I want to upgrade my current tablet. I have a 5-6 yr old Note 10.1 that I can't update the OS on. I have a couple apps that work on my phone (S7) that won't work on my tablet. I'd like to get a tablet they work on.
I'm not sure if it is an issue with the Android version, the tablet or if the apps are just for phone use and don't want to bother with the upgrade if the apps won't work. It all exercise related and I'd like to have my tablet on the treadmill instead of my phone.
The apps are:
C25K by Zenn labs
RockMyRun
Polar Flow
Is there a way to tell if these are supported on a newer tablet? Thinking a Tab E
It's likely Android version related. The Note 10.1 appears to be stuck at Android 4.1. C25K requires 4.4. Polar Flow requires 4.3. These apps appear to be compatible with later tablets with higher Android versions. (They are compatible with my S2.) RockMyRun should be compatible with Android 4.1.
I'll go out on a limb and say that almost any app that works on an S7 will also work on a Samsung 5.x or 6.x tablet. The exception will be apps that require a cellular network, such as many phone apps. Not sure if the Tab E is the best option since it appears to run Android 5.1.1. Something that runs Android 6.01 would be a better hedge against obsolescence.
Thanks for the reply. I cheated and found 1 I could try at Staples and it looks like I can run all three apps on the Tab E.
Of course, now I'm wondering if I should get it, a Tab A 10.1 or a Tab S2. Each of which is more money than the last.
So, $250 for the Tab E
$400 for the Tab A
$550 for the Tab S2.
Leaning towards the Tab A as the middle ground, the newest of the 3 and won't break the bank. But not sure if the S2 is that much better. At least the A and S2 are 6.01.
My current tablet is on 4.1.2 and none of the apps will install on it.
The Tab S2 was a little more than I wanted but it is a very nice tablet. I needed a large, bright screen and there weren't many tablets at the time that did that well. The deciding factor was it being on sale for $450. I wouldn't have paid $550 for it. I really wanted a Google Nexus 10 but they were around $650 then. They're about $500 now. The Tab A looks like a pretty good deal at $289. I'd still have to take a close look at the specs though.
Was wondering where you saw the Tab A for $289 when I finally saw the smaller Tab A for ~$160 at Staples right now. I'm thinking I will go that route for the treadmill and wait until the next version of the S series is out (which should be this year) and get one then. Should solve my treadmill issue for not a lot of $ and means I can leave it there all the time.
I feel really strange when I can't find the What'sapp app for an iPad. That think really put me into thinking. And after that, this idea finally got into my head that, if an app is available for mobile device that doesn't mean it will also gonna be available for a Tab.
I must have been on the US Amazon site by mistake. Prices for The Tab A and S2 on Amazon.ca are much higher. I see the Tab A on sale at NCIX for $349 tagged "Special price ends soon." DirectCanada has it for $358. The S2 is $550 and $532. NCIX is where I got the S2 on sale.

I see Staples has it for $349 now as well. Glad I didn't buy it yesterday. Still going to wait now that I have my old one mostly working. Either see when the S2 is on sale or see if they come out with an S3. Looks like the screen is different enough to warrant it, especially as I end up using it on holidays a fair bit outside.
Hah. Looks like I found a cheaper option. Managed to get Kit Kat (4.4.2) on my tablet and C25K and Polar flow are installing. Rock My Run won't, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
What kind of tab we are talking about here? I guess iOS tab are out of the question here. App store got different apps for iPhone and iPad. But as far as I know, Android don't have that kind of problems. They are easy on tabs and mobiles.
even if you can get an app designed for a phone only onto a tablet, you may still run into issues, take Whatssup for example, its only made available for phones but if u get it working on your tablet it may not work because its designed to send/receive sms to authenticate itself, but how many tablets do I know who can send/receive sms, not many
