Unauthorized Apple iPhone App Stores popping up

Apple Inc. faces a growing threat to its iPhone business, as renegade stores spring up online to sell unauthorized software for the device.

The developer behind some popular iPhone software on Friday plans to open a service called Cydia Store that could potentially sell hundreds of iPhone applications that are not available through Apple's official store. Users must download special software that alters their iPhones before they can run these programs.

I jail-broke my iPod Touch 2G a few weeks ago and have been using Cydia to download things that aren't available in the App Store.

My main reason for jailbreaking was to install custom themes and have more control over system settings that Apple locks down. I like using SBSettings as a quick way to toggle things like WiFi, auto-lock and SSH access off and on.

I would buy the first paid Cydia app but the developer notes that there are compatibility problems with it and Intelliscreen (which I also obtained from Cydia, but paid $10 to register).

If there's an official App that interests me I have no problem paying for it so I'll continue to use the official App Store along with the Cydia store.

I've had my iPod jailbroken for about a month now, and I think Cydia is a great resource for apps and themes. I love the fact that I can have my weather on my lockscreen. Whether or not I buy the for-cost apps on it remains to be seen just due to the compatibility factors previously mentioned.

It's quite a timely move by Cydia as well as there was a bit of a stink regarding the Apple App Store taking forever approving the Starplayr app for satellite radio. So long in fact, that the company that made it packed it in and called it a day. Quite a shame since I was looking forward to it. But I guess there's always room for another fart app.

Now, with the jailbroken app stores, those applications may get a second chance at life.

PDAnet - the main reason (in addition to customizing with themes) that I jailbreaked my iPhone. Bought it before Cydia Store.
