye to Analog WUTV channel 29 that began operation on December 21, 1970.
I will sadly miss my old Analog friend that brought me Sci-Fi Theatre in the 70’s and Japanese cartoons like Prince Planet as a kid… !
For the past year, television stations, including WUTV Fox 29, have notified viewers of the February 17, 2009 analog shutoff date through on-air announcements, informational crawls, full-length programs, and their website. As a result, in order to avoid additional confusion due to the date change and as permitted by the recently enacted legislation, this station has notified the FCC that we would like to cease analog operations on February 17, 2009, as originally planned, and the FCC has consented to this station's plans for early termination. As required by the FCC, we are currently airing announcements throughout the day to inform our viewers that we will terminate analog broadcasting on effective at 11:59PM on February 17.
We need to record at 11:50PM ish on wards, this is history in the making and post the videos on youtube! I wonder how each station will shutdown!?
This is your final warning, we are shutting down analog transmissions, please visit "website" or call "xxx-xxx-xxxx" or visit our drop in center located at xxx xxxx to get your tv working again. BZZZZ STATIC.
That is what I figured. The analog shutdown is an engineering operation and will not likely be communicated to those in the studio. Someone will just cut the wire and that is that.
Man that would be boring to watch that, it would be like watching a "help channel" to setup your digital cable or sat. dish This is how you use your remote, it will be like Family Guy torture (Inside joke for you Family Guy fans).
For anyone that is interested, the FCC has published the final list of stations, showing those that will be converting on Feb. 17. It shows the night-light status including WUTV and WUHF. The 10 stations that had requested hardship waivers have been granted them so they will convert. Of interest to Winnipeg customers of Shaw and MTS TV - WDAZ (ABC) will be converting as planned. No more annoying crawls.
I'm just guessing but I think "nite lite plus" refers to the following:
Under “enhanced analog nightlight,” the top-four affiliates must keep at least one analog signal on the air to provide programming that includes, at a minimum, local news and emergency information.
Thanks for the list Dr. Dave, I've been looking for that.
I get the feeling that there will be problems here in Canada. I can't see all the providers being ready right away to switch over to the digital feed of each channel.
The only channel I get that is switching is Fox Rochester, so I'll be watching that. Most of the Spokane channels are switching too.
Looks like all US feeds that come from Shaw Broadcast Services (Cancom) have been switched over to the DT feeds for a while. I've noticed cropping of a few graphics on NBC and CBS Boston (and no annoying crawls) for a couple of weeks.
Does anyone in London know if WICU and WJET will remain on Rogers Cable. I believe WJET is going off-air tonight BUT WICU will remain available until June 12 2009.
They're only taking their old analog 'Over the Air' (OTA) transmitter off the air in place of their new Digital transmitter. Rogers will be receiving them using the Digital transmitter or by Fiber-optic cable... so no need to worry you won't miss Judge Judy tomorrow.
Did anyone watch WUTV turn off their Analog TX tonight? What a disaster that was!
The bitrate of the Fox-HD feed on local stations is controlled remotely by the Fox Network with their proprietary splicing device. Subchannels therefore make no difference to the network feed (only the subchannels will look like crap).
One station (WCAX / CBS) went to higher channel and how it's coming in AMAZING NOW. Very interesting how changing the channel number/frequency makes such a HUGE difference, I mean not even a little!
As planned and announced over the air, KVOS and KBCB cut over last night. Their former analogue channels (12 and 24, respectively) are dead air this morning. They are loud and clear this morning on their digital channels 35 and 19.
Does anyone record the signal of WUTV, WUHF or KVOS cutting off their analog signal. I miss that yesterday because i don't live in nanaimo or ladysmith bc anymore. it is going to be on youtube.
