iPad Battery Discussions

I have an iPad Air (model A1474) that I purchased 3 years ago. Originally the battery typically lasted about 8 hours and took 4 hours to charge. I typically charged it every 2-3 days.

Lately the battery only lasts about 2 hours and takes about 2 hours to charge and I need to charge it daily. Otherwise the iPad meets my needs, but I prefer not to have to plug it in twice a day, which is now required occasionally. I have implemented all the suggested battery saving recommendations, but they don't help much.

https://www.apple.com/ca/batteries/m...g-performance/

I understand that you can take the iPad to Apple and they'll replace the battery (or iPad itself) for C$139. Has anyone done that and are you happy? I understand that you should backup before doing that.

I've also looked into non-Apple places like https://irepair.ca/ who will do it for $90. Has anyone done that and are you happy?

The other thing I've noticed is that the battery indicator is a bit erratic. I'll use the iPad for an hour and it'll indicate 50% left when I turn it off. When I use it in the next session, it'll stay at 50% for say half an hour, and then it'll start going down a percent per minute or so...

I have not updated to iOS 11 yet because I've heard there can be issues with Rogers Anyplace app and I want to keep it working since Anyplace Web doesn't have Manage PVR functionality at this time.

Comments, suggestions welcome.

There is an excellent free app called Battery Life that will tell you all the information about your battery. Apparently batteries can be charged about 300 times during their life. This app will tell you your battery wear life. A 100% battery life on my iPad mini 2 is really on 93% which is a low battery wear level of 7%.

My iPhone 4S has a battery wear life of 12% which is average. My iPhone is almost 6 years old. To have a battery replaced where I live costs $40.00 for an iPhone 4S and $100.00 for an iPad mini. I haven't had any experience with having to have a battery replaced yet.

There are several apps called "Battery Life", but I downloaded the one with 5 stars (RBT 2.1.6). The "wear level" shows as 56% - very high - says I should replace battery soon. It shows only 3900 out of 8820 mAh.

I'll keep monitoring the situation. Thanks.

I had updated to iOS 11 and indeed I cannot watch tv from my HomeEdition. I found out in the last few days that there is a new app called Rogers Any Place TV. I installed it from App Store, and I can watch tv form my iPad. However, this app cannot do pvr recording at the moment. So, I am keeping both apps for now. What I am trying to say is that you can now safely update to iOS 11, but keeping 2 apps.

@e268 . Thank you. I don't stream, so as long as I can still use the guide and Manage PVR, I'm happy.

Yes, just tried it with HomeEdition. It can manage pvr and guide, but cannot stream.

Today my iPad went to black screen at about 20% battery power showing, after less than two hours on. I guess I'll get a new battery. I'm a bit surprised at how quickly this became an issue. A few months ago I had 4 hours runtime easy.

Thanks to @e268 regarding Home Edition/Anyplace. I now have both and upgraded to iOS11.

I'd definitely do the official Apple battery swap. The cheaper options sometimes come with much worse batteries which wear out faster, and will just frustrate you again.

I was thinking the same, but I had a shop very nearby and since the cost is almost half, I went with it. I also asked about the battery used and they stated that the battery "is the same" as the one used by Apple. Apparently it has to be "identical", otherwise the iPad (or any Apple product) will not work. We'll see.

I was also aware of the fact that Apple sometimes provides a refurbished similar iPad instead of replacing the battery. I didn't really want that, as my iPad is in good shape. I did do a backup to my computer before handing it in. I'll advise when I get it back shortly.

At $139, the price Apple charges is grossly inflated. The battery itself is worth about $10-20. $70 for replacement sounds about right. (I know someone who recently had the screen and battery replaced in their LG phone for $100.) The main issues with batteries is with suppliers who sell poor quality knock-offs, or seconds or old stock that were meant to be discarded. They sometimes crop up on places like eBay. A reputable local dealer is unlikely to be selling those.

Who are the "reputable local dealers"? Are there any businesses/chains that use high quality (new) batteries, and stay away from the knockoffs one finds on eBay?

Thunder Bay has at least 2. I am sure Toronto has a few.

I purchased a spare battery for an LG G4 on Amazon that was better than the original. I've also purchased several UPS batteries from UPS Battery Center that are very good as well as Harmony remote and camera batteries on eBay. Can't say I've ever had a real dud but a couple of the camera batteries from a few years ago didn't seem to hold a charge as long as they should. But then they cost $10 and the local stores wanted $60 for the OEM version. The $60 batteries failed quite fast which is why I tried eBay.

I've had my iPad back for a few days now. The replacement battery from iRepair seems to make my iPad work "like new". I can go 2-3 days between charges and not worry about limiting my use of the device. This morning we had used the iPad for an hour and still had 90% left. The old battery would have been 50% or less. I'll report back if I notice any deterioration in performance, but for the time being, I'm happy.

I have two iPads, an iPad Air which I purchased 3-4 years ago, and a fairly new iPad Pro, a couple of months old. I keep the older iPad Air for apps which don't run under iOS 11. The Pro has the latest iOS version.

The old Air gave a wear reading of 14%, not too bad for a device that old.

The new iPad Pro gave a wear level of 0%, perfect.

I also checked my 3 year old iPhone 6 Plus. The wear level was only 1%. I've always had excellent battery life on this device.
