Half a million Android Devices activated each day

Over half a million Android devices are being activated every day according to a recent tweet by Google Senior VP Andy Rubin.

That number is up from 300,000 per day last December and 200,000 a day in August 2010. Rubin says the number of activations is still growing by over 4% every week.

A recent report from IDC predicted that about 180 of the 472 million smartphones expected to be sold in 2011 will be powered by Android.

Crazy amount of devices and growth, that is 347 devices a minute or 6 per second. Comparatively, Apple is at 366,000 devices per day (Phones, iPads and iPods).

I think we are seeing a major shift in usage, similar to past upheavals in the computing industry. People will be using small wireless devices based on a portable OS, instead of PCs, for working, communicating, playing and information gathering. Goodbye Windows, hello Android.

Didn't everyone hear that Windows Phone will be the dominant OS in a couple of years?

An analyst said so, so it must be true.

More seriously, that a whole lotta phones.

Android rocks!

That probably explains why I have such a hard time logging in to HTCSense. They even sent me an email after I complained about it and that's what they had mentioned. They said there system couldn't handle the extra amount of new subscribers to the system. They apologized and said they were working on it.

A friend of mine has been waiting for a couple of weeks to receive her new Android HTC phone.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

It's the reason I went Android (from years of BB). I think it's the future of mobile computing, so I want to get on board sooner than later.

Wow - in the Google Q2 earnings call today, Larry Page said it is now 550,000 Android activations per day. Amazing growth for this platform.

That's about right. If 180 million are sold in 2011 as predicted then that's about half a million a day. Since they were selling less than half a million a day for almost half a year then they will have to exceed that in the second half.

I think the analysts have also underestimated the market share of Android and iOS and overestimated WP7 and BB share.

Would this be for just phones or anything Android driven?

That is quite a number. If they update their software like I read in reviews, Android will be a contender to go after, that's for sure.

Report: Android closing in on 50% of Global Smartphone market share...

http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/s...are/2011-08-02

Android is growing in leaps and bounds in the Smartphone market. That daily rate quoted in earlier posts is absolutely crazy. Wow.

How long until it takes over the tablet market too?

IMHO Android won't turn the tide into the tablet market until Amazon comes around with their 2 new tablets this Fall/Winter.
